Good games for a laptop?

Besides the stuff that's against the TOS here (oh no the "e" and "r" words), what are good PC games for laptops? I just got a new avertec laptop (shared video and cpu, so i'd imagine 3D won't be that great) and I was wondering what PC games are good on the road and are good with a touch pad and kb vs a mouse and kb.. Oh, and yeah i have 802.11g on here with hotspot access.

Hey, the laptop I'm buying while I'm over seas is actually quite a bit faster than my desktop. P4-3.6 GHz (1mb cache) + 1gb ram + GeForce 6800go PCI-E...etc...

It benches very well and, like I said, beats out my desktop by quite a wide margin. :P

Hey Dark what system is that and where'd you get it? I just got an emachine M6811 (Athlon 64 3400, 512MB RAM, 60 GB 7200 RPM, ATI 9600 Mobility) off of ebay and I'm already feeling inadequate. heh.

Several different companies are working on laptops based upon this model, but this is the Sager unit. This is basically the first PCI-E laptop on the market. One of the nice things, of course, is the fact that the graphics card is now removable. We finally have modular components!

Also, this particular model features an s-video INPUT, which I need for my consoles when I don't have my TV with me.

Take a look at one of the benchmarks. 9860 is the laptop in question...

Why the fuck would you want to play Doom 3, much less on a laptop?

If you can run Doom 3 well, you're f*cking set for anything else on the market right now (and in the near future). That's why. :)

I think I can safely say that's top of the line right there. Fucking Amazing. Only setback (besides the wallet) is the battery life. And people say the PSP has a short life heh.

That test setup is odd. Since when has ATI beaten Nvidia in Doom 3 benches:

Hell, the X850 XT is considerably slower than the 6800 Ultra. I really doubt those benches you posted are accurate.

I dunno, they weren't simply testing video cards, you know. Doom 3 is relies VERY heavily on CPU speed (I know this first hand). The AGP 6800 cards were tested on an AMD 3200+ CPU while the PCI-E X800 was tested on a faster CPU. That actually makes a pretty big difference, ya know...

Case in point...

My old 2.4 GHz P4b scored 35.7 fps on timedemo 1 when running in high detail mode (at 640x480 + SmartShader blur). I have upgraded my motherboard and CPU to a 3.2 GHz P4c and now I bench around 79 fps when running that same demo. That's quite a leap...

My videocard in both cases was a Radeon 9700 Pro...

How bout playin' some old point-and-click adventures? That will get your mind workin':)

My recommendation: The Longest Journey

Deus Ex
Grim Fandango
Any Black Isle/Bioware game
Diablo2/Warcraft3/Starcraft

Then your laptop, even lacking power becomes a big Win.

My Alienware Area-51m would disagree with you. :) I don't have a problem running games like Doom 3 and Half-Life 2 on it with high graphics setting enabled.

Baldur's Gate 2 (Throne of Bhaal)
Diablo 2

Adventure:
Discworld Noir
Monkey Island 3/4
Grim Fendango
Syberia 1/2

Sports:
Football Manager 2005

FPS:
Serious Sam 1/2

Sim:
Falcon 4.0

Edited to make a longer list..

It looks like Alienware isn't even selling the model I got over the summer and has started selling even MORE powerful laptops now, but my specs are 3.2ghz P4 Extreme Edition w/Hyper Threading, 1GB of RAM, 7200 RPM 60GB HD, CDR-W/DVD+R drive, and a ATI Radeon Mobile 9600 graphics card. The laptop itself ihas a 15 inch screen with a maximum resolution of 1680x1050, really isn't very heavy. The AC is like a brick though, and battery life is terrible...lasts for about 45 minutes to an hour tops, but I'm never using it in a place without a power outlet, so it doesn't bother me.

What I love about Alienware laptops is that you can change the graphics card yourself, so if I wanted to get a Radeon 9700 or an nVidia goFX 5700 card, all I have to do is order one from Alienware and I can easily install it myself; with other brands you either can't upgrade the graphics card at all, or you have to ship the laptop to the company to install it for you and even pay an installation fee in some cases.

I've been able to run any game I try at maximum settings with no problems, although for a smoother experience in Doom 3 or Half Life 2, I do have to tone down some of the graphics settings a little bit. I'm waiting for Alienware to start selling ATI Radeon Mobile 9800 cards before I upgrade.

Well, the modular design is pretty standard. I just ordered a PCI-Express based laptop (with GF6800go) that will allow for easy swapping of other PCI-E cards. There is also an X-800 mobile PCI-E card on the way.

