Gizmodo gets its hands on the new iPhone prototype

Funny if it turns out the seams are staying but the screws are what is missing in the final :lol

The gizmo do prototype didn't show the processor because they didn't bother to pry of the EM shielding off of the chip.

I will be dissapointed if entry version is 16gb again, I was hoping for 32 so I could just buy the base version.

I'm kind of the same, but on the other end.

I was hoping the goalposts would have shifted up a level to make the models include a 64GB option. Perhaps Apple is falling in love with this 3 option world they've created with the iPad?

Three? Wait till you see the other 3 wifi only iPhones ;)

Wouldn't your avatar work better as a still?

She's all fidgety...when it's supposed to getting me excited.

no. it only chops at 1 frame. was the best loop i could get, and she looks like shes dancing!

edit: wouldnt yours work better if the damn thing solved?!

:lol

I guess I should just thank you for using the avatar and reminding me of how "out of nowhere" hot that girl was instead of criticizing it, eh?

Thats right. Although I've always liked her in her short scenes on How I Met Your Mother.

Thank Costanza, he told me to use this avatar for a little while instead of my usual rotating avatars. It will switch back to that soon enough.

Maybe they'll do three SKUs like the iPad and offer 16/32/64.

Hooray for (tastefully concealed) boobie avatars! You could ping-pong yours to eliminate the jump.

What is ping-pong? reverse the frames? i could but then i would need to cut out frames to keep the size down. i'll see..

So a confirmed A4 chip (for the most part), which goes back to the original theory that this could be called the iPhone A4. I would be down with that.

The screws look like the only major change, but just that alone makes it look better than the Gizmodo one. Now if they would just drop the seams.

They could, but I'm not sure how much I like the trend of offering too many different variations.

...granted, we're just talking about size differences vs. component differences, and the consumer probably has a good idea that 16 < 32 < 64... but still!

Wonder how many people that own iPhone's always spring for the lowest option?

Of course I do, and there is this wonderful thing called Boot Camp.

Swing and a miss, Scorcho.
I haven't tried Boot Camp with any games on my new iMac. Do PC games like COD:MW2 work well on an iMac with Boot Camp?

Why wouldn't it have used the A4? Power consumption, heat profile, and, like, Apple-ownership make it an obvious choice. What was the alternative, a snapdragon?

You get comparable performance for the specs. Not quite 100% efficiency, but not far off, either.

Assuming you have a newer iMac, you can run CoD:MW2 without a problem.

When it's not 100% efficient... is it a matter of it not being fast, or is it a matter of crashing here and there?

not as fast. it just doesnt take advantage of the hardware as much as it should

You know even though this thing has an A4 I doubt it'll be clocked to 1Ghz like the iPad. It'll probably be clocked down to 800Mhz or something, still super fast but probably not as fast as the iPad.

Don't forget Steam for Mac launches in a few days, hopefully it will lead to more Mac-native games.

Oh yeah it was largely expected, but confirmation is tits! :D

the new imacs with 4850 gfx chips and i5 cpus run most games great in bootcamp.

i can run mass effect/ ME2, dragon age at 2560 x 1440 with all settings on high and get 30fps.

source games run at 60 fps, no problem.

crysis is still too demanding, though. gotta drop resolution to ~1600 x 1050 and details to medium to get 30 fps +

For me the exciting thing isn't necessarily just the speed, but battery life too. Considering the iPhone 4/HD/whatever has a much larger battery than previous iPhone models *and* it's running the low-power A4 chip could mean not having to charge the thing every day (which would be nice) or at least get really great battery life while using the OS4 features like multitasking.

why do you think the A4 is going to use less power than the existing Cortex in the 3GS? they're both low power chips of similar architecture.

and the bigger battery might be needed as more power would be used to drive the higher res display.

better battery life would be great, but nothing we've seen really makes it clear that this will be the case.

Yeah you're probably right. Would love to see the iPhone get better battery life than it does currently though. Bring on WWDC!

I think this would be a good first iPhone for me. I'm strongly considering this phone, in part due to the higher resolution and nicer form factor than the original.

Yeah for me the best new feature of the iPhone4 is better battery life. Who knows how much better it is over the 3GS, but I'm hoping for a big jump. I want to be able to last the whole day with heavy usage.

yea i wouldnt be surprised if its a pretty big jump. they have been really focused on their battery stats with the Macbooks, im sure they want to be able to show off a great battery life for the iPhone

Forgive me for my lack of technical knowledge here, but what are the advantages of the A4 processor? Is it primarily speed and power efficiency? So even if the iPhone has the same amount of RAM, it would still perform better?

I haven't read through the last page so this question might have been answered already

Well, the assumption would be that an iPhone with the same processor (assuming it isn't some modified version of it) would freaking soar.

The iPad runs with this processor, and that has to support a larger resolution screen than even the rumored upgraded screen resolution the new iPhone would be supporting. t should also potentially be even more energy efficient than previous models, so I'd expect to see some pretty impressive battery life numbers with the shift.

The iPhone and the iPad use the same amount of RAM currently anyways, so this would just be the same specs driving a less power hungry system, meaning it should scream.

All speculative, but that's what I take from it.

Ah, ok. Thanks for the explanation. I'm assuming/hoping the 4th gen iPod Touch will use the A4 as well.

This is amazing.

