Giantbomb's Endurance Run: The Third: Chrono Trigger

Haha, this has been a lot of fun to watch, despite being somewhat frustrating sometimes.

I will say that they make a pretty good argument as to why games do so much hand holding these days.

I have to admit, I laughed at their obsessing over the 'tent' in the middle ages, and then when they flew over it in the present I was hoping they'd go in, 'oh that thing no we've seen that' and they just continue flying lol. How he can remember that they went into that location probably 20 episodes ago for 2 seconds given their track record...is beyond me lol.

God that tent thing drove me nuts. They wasted so much time in the previous video speculating on it then when they finally get the answer they just write it off as unimportant.

The only thing that aggravates me is that often they don't queue up attacks. You'll notice that there is a pause before the next time he completes an action while another character performs their action.

Yeah this cost them quite a bit in today's ep. Ryan casts haste and then wastes time dicking around in menus and not taking advantage of it. It's kind of ridiculous when they're fighting a boss that doesn't attack as it counts down from 5 and they don't even make Bobo attack because they think they need him to heal even if they're full on hp.

I think it makes a better argument for how detrimental hand holding can be on the game playing mind.

Chrono Trigger has aged INCREDIBLY well. I've never heard of people getting lost and not knowing what to do in Chrono Trigger. These guys just play too many modern games that tell you exactly what to do, and it's making their ability to play Chrono Trigger significantly worse.

Also, at what point are they going to realize that they're way too low level to do most of the stuff they're trying to do.

Modern SE sequel: Chrono Trigger 2, linear paths, no world map, tutorials, and narrative literature.

*shudders*

If Patrick hadn't talked Ryan into choosing active instead of wait, no one would be talking about this. Ryan takes forever and a day to choose anything.

I fucking fist-pumped when they got killed. Again. There's no point in using Haste if you waste time not doing anything.

EDIT: And again, you are using Brono for all the heavy MP nuking. Put the fucking Gold Stud on him.

NOW THIS IS WHAT I CALL AN ENDURANCE RUN. The combo of the boss music and Ryan/Patrick trying to find a good strategy was fun to watch. \m/

Yes... YES. Feast on them Rust Tyranno! AVENGE THE REPTITES!

Selling all those fire absorb/ cut fire by half vests is really biting them in the ass now. Even if you aren't the Vinny "horde all items" type and like to keep a tidy inventory, you NEVER sell items that have special status effects.

I wonder if they will ever discover Son of Sun, and if they do, they just run the F away.

Last episode was good.

I enjoyed watching them start to understand some of the game's basic mechanics 18+ hours into the run. Advanced techniques like giving the MP-saving accessory to the guy using MP the most (Brono) and getting Ryan to select attacks faster are the next steps.

edit: that did come out snarkier than I wanted to. Call it lowered expectations or whatever, but I thought that episode was ok. Not cringeworthy to watch. Patrick clearly read up on the game (with his insistence on trying Haste without having any indication from within the game that it's good) and I can appreciate that bit of effort.

Patrick: Use an elixir on Bobo and get some HP back

while bobo had full HP.

I wonder how many of these sidequests they will end up doing. And yeah, Patrick shouldn't have suggested Ryan use the active system. Ryan would be having a much easier time if he didn't feel so rushed.

A fine example of why this thread is miserable.

Ugh, that is the last thing I would want out of this Quick Look. At least this way it makes it more tense.

Heh, that was cringe worthy (in an entertaining way) to watch today. I've always seen that boss as a joke. Just unload on him and he'd be dead before the second countdown finishes. But Ryan is so slow on the controls and makes odd decisions.

Yeah, any number of configurations would've been fine, to be honest. Just not Ryan + active system.

I think I need to go to the GB forums after this and ask for a video of Ryan playing a game well, to wash the taste of Chrono Trigger failure away.

Y'know I was thinking of this same general idea yesterday.
It feels like every member of the GB team has a type of video game they are really into / good at. Knowing that helps forgive their relatively unskilled play at other types of games. it. Jeff is good with arcade action games: blitz for example. Brad is your PC guy, starcraft 2 be his game. Vinny, I think of as an western rpg kinda guy. Patrick I'm not so sure about, but he's new.

What kind of game is Ryan good at? He's a great personality, great podcast host, but what kind of games does he excel at?

He picks up review duties on virtually every third person action game that isn't a shooter: Assassin's Creed Revelations, Spider-Man Edge of Time, X-Men Destiny, Alice Madness Returns and Epic Mickey most recently. He played pretty competently when they forced him to play Dark Souls too.

He's also the dick kicking master of the world.

Oh sweet jebus, they finally used Haste. I wonder if they'll keep Marle now.

Does Ryan still do things like have Crono and Frog ready to attack, have Crono attack then wait on Frog's dual tech menu and wait until Crono can attack again? I bailed out early but that annoyed way more than it should.

This stem's from this week's Bombcast thread, but could you imagine a Demon's/Dark Souls endurance run with these guys? One rule. Vinny is not allowed to play, only comment.

Just started watching this.

Jesus christ how long can you spend at the Millennial Fair? I played CT for the first time four or so years ago and I was through that in like five minutes.

This is one of the more unfounded criticisms I have read. I stayed a modern game length of time at the fair when I first played CT as a kid.

I spent a fair amount of time there because I wanted to do all the things in the spooky tent place.

You can spend at least a solid hour in there exploring and doing minigames for silver tabs. I have no clue what you're talking about.

Their battle with the boss on Friday was difficult for them because they were staying on the defensive. They had the right idea using Crono, Frog, and Robo, since then they could use Cure Wave and do a full HP heal on the party. It's a combination of Ryan being slow on deciding what to select during character turns and not devastating the boss with offensive dual techs while it was counting down to the fire attack. Luckily, they managed to beat it by equipping the Red Vest on Robo and just having him use Uzi Punch while the boss was healing him with its fire attacks. Using their strategies, there was no way they would've been able to keep Crono and Frog alive for long. Congrats to them beating the boss.

I just saw EP 35, and even with all the frustration that comes watching these guys play, it is still very entertaining and plus they actually beat Tyrano so it's all good.

Btw do you guys know if there is anyway to watch that live episode?, also have they (Ryan nad Patrick) spoke or gave any opinions on the game? I would like to hear what they think about it.

The live episode was put on the website as a normal episode later on the same day so if you've watched all the episodes up to 35 you've seen it at some point.

I don't think Ryan really said anything about the game outside of the ER but Patrick is talking a lot about it on his Formspring. He's basically saying that they are having a ton of fun and don't care for the comments and complaints. They are playing it the way they want and having fun doing it (and personnaly, I think that this is all that really count).

You can check the formspring if you want more details: http://www.formspring.me/patrickklepek
