Giantbomb's Endurance Run: The Third: Chrono Trigger

This thread is internet nerd rage at its worst. Some of us actually enjoy the GB personalities and how they play through games while commentating. As a result of commentating they often screw up while playing, this adds to the charm, yes sometimes they can be stupid to the point of annoyance but NO ONE IS FORCING YOU TO WATCH. If you want to see a perfect story run go somewhere else. The ER is special because one person has not played the game, and is experiencing it for the first time. This is part of the feature's allure and probably why they don't just call it a let's play.

I love how everyone begged for an ER only to make sure we never get another. It's just a video series of two dudes playing a SNES game, keep things in perspective. I for one am a few episodes behind so I haven't witnessed the end of the world as so many of you in this thread have heralded but I have a feeling I will be fine with how they play. If it annoys me too much I will simply stop watching. End of story. There are plenty of other videogame videos and videogames out there to occupy more than enough of your time, heck there's even plenty of other GB videos that you could spend your time watching.

This ER rage is out of hand. I'm sure this has been said countless times in this thread, but I would rather people hear it again then post some nerd-rage-gasm about how CT is their childhood and GB is somehow ruining said childhood.

Are you lumping every criticism or discussion of battle mechanics into an "omfg angry nerds want a perfect run" thing? You can't blame people for pointing out big blunders like them forgetting they have a flying time machine that they spent all that time getting. Since you are talking about this thread here: there really hasn't been any "srs business nerd raging" aside from that one stupid rape comment by one poster. Let's not turn one or two posters into a whole thread. The bitching about any criticism made about the ER are almost as annoying as any supposed internet raging.

I've been enjoying watching this Endurance Run from the very beginning so far. Ryan and Patrick have a good chemistry together and sometimes make me laugh. Having said that, it's not a bad thing to criticize the choices they've made in the game and the strategies they're using. It's constructive criticism. I hope they do more Endurance Runs in the future with other older or newer Japanese RPGs.

You asked if he was lumping every criticism in the same pile, but then proceeded as if his answer was "duhhh uh-huh. All criticism is bad, right?"

Yes, that's it. We're bitching about the bitching because comments like "hahaha, oh man, they forgot about their time ship! Too funny" are totally the same as "I wish they just stopped this ER entirely" and "I hate this ER, they should get Vinny and Jeff to do one instead" and "how can they be this stupid!? These guys shouldn't even be allowed to review games!" and "They are insulting my childhood."

Yep. It's all the same, and we don't see the difference.

indeed, there are some assholes who raged but the majority have been pretty good at pointing out mistakes or alt strategies for the boss fights. they might be frustrated but they weren't raging.

Good episode, I hope they don't give up on the sidequests. They're pretty close to beating that skeleton boss. They kill the core quick which is what must be done, then they just have to keep alternating between Brog's water tech, Robo's heals and Chrono's physical attack (use Confuse!!!).

If they would experiment using more single, dual, and triple techs, then they'd have an easier time on the boss they were defeated by twice today. Crono recently learned Luminaire, Uzi Punch does a heck of a lot of damage, and there are other techs they can use at their disposal. The fact that they were solely relying on Spincut wasn't wise. And as others have mentioned, they haven't used Cure Wave once yet. It's pretty frustrating. Cure Beam isn't going to cut it for this boss. Well, they could get by, but they're stretching it really thin now.

Honestly, what they should be doing is putting one of the gold earrings on Crono, and abusing Luminaire.

Patrick made the mistake of telling Ryan in a far earlier episode that confuse rarely works on bosses. Ryan is never going to bother.

Why are you here exactly? What do you get out of "correcting" people in this thread? What purpose does it all serve?

Point of any content is to generate discussions. Whether it'd be good or bad. I don't know why people insist on dictating what kind of comments can be made. Seriously, it's not as if the GB staff actually care about what others think of the way they play, they rarely interact with the community for ER, since most of the videos are posted after the fact anyway! If they never do another ER, it won't be because of the traffic they generate, it's how time consuming it is.

Episode proved that they just don't have a grasp on how to effectively manage the battle system.

