Gizmodo gets its hands on the new iPhone prototype

So it gets lost at a bar and quickly gets picked up by Gizmodo who disassembles it despite Apple reporting it missing?

Right.

The iPhone on Verizon would sell more than every Verizon Android handset put together.

no doubt it would, but that wasnt the argument, anyway, it's OT and will only lead this thread like every other one

If its not intentional; then I feel sorry for the guy that just got canned (do remember before the iphone 3g there were a few ninja photos of apple staff using them months in advance in the wild - some creepy stalker shit going on there). If its intentional - then I don't really understand how this is better than just getting another press event done - but hey-ho.

Looks good, sort of. I think I'll wait until the second generation of this model though, whenever apple makes radical design decisions theres always a few hardware screw-ups (even with the ipad - as minor as they are). Still, very much looking forward to it ~

It was found lost in a bar in Redwood City

Whaaaat?!? How do you just leave that laying around or forget that you have it. Someone is definitely fired. And isn't this openly admitting to stealing?

Why don't they turn it on, or show it turned on? I'm assuming it's the same OS?

The article from the OP says that their source told them the phone was remote killed by Apple before it got to Gizmodo.

Someone finds it and sends it to gizmodo to take pictures and videos? Bullshit.

It comes out in a few months. Apple gave it to them.

camera flash is the only thing so far that has me going... everything else is either meh (SD slot, front facing camera) or unproven without developer demos (higher res screen).

fake edit - so MicroSD was wrong and it was just in fact a new SIM slot?

who cares about the OS, i want to know the memory, processors, screen type, etc

i still dont get the fascination of a front facing camera on a phone, think it would be more ideal for an ipad device then a phone

Haha, my first thread and I didn't even make it myself! :lol Thanks EvilLore, didn't mean to clutter up the iPad thread.

Right.
No NDA signed, and not stolen = no obligation to Apple. But maybe Apple won't invite them to press conferences anymore...

Cool, but I really don't think that is going to be the final look of it. Still nice to get some idea of the new stuff (cameras) that will be included.

This would make the most sense. HTC Incredible, arguably the closest phone Verizon has to iPhone, is coming out soon. This could be a way to make everyone hold off on getting one.

Yeah---

Among other chattering on the net, this was one of the biggest f ups in Apple's long line of non-leaked hardware devices.

At this point, Apple had better come clean or the zombies will eat them alive.

Probably just an illusion, but in one picture the 4G looks taller, and in the other one, the 4G looks smaller than the 3GS.

They've an obligation to return it and they certainly don't have the right to disassemble it

I would not be surprised if this was actually given to them, Steve has said that Gizmodo is one of his favorite sites. However if it really happened like the supposed story I can imagine that Steve is not going to invite them to the next keynote :lol

I don't see why everyone is gushing over this. Looks like a 3GS with a slightly better camera and designed like an iPod classic.

This will be mine when it's released. Super-ready for an upgrade to my 3G, and I love the new design. Much more utilitarian, but still sleek.

Did they state what the capacity is? I'm hoping for a 64 GB.

Apple's lawyers would be all over this like flies on shit. Totally planted.

Apple's lawyers also can't file motions on Sunday afternoons. I mean, they aren't ninjas. Injunctions and cease & desist orders don't magically pop up out of the ether.

If it's not planted, I feel like they don't have as much of a case if it was actually just found. Companies can usually sue for leaks based on the fact that the person that gave it to them probably broke an NDA and the receiver is complicit, kind of like an accomplice, in breaking that NDA. I am not really well-versed in the laws of finding lost items, however.

lol @ intentional leak theories.

You guys spend too much time on the gaming side.

Like teruterubozu said, Apple is usually quick with the damage control. Plus, it's just more fun this way.
I am one of those people who was waiting for the incredible and this is close to making me wait =(

I've seen paltry video game companies act faster with screenshot leaks. Apple is letting this one fly.

According to the person who found it, this iPhone was running iPhone OS 4.0 before the iPhone 4.0 announcement. The person was able to play with it and see the iPhone 4.0 features. Then, Apple remotely killed the phone before we got access to it. We were unable to restore because each firmware is device specific—3GS firmware only loads on 3GS devices—and the there are no firmwares available for this unreleased phone. Which is another clue to its authenticity.

Apple ninjas were deployed

I like that design.

Missing out on the 3GS doesn't feel so bad now. I'll be in a position to upgrade by the 2nd half of this year.

I don't like the design very much...at least it's better than the iphone 3g/3gs.

Also, I thought it would've had a bigger screen.

Maybe, but remember, if an Apple employee simply dropped this from his pocket while grinding on a hot co-ed at a danceclub, that's different from some dude leak his issued preview code of a game onto the net. The fact that this is *possibly* lost property makes it different from leaked property.

But who knows.

They do have an obligation to return it, once Apple claims it.

But they also have the legal right to disassemble it for no other reason than it helps identify the owner.

I realize this is completely shaky ground, but Apple hasn't claimed it and it was found in a bar. Gizmodo could do the ethical thing and return it immediately, but they are under no obligation until Apple steps up.