I went for the 3.6 GHz model (though there is also a 3.8 available). I even have two hard drives in it. :P

Your laptop seems pretty nice, though. The ONLY lacking piece would be the graphics card, but you could always replace it if need be...

You say your screen is a "15 inch screen with a maximum resolution of 1680x1050", though. How large is it? The one I just ordered does the same resolution, but is a 17" screen. I have no real reference as to how large that will seem...

Yeah, the graphics card was outdated when we ordered the laptop...I figured it would save a little bit of cash and then I'd get a 9800 when they become available.

I can get another HD and install it myself if need be. :) I have an external 200GB HD that I use for storing most of my stuff on though. I didn't pay for the laptop; it was a gift from my father and he was only going to spend a certain amount of money. This laptop cost around $3,200. I could have gotten something even more powerful but this seems to work great for eveyrthing I use my computer for, so no complaints from me!

You can see the specs for Alienware PCs at their home page; I know squat about PC hardware so I may have missed something.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by that. ^_^;

These should be the exact specs:

15.4" WSXGA+ widescreen
Resolution: 1680x1050
Aspect Ratio: 16:10

Well, I dunno, nothing really specific. Just, how big does it feel. :P I'm used to my 19" desktop monitor, so I'm hoping the 17" 16:10 display should feel large enough. Dumb question, I suppose.

Well, it feels the same to me, since I used a 15" monitor with my last computer, too. :) I use the 1680x1050 resolution, and it works great for me; the important thing is that the screen is good quality and won't have any ghosting/blurring issues. I'd say the downgrade from 19" to 17" won't be TOO bad and you'll be used to it in no time.

That's good. :P

It's going to double as an output device for my consoles as well. I may not have a TV available to me in Japan (though, it is a furnished apartment...so it's possible I suppose), so I will be using the built in s-video input for gaming. Probably use d-scaler or something to improve the image, if possible...

That looks pretty nice, but if it really gets to you, a 19"-20" TV with S-Video probably wouldn't cost too much anyway. Are you going to be living in an apartment complex by yourself, or is it more of a dorm type setting? When I was in Japan this past summer, the place I stayed it was full of foreigners who were giving stuff away when they moved out, including 25" TVs.

I passed on them and just used the capture card I bought for gaming when I was there, which worked fine once I bought an S-Video cable. :)

Dumb question: The capture card I bought is Japanese, so all the software is full of Kanji. I can do what I need to with it and read some parts, but an English GUI would be nice. Is there a way for me to download someone else's software and use it with the card?

I will be living alone (sniff). I'll be there for like a year or two (possibly more, depending on several factors). We'll see. Leaving early June (finally). College took longer than anticipated, though, which is why I've been delayed so long (oh well, getting out with two majors). I wanted to get the laptop now, though, so I could break it in and take care of any issues I might have early on (plus, I can finally play LAN games without moving all kinds of equipment around).

As for that software, just learn the kanji! I'm running my machine in Japanese mode (required to play several Falcom titles), so a lot of my apps and control panel options are in Japanese. No problem, really, just learn the kanji. Always good to add more to your collection of knowledge. :)

Where are you going to be living? Tokyo? I applied for JET and hope to be in Japan (WHERE in Japan is a different story though) next summer too.

Nah, I'll be in Nagoya (location of headquarters) most likely. There are a couple other branches out and about, but it's looking pretty likely that I'll end up there now. Hey, if you are around next summer and have a chance, I'd love to have you stop by. You'd be welcome to stay for a bit as well.

FREE PLACE TO STAY? I'LL BE WAITING FOR YOU WHEN YOU GET THERE IN JUNE. :lol

Don't know where I'll end up...I think with JET you go to Tokyo for a few days then it's on to wherever you get placed. I put in for Osaka, but I doubt I'll get that position if I get accepted.

What's your job if you don't mind me asking...

Well, I work for Muhr und Bender KG or, more specifically, the US Mubea, Inc plant in Florence, KY (though I live in Cincinnati).

http://www.mubea.com/english/index.htm

A joint venture was formed with Chuo Spring a couple years back and they formed CMSC. I will actually be working for Chuo, however.

http://www.chkk.co.jp/english/index_e.html

What am I doing, you ask? Well, I actually do both IT work and some mechanical engineering development work. Mubea is actually VERY good about sending those who wish to travel around the world. There is a constant stream of young Germans that stay in the US and work for Mubea USA, for example.

holy bejesus, battery life on Laptops is horrible. I got maybe an hour and half on mine just my playing solitaire and listening to some music.

I can play FM2005 on mine for 2+ hours and it's a very CPU intensive game.. something's wrong with your batteries.

Mine is a Celeron 1.33, not even a Centrino..
