Drudge has a headline indicating Google Maps shows Taiwan as a province of China. Probably about that.

TSU Legislator Huang Chung-yung (???) said Google was providing false information and demanded a public apology from the search engine.

Haha! Good luck getting the actual search engine to apologise. Hmmm...maybe he could google 'sorry'.

BBC has an article.

Taiwan has asked the internet search engine Google to stop referring to the island as a province of China on its map web site.

The foreign ministry is demanding a correction, saying it has had no response to an earlier call for an amendment nearly a month ago.

Legislators from the pro-independence Taiwan Solidarity Union are urging the public to e-mail Google in protest.

They want the company to refer to Taiwan as an independent state.

Such a move would provoke China, which considers Taiwan as part of its territory.

Legislators say they have been inundated with telephone calls from the public and say they may announce further steps this week if they do not get a correction from Google.

The politicians say many international media companies, eager to expand their presence in the Chinese market, are succumbing to pressure from Beijing.

Last month another internet search engine, Yahoo, was accused by the media watchdog, Reporters without Borders, of behaving as a Chinese police informant in order to further its business ambitions.

The media group said the company had provided the Chinese authorities with information that led to the jailing of a journalist charged with divulging state secrets.

A Yahoo spokeswoman said it had to abide by local laws.

Besides, Google Maps is buying/licensing its data from another source; Google controls the layout/presentation but cannot control the data itself.

How about you do an iota of research regarding global economics before hitting the 'Post New Topic' button.

Lol...why don't YOU do an iota of research regarding and realize the importance to Taiwan being perceived as soverign. Should everything be boiled down to money?

Google isn't a wing of the federal government and isn't a form of American propaganda, so why should it care?

Taiwan is an independent state, China has no government power. Google is doing this to suck up to China, it'd be nice if companies sucked up to democracies more.

In business to DO business in certain places you have to DO business.

if this were a debate solely focusing on realpolitiks and soverign nation-state recognition of Taiwan you'd have a point. Google has no legal inclination or need to favor 'democracies' or to act as an additional propaganda wing for certain political ideologues. you'd have a much better argument at demanding that the US government break off conciliatory ties with the 'fascist' state than Google for simply participating in the global market.