REDWOOD CITY, California — Police closed in on the man who found and sold a prototype 4G iPhone after his roommate called an Apple security official and turned him in, according to a newly unsealed document in the ongoing police investigation.

The tip sent police racing to the home of 21-year-old Brian Hogan, and began a strange scavenger hunt for evidence that a friend of Hogan’s had scattered around this Silicon Valley community. Police recovered a desktop computer stashed inside a church, a thumb drive hidden in a bush alongside the road, and the iPhone’s serial-number stickers from the parking lot of a gas station.

And the unsealed affadavit: http://www.wired.com/images_blogs/threatlevel/2010/05/iphone_affidavit.pdf

Jobs personally called Gizmodo to request the phone back. Gizmodo’s response back to Steve:

"Hey Steve, this email chain is off the record on my side.

I understand the position you're in, and I want to help, but it conflicts with my own responsibilities to give the phone back without any confirmation that its real, from apple, officially.

Something like that - from you or apple legal - is a big story, that would make up for giving the phone back right away. If the phone disappears without a story to explain why it went away, and the proof it went to apple, it hurts our business. And our reputation. People will say this is a coordinated leak, etc.

I get that it would hurt sales to say this is the next iphone. I have no interest in hurting sales. That does nothing to help Gizmodo or me.

Maybe Apple can say it's a lost phone, but not one that you've confirmed for production - that it is merely a test unit of sorts. Otherwise, it just falls to apple legal, which serves the same purpose of confirmation. I don't want that, either.

Gizmodo lives and dies like many small companies do. We don't have access, or when we do, we get it taken away. When we get a chance to break a story, we have to go with it, or we perish. I know you like waltand pogue, and like working with them, but I think Gizmodo has more in common with old Apple than those guys do. So I hope you understand where I'm coming from.

Right now, we have nothing to lose. The thing is, Apple PR has been cold to us lately. It affected my ability to do my job right at iPad launch. So we had to go outside and find our stories like this one, aggressively.

I want to get this phone back to you ASAP. And I want to not hurt your sales when the products themselves deserve love. But I have to get the story of the missing prototype out, and how it was returned to apple, with some acknowledgement it is Apple's

And I want to work closer with Apple, too. I'm not asking for more access - we can do our jobs with or without it - but again, this is the only way we can survive while being out of things. That's my position on things.

Also:

There's some interesting stuff in there, such as Brian Hogan's response to his friends who asked him not to sell the iPhone on account that it might ruin Gray Powell's career. "Sucks for him," Hogan retorted. "He lost his phone. Shouldn't have lost his phone.”

And regarding Hogan:

Police closed in on the man who found and sold a prototype 4G iPhone after his roommate called an Apple security official and turned him in, according to a newly unsealed document in the ongoing police investigation.

The tip sent police racing to the home of 21-year-old Brian Hogan, and began a strange scavenger hunt for evidence that a friend of Hogan’s had scattered around the Silicon Valley community of Redwood City. Police recovered a desktop computer stashed inside an area church, a thumb drive hidden in a bush alongside the road, and the iPhone’s serial number stickers from the parking lot of a gas station.

And it was more than $5k:

According to the document, the roommate said Hogan told her he received a total of $8,500 for the phone. The roommate also told police Gizmodo promised Hogan a bonus if and when Apple officially announced the product.

And the charges:

Police are investigating Gizmodo editor Jason Chen for possible receipt of stolen property, copying of a trade secret, and destruction of property worth more than $400, according to the affidavit, which was filed in support of a search warrant for Chen’s home. Gizmodo partly disassembled the iPhone, a process that Apple alleges left it damaged.

Apple also told the police that the publication of Gizmodo’s story was “immensely damaging” to the company, because consumers would stop buying current generation iPhones in anticipation of the upcoming product. Asked the value of the phone, Apple told the police “it was invaluable.”

More idiocy:

Apple also documented damage to the prototype iPhone upon its return, noting that a ribbon cable had been broke, a screw had been inserted incorrectly causing an electrical short, snaps for the back plate had been broken, and several screws had been stripped.

Gizmodo lied that he had tried to return it to the owner:

She [the roommate] told Apple that Hogan had found the phone and had been offering it to news outlets in exchange for a payment, despite having identified Powell as the rightful owner from a Facebook page visible on the phone’s display when he found it.

http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2010/05/roommate-iphone/

What a mess. :lol

From the affidavit:

Martinson said she and other friends attempted to talk Hogan out of selling the iPhone prototype on the basis that the sale would ruin the career of Robert "Gray" Powell (Apple engineer who lost the phone). Hogan's response to her was that it, "Sucks for him. He lost his phone. Shouldn't have lost his phone."

Dooooooooosh.

Apparently the guy Gizmodo sweetened the pot for Hogan. Hogan said he got $8,500 for the phone and would recieve a cash bonus in July from Gizmodo if and when Apple made an official product announcement.

Wow...holy shit. :lol

That response from Lam to Jobs... seriously, that's some balls right there. Holding the phone hostage until they got that a letter of confirmation from Apple so they could do another story on it? That's some sleaze. "Give us a letter so we can do a story." Wow. Is that journalism?

Welp that's all folks, JIZZMODO is going to be on Apple's shit list for a long time, and other companies will probably distance themselves from them because of this shit.

No, it's them being douchebags. I can't believe that letter. I suspect Lam's claim that Gizmodo can do their jobs without any cooperation from Apple at all will now be put to the test...