I did not mean to lump criticisms into that pile; I admittedly posted before getting to the last couple pages because the entitlement everyone was exhibiting seemed so unfounded. I don't have a problem with the critiquing or even making fun of their playstyles. I also haven't gotten to the flying bit myself to be able to accurately talk about it in the slightest. The bottom line is that they didn't have to do another ER ever, and it seems like the nerd-rage that has resulted has made sure we will never get another. I was wrong to equate the couple of posters to the thread as a whole, they just really seemed to dominate the thread and were bringing it down a rabbit-hole.

I actually thought that providing a link of an alternate romance (or whatever it is, once again, haven't quite gotten to this myself) was a beautiful way of providing people with alternatives to their playthrough.

I think the fact that this is Ryan's first time playing through the game has been forgotten too easily. Yes he missed dialogue, and it made the playthrough longer, but he is playing a game for the first time while commentating on the game while playing. It doesn't help to have Patrick (who has played the game before) feeding him wrong information half the time. I would've thought GB would get the benefit of the doubt, as they are one of the few sites that appear to be generally very well liked on this board.

I am just pointing it out because he said "this thread is internet rage at its worst". Really? Have you seen how many posts have been like "damn look at all this nerd rage up in here" and the like? Because there's been a lot of other posters that seem to be lumping criticism together and telling the criticizers to stop ruining the thread. A lot of posts about that, rather than actual "raging".

I'm pretty sure people can still like the ER and make complaints about certain things.

There is a difference between discussion and the flame-bait that seems to be fueling the thread. This is just one of those instances that makes me embarrassed to call myself a gamer. There is a line between discussion and just plain ignorance.

Boring and not as effective as you think. Now Dark Matter...*giggles*

*shrug* I did it for grinding, and it worked quite nicely.

I don't see how Luminaire is any more boring than any other attack in the game.

I understand how it make look like everybody is down on them, but really. They are pretty awful at the game sometimes. lol.

I have a feeling the GAF thread has been pretty tame compared to other places on the internet.

To comment on the actual ER:

I think they should swap Barle in on boss battles for healing since that's what they end up doing most of the time with Bobo... but it's a No Girls Allowed club. :(

They did much better this time, but it's extremely frustrating that they have such a powerful dual tech that HEALS ALL that they just refuse to use in that last fight. It was exactly what they needed to take him down, but they refuse to use it. Hopefully they'll fix that in the next run. Other than that, though, they paid much closer attention to the clues that the game was giving them, which made for a much less frustrating run.

Why can we not be down on them? No one seems to care when we shit on movies, television shows and sports games. Human beings create those things too (and put a hell of a lot more work into it than Ryan and Patrick put into the ER). Why are the Giant Bomb guys exempt from harsh criticism when the sole purpose of this video series is to deliver entertainment?

ESPECIALLY when Giant Bomb has proven that they can put out content far better than this. The content that Vinny and Jeff put out is stellar. Hell, the AC-10 Warthog Quick Look involves Drew shitting it up in a cockpit for 20 min before the wing catches on fire, and it ends up being absolutely brilliant.

No other place has accused them of raping Chrono Trigger so GAF is the worst as far as crapping on the ER.

This whole "one guy's actions reflects on the rest of GAF" shit needs to stop. The guy was a nut bar. We're not him. Let's move on.

I agree, did we ever figure out if they were still recording the ER or if they finished the recordings and are simply spacing out the videos? I remember them making reference to halloween and xmas from the past but there hasn't been any events in a while for them to comment on. I'm surprised the battery bug never seemed to rear its ugly head again. (*knocks on wood*)

That's a good question. I have no idea if they 're doing them in real time now.

Though, I do have to say, they might have to do some episodes of pure grinding.

They talked about it being the new year in last weeks episodes.

I must have missed this, pretty sure I made it through all of last week's. They must be approaching the end fairly soon though right? It seemed like they were at least a month ahead when they started (judging by them mentioning things they couldn't talk about on the bombcast), there's no telling how far in advance they are any more though.

They did #28 live, it's possible they went ahead and did 29-30-etc after that and didn't stream it though.

"Hit Enemy w/Confuse 4 Times"

Yeah, the only reason I learned what it did was because I felt like trying it on a wimpy enemy.

SPOILER: The first video I could find of the attack was at the final boss of the Black Omen, so if you don't want to see that, don't watch this.

Confuse has to be the worst name/worst description of an RPG skill outside of Final Fantasy Tactics.

