Google Launches Summer of Code

"We're very happy to launch the Summer of Code today, and I thought Slashdot readers would be interested and might even help us spread the word (We have a flyer, even). The program is designed to give computer science, and other, students a stipend ($4500) while they learn to release and create open source software. We're working with a variety of Open Source software foundations and organizations and we hope to sign up around 200 developers. We hope the end result will be more open source developers! I'll be pleased to answer questions in the comment stream about this program. Thanks!"

Google Releases Earth to Beta

"Google has released a beta of it's Google Earth software to subscribers of the existing Keyhole service. New features include 3D models of buildings in selected cities, input from your gps receiver and a better search system. I have posted screenshots here and here. This product is in competition with Microsoft's Virtual Earth"

This sounds really cool. I'm not a coder though. So its not like i can learn from the experiance. But still this is cool beans for the rest of you folks that do that.

Wow, Google Earth is amazing looking. Is this going to be free or subscription when it's released? Or will it be in Beta hell forever like Gmail.

wasnt keyhole owned by the government at one point or another? Cause i remember going to somesite owned by the government that wanted me to sign up to it.

Google Earth seems like a cool idea. One day i wont ever have to go on trips i'll just go to Google World.
