I thought so too, but I have read speculation that the these may also act as hardware shutter buttons for the camera. We will see I guess.

The seams will stay if they are indeed intending to make an accessible battery. I don't see why they would as its a bit of a red herring IMO.
The seams are still unwelcome, but the volume buttons serving double duty as camera buttons makes sense. We'll have to wait and see.

I know there is an official iPhone thread, but this is hilarious. :lol Someone is getting fired.

You are looking at Apple's next iPhone. It was found lost in a bar in Redwood City, camouflaged to look like an iPhone 3GS. We got it. We disassembled it. It's the real thing, and here are all the details.

Apple has reported it missing.

What's new

• Front-facing video chat camera
• Improved regular back-camera (the lens is quite noticeably larger than the iPhone 3GS)
• Camera flash
• Micro-SIM instead of standard SIM (like the iPad)
• Improved display. It's unclear if it's the 960x460 display thrown around before—it certainly looks like it, with the "Connect to iTunes" screen displaying much higher resolution than on a 3GS.
• What looks to be a secondary mic for noise cancellation, at the top, next to the headphone jack
• Split buttons for volume
• Power, mute, and volume buttons are all metallic

What's changed

• The back is entirely flat, made of either glass (more likely) or shiny plastic in order for the cell signal to poke through. Tapping on the back makes a more hollow and higher pitched sound compared to tapping on the glass on the front/screen, but that could just be the orientation of components inside making for a different sound
• An aluminum border going completely around the outside
• Slightly smaller screen than the 3GS (but seemingly higher resolution)
• Everything is more squared off
• 3 grams heavier
• 16% Larger battery
• Internals components are shrunken, miniaturized and reduced to make room for the larger battery

Tons of details/pics/video at Gizmodo.

It's a prototype. That's not how it's going to look. This discussion is like looking at that Courier prototype that was two thick tablets pieced together and discussing the design decisions behind it like they were real.

Gizmodo's pictures make it look much better and thinner than the early blurry photos, at least. I bet that's the shape they're going with, but the seams are still on it right now because these prototypes out in public were held in rubber phone cases so people thought they were just 3Gs.

HOLY CRAP! Gizmodo apparently got their hands on the new iPhone prototype:

If they announce that exact phone I'll be buying yet another iPhone on day one.
Real deal then, I think the most interesting departure is the battery hinge, and possible user accessible battery, if that indeed stays in the final design ( not convinced the seams are staying)

I am calling it, pressing both volume buttons at the same time will be a camera function shortcut.

Yup. No way they let this leak like that.
Apple never does this. They are 50000% in the "all information is in the most locked of all lockboxes" column.

Someone fucked up.

Holy Shit someone is going to fired. Anyone know when Apple was planning to release this phone?
Should be late June/early July as all iPhone updates are.

What was interesting is that it was in a case designed to disguise it like a 3GS.

Which also makes one wonder if that is the final design.

But yeah, either way someone fucked up. :lol

That's a lot of industrial design for just a prototype case. My money is on it being the real thing, especially when you consider how close we are to a revision coming out.

this has to be some intentional plant, how could someone be walking around with one and forget about it, much less get drunk and leave it in a bar. although if it is true, considering how much apple prides itself on keeping its secrets, id imagine they have a relatively good idea who to fire.

Wait, mini SIM, why?

I won't buy one if I can't unlock it and put it on my contract I already have.

EDIT: Weird double post

That sound's awesome!

Front facing camera means the iPad will eventually get it, and therefore that is the version I will wait for. Good stuff.

i really like the design - just look at it next to that 3GS, it makes the current model look old already.

man i will navigate all the softbank red tape in the world to upgrade to this thing. i can't think of a thing they've missed with it.

Sooooo intentional. :lol

Apple best kept secrets are given to an employee to take out to a bar?

It's cool though, I like that kind of marketing.

I saw this on Saturday. Shit is insane. They literally dropped the next iPhone on the floor of a dance club.

I doubt this is planned. Its not unthinkable for a high level Apple exec to lose a prototype or secret phone. When you drunk and grinding with bitches, its easy to lose track of your phone. This would only be an intentional leak, IMO, if it was closer to the product launch, and done in a more direct way.

You can physically shave down your current SIM card.

If this goes to Verizon, I dunno how many Android loyalists are going to stick around either. This phone looks ballin as fuck.

why? verizon has the incredible, which probably stacks up rather well to this

I hope this is for real, I actually really like the more industrial looking form factor. Dunno if Apple would actually go for having seams visible in the final design, but it looks cool IMO.

so its going to be a micro sim enabled device like the ipad? which means... lolverizonlol?
The supposed Verizon version isn't umored until September. This would be the June At&t version.

Also, prototype, grain of salt, yadayada.

Looks like a step back in design to be honest. Visible pieces connecting on top, just less sleek overall. Better be some early prototype.

:D I loved the form factor of the OG iPhone, so this is fantastic news.

Day 1. My 3G is dying, cracked glass, cracked case, waiting for retirement.

Dude, my 3GS is still going strong but I LUST for this new iPhone. Day motherfucking one purchase.

Couldn't Gizmondo get sued for this? In fact, I don't understand how the article is still up. I suppose putting the genie back is impossible at this point, but they could have reacted faster.

Why don't they turn it on, or show it turned on? I'm assuming it's the same OS?

The Gizmodo post I saw on Saturday said it was running a new OS. But they also said the phone "died" and they couldn't turn it back on, or something.... I don't know, it does sound kind of fishy.

If the legitimately found it, they are under no obligation to keep it secret.

Awesome. Skipped the 3GS for the next iteration... I'll definitely be upgrading to this one.

I told you all it was real, but no one believed me. Bastards.

I think it's sexy hot and I will upgrade to this new formfactor come June, yes yes I will.