In the DS version it was renamed "Frenzy"

Yeah I don't blame them at all if they never use confuse.
In almost every RPG status effects never work on bosses and the name and description for that move makes it sound like just a status move.

Honestly, I just dislike hearing uninformed comments like "we have the most dual techs on this team". The reason why the others have not learned their's is because you've only used the same 3 characters! It's not as if they had more by design, it's by player's choice. Makes me cringe when they make false statements like that.

It's not a false statement. They have more techs with that team. Whether or not that's a result of them having leveled that team more is irrelevant, its still their strongest combination of characters at this moment.

Anything is boring if you spam it constantly.

This ER is sexist.

Help me out please, this quick look has reminded me how good Chrono Trigger's music is. I'd like to buy it, but there are multiple versions. Is there a definitive Chrono Trigger soundtrack that I should look for?

Just get original or the piano versions. Best imo

Actually, the DS soundtrack is the definitive version, imo. It has all the dynamics stuff done right, and it includes the extra omake themes that were added to the PSX version of the soundtrack and the sound test menu. The second best bet is the SNES version of the soundtrack where some of the tracks have more KHz and drums, and in some cases sound heavier than the lighter/softer DS counterparts.

Avoid the PSX version of the soundtrack. It's essentially a soundtrack selection with an inferior version of Undersea Palace that lacks dynamics and reverb (I am using this as one example, since it's the one that stuck out to me the most when I played the PSX version and bought that version's soundtrack for the cutscene stuff), and it only adds the music for the cutscenes. It isn't worth the money and you're not getting all the tracks anyway (plus lower quality in some of the tracks).

Go with piano arrangements, OC ReMixes, the Jazz album (The Brink of Time) and Chrono Symphonic as well.

...Get Chrono Cross's album while you're at it...

Question for the CT experts - Are the characters leveled up enough to beat that side quest? Patrick mentioned he thinks they need to grind up.

Would they be able to beat Lavos right now?

Kill the core quickly? I think I remember that the easiest way to defeat him is to do the opposite and keep the core alive as long as possible. Once the core is dead the boss goes haywire and starts dealing a lot more damage. Of course, due to the horrible SNES translation this isn't at all obvious from the hint text so there's no way they will realize this.

Ah, I haven't watched to the end of the video (waiting for class to start, so...), but going by their current levels and especially judging their skill and how fast Ryan selects commands, I'd say...

...not yet... They'll die at Lavos's second form. Level 45 is sufficient for them, I think. If they need a safety cushion, I'd go for level 47-48. It's just because they don't select things quickly enough, they rely too much on Spincut rather than Confuse, Robo's lack of speed and lack of magic power is showing in his ability to heal, and they don't have Luminaire yet (I don't think). Once they get the powered-up Masamune for Frog, things might be fine for him.

I'm a tad surprised they're not going to use Magus. Given their usual tactics in battle, Magus is perfect for their needs.

Edit: Oh, they're fighting Retinite from the sounds of what people are saying in the thread.

Use Ice 2/Water 2 to hit all body parts and weaken his defense. It's unfortunate that they're not using Ayla since her Triple Kick would do lots of damage to it at this point. Same goes for Crono's Confuse. Anyway, physical attack that thing, preferably with Crono's Confuse and Robo's Uzzi Punch. Have the water user in the party keep using Water2/Ice2 at all times to make sure Retinite's defense doesn't rise much. I usually try to take out the bottom because that one's amazingly annoying. After that, things are generally peachy-keen.

If you keep the Core alive the whole time, then Retinite's defense won't be raised when you attack it. Use a spell that will heal the core (like Lightning, Fire) occasionally to win the battle faster. It'll run away when it's alone. Thus, do not destroy the core first!

Jazz album (The Brink of Time)
Forgot about that one. I almost want to flood the thread with OCR picks. ;)

[Magus/Cr] [Luminaire/DM] [gold/silver stud] spams could probably do sub 40 lvl Lavos. I just don't know what level Magus would be if you grinded him immediately to get enough TP and I'd have to contemplate equipment. It would have to be a special run to farm TP on low exp. You can spread around a workman's wallet if you have to.

But that thing is a damn purse.

I might have to start watching again. It sounds like they have reached the point at which I picked-up the game again last year.
