Stolen or Lost? The lines get a bit blurry if the employee was drinking and lost it. I don't think anyone stole it from him.

Gruber is saying that Apple considers it 'stolen'. Just saying that personally I would find Apple legal quite scary if they have a reason to come after me.

well i know if I was said apple employee and I lost the top secret new iphone, I would say that I was robbed at gunpoint and stripped naked as well....:lol
That's nothing compared to what the "Worldwide Loyalty Team" will do to him.

They probably have the scariest legal team of all the big CE companies. Probably more so than Nintendo. MS has all the money to toss around, but Apple I see as being vicious and violent in their retribution.

You're a trip. Everything is black and white in LKBAP's world. :lol Of course Apple considers it stolen -- they'd expect their prototype would be returned if it were found. Kinda like how we all have disclaimers at the bottom of our work emails.

You'd think that Gizmodo would clear it with their legal dept before they would go and post this.
Scoop is too big to worry about that sort of thing. What are their realistic repercussions? If Apple sues them, so be it. They're going to be quoted by every news agency in the world.

Think of all the money they get from the page views.
Yeah I'm sure that's how they conduct their business, estimating revenue from increased page views and weighing that against the cost of any possible lawsuit :lol

I'm fairly certain that this was pickpocketed off an employee testing it in the wild. I doubt Apple will take any overt legal action, since that would be tantamont to a confirmation. But Gizmodo's probably going to feel some heat behind-the-scenes... not that they'll care with having bought the tech scoop of the year.

It's an iPhone. :lol

EDIT: LC shot first.

knowing apple, there won't be a memory card slot. besides that would kill off any higher storage versions they would release later.

The fuck?
I thought that was just something the very first models had because of hardware limitations, sounds really impractical and lame to not have a memory card slot in a modern phone.

Some providers have twin SIMs for that. You have 2 SIMs with the same info, service, etc. Only one can be used at a time though.

yeah my phone provider in singapore offers 2 sims(they call them twin sim), but the catch is that only the last sim used would be active. i guess it's not so bad.

I can certainly see Gizmodo not being invited to anymore Apple events.....

Didn't some guy in China or something get an 3GS iPhone stolen and then committed suicide or something.

Edit: Yepp

A Foxconn employee in China has committed suicide, after a fourth-gen Apple iPhone prototype he was entrusted with went missing.

Apple hasn’t had a memory card in any of its portable devices ever. apparently, not everyone cares that much about it.

it also helps that the lowest end model still comes with 8GB of memory. a lot of other phones only come with 2 or 4.

yeah, if you get a lifetime ban for buying too many iPads from an Apple store clerk...

Anyway, it looks like a very solid update and will definitely tempt me into getting my first iPhone.

That's what entered my head first too. No more pool parties for you, Gizmodo.
Oh well, plenty more product unveiling liveblogs out there! I must admit I enjoy their site but I lost a lot of respect for them after that juvenile IR remote bullshit they pulled.

That is true.

I keep on seeing this John Gruber's blog posted over and over. Who is he?

when was the lat time you saw an apple product with a memory card slot? besides the new macbooks, which use the slot for a complete different purpose anyways.

This could backfire on Gizmodo if it turns out that the phone was actually stolen, and not found.

It is possible the phone was just pilfered from someone. Happens everyday. Thief just happened to either understand that it was something special, or sold it to someone that did. It's all very shady.

It could also be the case that the Apple employee DID lose it, and claimed it stolen to save his arse... which might or might not work depending on the wrath of His Jobness.

When is it supposed to be released anyway? Early June?

Looks sexy, can't wait. Just hope the upgrade costs from my 3Gs to this don't hurt too badly. Does anyone remember how apple/AT&T managed the day 1 3G to day 1 3Gs upgrades? I can't remember, I don't think I had to pay any more than a new customer.

Speaking of that, it would be nice that the new model raises the minimum standard to 16GB.

Oh and flush away all the previous lines of iPhones. 4G only Apple!

I'm pretty sure being in possession of a consumer gadget, no matter how sought-after, has never gotten anyone laid.

I played old Duran Duran songs on my Sony D-66 to my girlfriend the night I lost my virginity. Take that Mr. Whitta.

Well I haven't kept up to date on the latest apple products since they revealed the iPhone, which simply wasn't for me, but haven't their laptops had memory card slots for ages?

I do understand their reason for not including the slots in their ipods and whatnot (so they can just sell bigger models it seems) but that won't make me overlook it missing a, in my opinion, important hardware feature.

god know how much it'll cost me to import an unlocked iPhone 4G! the 3GS cost me $1086 imported and factory unlocked(no regrets till this day), it took my provides 6-7 months to come out with it, and i sure wasn't ready to wait that long. i expect the 4G to rape my wallet!

They'll kill the 3G, drop the 16GB 3GS to $99 and intro a 32 and 64GB of the new model.

Fired? If all he got for this was getting fired, I would be relieved.

I say, check the river as soon as possible. Before some fucking fish eat the guy.

card slots in modern phones are typically for one reason and one reason only.. cost savings measures. Offload the cost of storage to the user instead of the device and your device looks less expensive. Beyond that, especially in phones, there isn't really any sort of convenience to a card slot for 99.9% of the users. 99.9% of users will buy a single card and use it for the life of the phone. they'll move it over to a new phone when they get one, etc. In the case of an iphone, automatics backup and restore takes the place of this.

I am not saying memory cards are stupid, unnecessary, or anything like that.. I'm just pointing out that 64GB on an SD card vs. 64GB of built-in memory really won't carry any pro or con with it for 99.9% of the users who will buy a phone. a feature is a feature is always a bullet point, but considering apple doesn't care about cost too much and as someone else said, can sell different sizes for more than the wholesale difference in memory prices, I can understand them leaving out an SD slot especially when the vast majority of buyers simply won't care.

edit - to put this another way, I understand you being annoyed with the lack of a card slot, but really don't find an objective reason for it to be impractical or must-have, especially at the expected sizes of the phone (16/32/64).

It's all conjecture since only two parties know the absolute truth, and it isn't Apple nor Gawker/Gizmodo.

i'm digging the glass/ceramic back, and with the breakdown showing an apple cutout in the aluminum back, i wonder if this means that the logo will be backlit like on the Macbooks?

Sweet, they took it apart. Real deal and all that.

That would be uber annoying.

Clearly it was the Duran Duran that closed the deal, not the device.
Let me guess: Hungry Like the Wolf or Girls on Film. I cant think of anything else Duran Duran that would close the deal. Perhaps Rio.

I'd want the all-metal shell to return myself (but I understand that greatly interferes with WiFi and/or 3G reception)...but kudos to Apple for greatly improving the new iPhone's durability over the 3G/3GS by putting the buttons, dock port, switches, etc. all within the metal side edges...much less having to worry about cracks in the plastic shell due to everyday wear-and-tear from using those things over time.

That is, if this is all real =)
