Giantbomb's Endurance Run: The Third: Chrono Trigger

I remember there was one time I didn't save Lara on time because I was so panicked while playing the PSX version for some reason.

*reload*

It's such a kick in the pants when you don't save her. I'll watch the episode later, but d'awww... ;_;

I'm on the "Marl" train; always thought the 'e' was silent. "Mar-lee" does sounds nicer to the English speaking ear though, although if it was intended to be pronounced that way I don't know why they chose an 'e' instead of a 'y.'
A little bit of trivia: "Marle" is an actual word in both English and Old French (the Modern French equivalent is marne/marner). The 'e' spelling is a lesser-used version of the word "marl". The Old French origin is "marle" (which is pronounced the same way since the 'e' is silent).

However, in this case, it appears that the addition of the 'e' is cosmetic to make the word look more feminine. I imagine that Woolsey combined both Maru and Marudia (which he changed to "Nadia", thank God, because "Princess Marldia" sounds stupid) into one, switched the 'r' to an 'l', and tacked on the 'e' for feminization and cosmetic purposes.

As a non-native English speaker, that's my stance.
Yeah, I guess you could say this factors in too. The first dialect of English I learned certainly wasn't Canadian English, and then I learned French at age 5 or 6, so the endless code-switching I do in real life messes with my pronunciation a bit in several languages.

To be fair, my boyfriend likes to mess with me and point out the mistakes I make with standard English since the dialect of English I grew up with is a very non-standard version of English that I use at home with my parents.

It is so frustrating having them use Bobo all game and then not having him in the party for the desert quest. Another 15 mins of walking around doing nothing..didn't they realize with the rainbow shel/ghost quests that there are character specific quests.

Also I a few days ago I told myself once they got to Lara they will 100% not save her. Didn't let me down there.

Yeah, but they might've also assumed that Bobo's quest was a different one.
The future that's referenced

Oh man that ending.

I fucked up that Bucca scene too recently. But like a true man, I refused to reload my save.

I remember wandering around a lot not sure how to progress that quest the first time either. It's not entirely obvious that you need to use Bobo to trigger anything (Though in hindsight it makes sense of course, but if she said something like "Oh I wish I could live long enough" or something, not "I can do it now thanks!"). I think that's the most forgivable gaff of theirs so far. And \o/ hooray at gold stud on brono.

Also not surprised at the LARA thing. I haven't played in years but I remember it being irritating because of having to hit the button to close the dialogue first or something.

I actually got
LARA
on the first try but it had mad drama.
I didn't read the note beforehand and failed the password once. Then I went into panic mode and ran out the door looking for something (I remembered that you got tip offs in the future). I quickly read the note, ran back, and inputted it in the nick of time.
It was the most intense thing in CT I can think of. My young child brain was blown away.

I was disappointed that they didn't
save Lucca's mom. To this day, that stands as being an emotional scene. It was well done. It's too bad they didn't read through those sheets of paper more thoroughly.

They did read it, Ryan said he knew the password. He just messed up the input, probably because he didn't realize what the game expected of him. And we all know how he is under pressure. In his defense it's not clear at all unless you remember back to XABY, the game doesn't show you an input field or anything.

And yeah that scene is super dark. I honestly find it to be a legitimately scary moment to this day. It really establishes a sense of slowly building dread, and it's that much more powerful because your imagination fills in the dots from the SNES graphics.

I see. I couldn't remember all of the details after I watched today's ER, so I was assuming. Chrono Trigger Lucca spoiler
Yup, the haunting music while Lucca was walking around her house, and the frantic dialog of her mother telling her to shut the machine off was unsettling. And let's not forget that scream which followed, ending with Lucca laying her head on her bed while she was on her knees on the floor. Everything about that scenario was pieced together so memorably. Very good.

Looks like Patrick started to parse out the way chests work.

It's kinda funny that they easily figured out the importance of choice in the Magus dialogue, but when you add in the instant gratification of a chest, it's ignored. Oh Chrono Trigger, you so tricky.

I think they've already hit every single one of that kind of chest, so that knowledge won't be put to use.

Meh, doesn't bother me that much. I think I didn't realize what saying no did until like my 3rd playthrough. lol

Ryan should talk about more TV shows during wandering time, made the episode 100 times better.

Why they never use Luminaire? Why? Oh god why? You have an item that cuts MP usage and ULTIMATE DAMAGE in the description, why are you not using ultimate damage? /rage

Oh my god, they done it. They finally noticed it.

what does saying "no" do when trying to open those black chests?

If you go to the past and expose the chest to the pendant then say "no" you can then go into the future to open the chest and get an upgraded version of the item. Then you can go back to the past and take the item again.

lol wow. Don't blame them for not figuring that out but what a shame they didn't.

Blew my mind when there were two Bobos on the same overworld. Didn't Doc Brown say that would cause some kind of catastrophe?

Yeah, he says that.

And then Marty and Doc and Biff all run into themselves at various points in the movies anyway. Doc and Biff even talk to themselves.

Good ER yesterday. They're making progress on those side quests. And yeah, the How It's Made rant that Ryan was going on was pretty hysterical. He's so right about being able to burn through those episodes without realizing it. It's like you get into a trance.

Holy shit. I didn't know you could do that. I'll have to try that when I get around to playing the DS version.

I have been pretty big on defending this Endurance Run from the haters, but them calling it lumiaire instead of luminaire is grinding my gears pretty bad!

That can be a fatal decision for some builds. Nova Armor is way better then Moonbeam Armor due to status immunity. It is integral especially for top-tier Crono builds. Siren's Kiss is better then Valkerye since it can inflict stop; which is more favorable then the useless damage increase (but why are you even attacking with Marle?). The Rainbow outclasses both Crono weapons immediately so no big deal there. Al the vest/mails are outclassed as well.

So everything is negligible but it can be a seriously BAD idea to go Moonbeam > Nova. My best Crono build possible wrecks shit mainly due to the status immunity not being needed on the accessory/helm freeing up.

I think what warms my heart the most about this recent episode was them abusing Luminaire with gold stud, EXACTLY AS I SUGGESTED in this thread a few pages back.

...couldn't you get both, and just use Nova over Moonbeam?
Oops, my mistake on that part. But I guess the main point is that you don't gain anything from future jumping. In fact, I stopped doing it since it just wasted time and I knew Nova was all that was needed. That's probably why I forgot how it worked and my attention span is shit these days.

But you are correct, if you want to up your inventory you should time skip.

Still way better on Magus.

Haha. Ryan was going crazy with Luminaire today. I honestly can't blame him. It's a super effective tech. How can you say no to ultimate damage?

Chrono Trigger spoiler
When they showed that human going down a conveyor belt in that one room, followed by a scream when inside that large machine, that was pretty damn unsettling. It's moments like those that make this game an emotional roller coaster ride, although maybe that's putting it strongly.

Someone needs to make a Ryan "god damn it" montage video, if one doesn't exist yet. It's needed.

That machine cast Luminaire on her legs

Huh. I started watching this Endurance Run around the start of the Dark Ages/Antiquity segments just to see (and remember) a first timer's reactions to this part of the game. It's been so long since I first visited Zeal for the very first time, I'd forgotten how much of a mindfuck it is after everything that came before it.

I'm quite enjoying watching these two fumble around quests most of the Chrono vets now know second nature. And somewhat infuriating, but mostly entertaining.

I think it's shaping up to be a great Endurance Run. I understand why people would flip out about them not getting the password, but considering they had no idea and the game doesn't exactly make it plain what it required, I think they did how anyone would do given 10 seconds or less to react.
