Giantbomb's Endurance Run: The Third: Chrono Trigger

Not watched all the ER (at 17 mins or so now) but wouldn't they need Barle to get into the castle? Just a guess as I've not played the game but she is the princess that lives there right? It makes sense to go there with her in the party because she can be all 'shut up guards!' right?

EDIT: Oh wow, I was right. lol. Took them a while to try that. I thought that would be the first thing they'd try this episode.

I don't think Ryan really said anything about the game outside of the ER but Patrick is talking a lot about it on his Formspring. He's basically saying that they are having a ton of fun and don't care for the comments and complaints. They are playing it the way they want and having fun doing it (and personnaly, I think that this is all that really count).

One hour ER today! Awesome!

It's going to be interesting to see which side quest they tackle next tomorrow.

Patrick: "A romantic side plot. Barle wants to fuck the robot."

Haha. I lost it there.
 
The weird thing with this endurance run is that I find Ryan and Patrick really entertaining but actually watching the game to be boring. I'd like to say it's because it's an RPG but Persona 4 was fun to watch due to the fusing. Still, turning out to be a pretty cool endurance run.

Oh cool, the Rainbow Shell quest is one of my favourites (it's just because I love the Ocean Palace theme so much... aaaand you get some cool gear for doing it).

I was entertained today, even with some of the blundering. I like talking to the NPCs too much in this game.

I think they renamed the snakes named Dumb and Dumber from the SNES version to "Slither" and "Squirm" in the DS version. Based on this, I'm kind of glad they kept Ozzie, Flea and Slash in both versions instead of Vinegar, Mayonnaise, and Soy Sauce... despite that being closer to the DBZ naming convention (which is what I felt they were going for in the original Japanese version).

...why do they keep pronouncing "Barle" wrong? マール (Maru). The equivalent would be バール (Baru) :/

Just about everyone I've known who has played the game pronounces it like they do, well Marley instead of Barley. I never understood that. Always pronounced it Marl. But then again there are names like Jesse.

"Barley" makes me think that she's a real Dragonball character in terms of names coming from food.

So... essentially you're still turning it into another syllable as well, but pronouncing it differently. Some people are saying [marli] (to be more precise: [mɑ˞li], where ɑ˞ = ar), while someone else said [marlʌ]. That's very interesting to me. The "e" at the end of "Marle" seems to throw people off, even if it was a cosmetic choice in terms of a name, I guess.

It's not worth trying to change what people are used to because of the localizations they grew up with. In the recent FF7 thread I got told off because I insisted the Aerith's correct name was just that, Aerith, which is exactly how it is spelt in the Japanese manual of the game as well as the Ultimania. Of course the Aeris squad came to give me a good whooping because if that's how it appeared in their game, that's what it is. Sure, I have no issues with localization, but there is an official name that the creators of the game gave a character. For example..Schala being Sara. =P

But for what it's worth, as a kid I too pronounced it Mar-lee. A time before the internet was mainstream or I lived in Japan.
 
Ehhhh, it's not a big deal to me anymore. Looking back on it, I'm quite sure the reason why I pronounced Marle the way I did was because I took French in elementary school, which tended to make the final 'e' in a word silent.

For the record, though, I always thought Schala--from an orthographical perspective--looked nicer. ^_^
 
They have a severe case of over-healing especially taking out two turns to do so. But I guess I can't fault new players that much for that. The Robot fits their very slow play-style though. Sort of two wrongs make it kinda right. Gold stud on Crono is also good for how they are playing though there are way better alternatives.

They couldn't save her. :( If I go through a play-through and can't save Lara, I'll rage quit!
 
I'm on the "Marl" train; always thought the 'e' was silent. "Mar-lee" does sounds nicer to the English speaking ear though, although if it was intended to be pronounced that way I don't know why they chose an 'e' instead of a 'y.'

You are correct. And when you visit her in the present she is healthy. It's a heartwarming moment, honestly.

I love the campfire scene so much.

I was disappointed that they didn't
save Lucca's mom. To this day, that stands as being an emotional scene. It was well done. It's too bad they didn't read through those sheets of paper more thoroughly.

Eh, the time limit is fairly unforgiving in that sequence and to make the mental connection that you actually have to press the corresponding buttons to spell instead of entering the password traditionally... not a biggie they didn't immediately get it right on their first try.

I agree. It's not entirely obvious to the player from the get-go. Let's hope they go back and try that again sometime later.
 
Rainbow shard goes in sun shine, yeah? Cuz if so, that's really funny the way in the beginning of today's episode they're talking about how there's more to be done with the rainbow shell, hmm what could it be, while at the same time text about the sun shrine is on screen.

No, you have to kill the Son of Sun and get the Moonstone. The Moonstone then goes into the shrine, etc., and eventually becomes the Sunstone.
 
Man, not saving LARA sure is a kick in the nuts. I was hoping they'd put 2 and 2 together since they read the password note. Now they can't have that heartwarming moment.

Oh well, I messed it up on my first try too, but I think that was because I didn't find the password note.

You go to the future, go to the sun palace, kill boss, get moonstone, put it the cave in the pre-historic era. The tricky part for them will be finding the guy that steals it. :lol

After making Lucca's weapon with the sunstone you can then go back to Melchior who will craft you the sword.
