You can buy it for the unsubsidized price and not get locked into a contract, I think.
Isn't that like so expensive? And would it even solve the monthly fee problem? What is the cheapest you can go monthly? I've tried navigating AT&T's site but it's like getting lost without a GPS. They don't list it all out in plain english. Or offer an ala carte plan. Which is what would benefit me the most.

I think it's much more expensive, but who knows how they'll price the new iPhone.

It looks like there will be cheaper (but not unlimited) plans coming soon. This might actually be a better option, I'm in a foreign country that prices based on data used, and I really only used about 50mb in the past 10 days, mainly browsing GAF, blogs, email, and Google Maps.

You wanting a phone with a subsidized price but no contract makes no sense. It's one or the other.

I get the impression that Steve Jobs doesn't know the full story about how the phone was lost and the intentions and actions of the people who took it. There is no way for him to know with 100% accuracy what went down (too many people are protecting themselves over the issue) but he's talking as if he does.

AT&T has announced new data plan pricing & tethering, starting on June 7:

AT&T has announced details about iPhone tethering as well as new data plans for smartphone users.
Customers can pick the new data plan that best meets their needs – either a $15 per month entry plan or a $25 per month plan with 10 times more data. Current smartphone customers are not required to switch to the new plans, but can choose to do so without a contract extension.

The new plans kick in on June 7th and each plan includes unlimited access to AT&T Wi-Fi Hotspots. The newly announced data plans seem to replace the current $30/month unlimited and include:

Data Plus - 200 MB of data for $15/month. Additional 200MB for another $15.
DataPro - 2GB of data for $25/month. Additional 1 GB of data for $10.
Tethering - Additional $20/month for DataPro customers.

iPhone users are specifically mentioned as being supported by the Tethering option, and support will be deployed with the release of iPhone OS 4.0.

The press release seems to indicate that Tethering will only be allowed with the DataPro plan. This would mean that existing iPhone customers would have to replace their current $30/month unlimited plan with the $25/month 2GB plan in order to qualify for the $20/month tethering plan. In other words, existing iPhone users who wish to take advantage of tethering would find their data rates increasing from $30/month to $45/month ($25 + $20) and find themselves limited to 2GB of data. AT&T indicates that if you don't want tethering, you may keep the current $30/month unlimited rate.

Meanwhile, it seems new iPhone customers (after June 7th) will not be given the option for a $30/month unlimited plan, while existing customers are grandfathered in. AT&T states that 98% of their smartphone customers use less than 2GB of data per month.

I really don't get why american carriers charge extra for tethering. You're just using the same service on a different device.

That is the equivalent to home ISPs charging extra per month for using a router instead of just a modem.

There's one that's a download manager for Safari which I've tested and seems to really negatively affect the battery if you have Safari open much, even when you're downloading nothing.
That's interesting. Thanks for the reply.

I didn't say I didn't want a contract. I don't mind getting locked into a contract when it's on an iPhone. Because I know I'll love the iPhone, so it's not like I got a shitty cell phone and am stuck using it for 2 years or whatever. What I said is what kinds of options do I have for monthly plans. If I'm paying too much for something I won't use and not getting enough of the stuff I do use then it's not worth it. But if I can customize it to be perfect for my usage, I don't care.

I've had my iPhone 2 years and have only downloaded 1.4GB of data in that.

2GB a month is fine... people like to bitch just because it doesn't say 'Unlimited'.

You'd struggle to use 2GB a month on a 3G network that doesn't allow app downloads over 20MB, anyway.

My home button just stopped working on my 3G. Any ideas on when the the next phone is coming out? (and the best way to handle this in the meantime?)

jailbreak and install a program called mQuickDo. It duplicates home button functionality with swipes along the edge of the screen. Fully customizable, too.

How can he jailbreak it without home button usage?

Pretty much. I had like 1.5 GB until I used it for tethering when my broadband connection didn't work. And that was 1.5 GB in almost a year.

I generally use between 1.5-2.5gb per month on my iPhone. I stream a LOT of video on the go and use Pandora Radio in my car all the time, so perhaps that explains it?

your battery seems to vastly outclass mine. if I did that, I'd be paying more for the electricity bill than for the phone bill. :lol

Just because you don't use the video capabilities doesn't mean no one else does.

You're also ignoring that this isn't just about your phone anymore. There are iPads and tethering options now.

Oy vey, I forgot about video chat on the upcoming iPhone. That can’t be a good combination with a 2GB limit and overage charges.

Thank goodness i have my unlimited plan. Wonder if people with the unlimited plan sell it to someone to use.

Everyone considering dropping to the 2GB plan because you don't use it right now:

-You're only saving $5.
-If you ever go over, you have to pay $10/GB (effectively negating 2 months worth of savings)

As the network improves and the content providers get on board with the iPhone (Netflix, Hulu, iTunes if they ever start streaming, etc) you are going to wish you had kept the unlimited plan. And it'll be too late.

I mean, just 3 years ago my cell data usage was 0 kb/mo. In another 3 years I will probably be using much more than my current 1.5GB/mo. The last thing I want to worry about is how much bandwidth I'm using on my iPhone. Completely counter-intuitive to having an always-connected device at your fingertips, IMO.

You do not need to use the button, whether you use Spirit or even Blackra1n. I know because I did it (my button is also broken, along with my screen, and 3G radio).

Pretty sure Gizmodo is banned for life for Apple PR.

Also, just really hope there is a $99 4gen iPhone, and that is not just a 3gs for $99. Don't really need more space. And my current 3g needs to be replaced pretty bad. Wifi died and it very infrequently reboots when I wake it up.

Google Spirit JB, download that and click it. Should jailbreak without any user input.

Will I be able to turn off the home button? Because right now the phone is unuseable as it constantly is exiting apps and going to the home screen without it being presse.d

My 3g has gone to shit as well. Barely holds a charge and frequently reboots. But I wouldn't count on a $99 4th gen. Walmart has already dropped the 3gs to $99, Apple stores will most likely do the same come next Monday.

You could always open your phone and physically disconnect the button from the circuit board. I mean your phone is fucked anyways.

Buy it with a credit card? Call your phone company and ask them about their extended warranty. I bet you money you have a 2 year extended warranty with credit card company. They basically will pay for repair/replacement.

I just checked my upgrade date status by dialing *639# on my launch date 3GS and BAM they made me eligible for an upgrade with the $18 fee!!

Come on cheap iPhone, come to daddy!

Tomorrow is going to be AWESOME following the WWDC liveblogs!

i bought my iphone last April (yes, i got a 3G even though i knew the new iphone was around the corner) and am eligible for the same $18 upgrade fee. that's bananas, and might keep me away from Sprint and the Evo.
