Google I/O is today. Anyone catching the Keynote?

I'm looking forward to seeing what Android 16 will bring

It's all AI, funny seeing how far techbros are going to promote not having friends and having their AI be your "friend" instead.

there hasn't been an interesting mobile OS update in years.

That's probably a good thing as it shows the tech has evolved but all this new stuff is garbage and fluff.

That's pretty much what it was.

Samsung's Project Moohan Android XR headset looks great, but you just know it's going to cost a four figure sum.
nah, i cant see them make the same mistake as Apple, if it ain't sub $1000 it's not going to sell

So when the AI stuff gets past the uncanny valley and starts to become a weapon used to disrupt societies by confusing them as to what is real - which in a philosophical sense is going to make heads explode - are we going to revert back to print media in order to "lock down" creditable information?

For the past few months now, I told Gemini to refer to me as Commander and I've been referring to it as "Number 1", which it still remembers.

Print media wasn't immune to this

It got MUCH worse when photoshop and digital editing became a thing in the mid-90s. I doubt there is any way to put the AI genie back in the bottle.

Yea, I guess I don't know what I mean then. I don't think people take Weekly World News seriously - I'm sure there are a few outliers, but I get what you're saying. I meant more reputable sources, like the Times or New York Post... but even those.... well fuck.

I just see it getting bad in a hurts us more than it helps us sort of way.

Absolutely agree. We've set up a system that incentivizes companies and news agencies to blatantly lie to people or to spin a narrative that is heavily skewed all for profit or political motivations. The people in power (in every country, not to get too political) benefit from this to such a great degree that the chances of things like this becoming regulated are almost zero, and nobody trusts that if they did do that it would be in the interest of the people.

Take most of the "big" televised events that happened in the last 80 years since televisions became prevalent: the JFK assassination, the moon landing, the challenger explosion, 9-11... all of these events already have people that deny they actually happened. These are also all things that could very easily be created in real time in AI today and televised with a pretty minimal amount of coordination between a few key players. If CNN and Fox News both show footage and run a story of a regime being overthrown in Africa somewhere, are people in America going to actually know that it didn't happen and that it was all made up for views / clicks?

Yes, we are absolutely fucked.

How was it? I used to love going to Google I/O back when they gave attendees super expensive swag, like laptops and phones lol

I'm probably gonna get a shock if I upgrade this century, I still have a rooted and booted 2018 Galaxy S9 w/ Android 10. :messenger_sunglasses:
