But still no MMS...

I won't downplay it:

When someone from an unsupported carrier (basically only Verizon now) sends you an MMS not only does the other person not know you didn't get it but you receive no notification that they attempted to send you something. It's a huge flaw, but I think one that can be easily mediated.

Google Voice has been awesome for me in general, I bought one of those Obihai VoIP boxes so I have a "landline" in addition to now being able to make voice calls with data on my cell phone. The only problem I have with it is that I can only get an out-of-state number (they have never offered phone numbers in my area code :(, the number I have was a local number when I first set it up, before I moved)

I actually just thought up this $10 solution: get a t-mobile pay-as-you-go sim card, activate it (obtaining a new number), and then immediately port it out to google voice.

Carphone Warehouse comparison with the Note 4 makes me very interested; I thought it'd be quite a bit bigger but that looks fine.

Going up from a Note 2 and the difficulty of getting a Note 4 at a competitive price due to availability issues is making the Nexus look appealing. That and the worst thing on a Samsung is the pre-installed software.

I'd been looking at the Moto previously as well but it was too small so this looks pretty good.

I'd be interested in the Nexus 9 but there are a couple of things I'm just not impressed by. I've got used to wireless charging with the Nexus 7, and having to plug it in again, with a crappy micro-usb lead, just seems like a retrograde step. Also, would it have killed them to have increased the storage capacity? Google haven't increased the storage capacity of their tablets at all since their first in 2012.

Offering a 16GB model is a joke, probably 11GB usable.

Their stance on SD cards is a major turnoff for me. For a media consumption device I don't care if apps work from SD card. I want movies, music, books, comics on the SD card. I can't imagine a tablet with less than 30 usable GB being all that useful as a primary tablet.

So if we order Wednesday when are we supposed to get the phones? Next week? Also just to verify, I'm not going to have to get up at like 2AM to order this will I?

1. No one knows.

2. Unlikely, this is not an iPhone launch. But it probably doesn't hurt if you really really want it (like I do).

Ditto. I pretty much only use my 16GB Nexus 7 for web browsing and a few apps due to limited storage. When I replace it I would like something with much greater capacity. Google's publicly stated stance on SD cards seems to treat users as idiots, but even if there are underlying technical problems on that front, it seems moronic that they still won't release a tablet with more than 32GB of storage. Isn't relatively fast Flash memory pretty cheap these days?

No idea what Google is thinking.

The main advantage of the Nexus line (especially the last couple of years) has been price. The Nexus 4 was a great value at $299/$349. The Nexus 5 was very good value at $349/$399. At that price you can maybe overlook that there is no memory expansion slot (I mean, I couldn't but I'm sure a lot of folks could've).

The Nexus 6 is fucking $649. That's absolutely insane considering there is no micro SD slot. It's also fucking huge. No idea why anyone would get this over something like the Note 4.

It sucks that, if you want cutting-edge tech, there are no options for smaller sizes. It's go big or go mid-end specs.

I've had every Nexus phone, and I never had this problem. It seems you were just unlucky.

The Z3 Mini is probably going to be your best bet for an up to date phone in a small form factor. Just sucks that nobody in the US is offering it, and have to buy it from overseas.

Same reason why people choose Nexus 5 over all other similar sized phones? Also, the Note 4 is $200 more than the Nex 6...

Stock Android, cheaper, better looking hardware, faster updates. That's why I am getting it. I also like big phones though.

I don't understand how 32GB isn't the minimum model at this point. ASUS' Transformer tablets were doing that a couple of years ago. After a point it's discouraging people from buying and downloading digital media.

Uh, it's using top of the line specs like QHD display, 3 gigs ram and Snapdragon 805, and still coming in 200 bucks less off-contract compared to something like the Note 4. What's so hard to understand?

Google can't keep undercutting its own licensees like Samsung and Sony by releasing the same kind of phones for way way cheaper. No doubt they got that feedback last year.

This time, the Nexus is competing with high end phones and not mid range phones. The Moto X seems to be the Nexus 5 replacement.

My reasons to get Nexus 6 over iPhone 6+/Note 4 are always-listening Google Now, quick Android updates, lack of bloatware and a $200 lower price.

This. That's all there is to it. In my case, I want a flagship phone that will receive Android updates fast. I like the new focus Google is showing on looks and functionality.
I just hope this phone better fit in my pocket

I have the iPhone 6 Plus now (didn't think the Nexus would show up on Verizon) and it's about the same size and it fits in every pocket I have just fine. I even have a case on it.

The Note 4 is spec'd pretty much the same but is $200 more. No stock android. The nexus 6 is def worth it.

$100 more. It's $750 outright at T-Mobile.

And it has a shit ton more features. SD card slot, removable battery, much better multitasking, S-Pen, likely a better camera, and if the 2014 Moto X is any indication (which used the older Galaxy S4 panel) then the screen will be better too.

The Nexus 6's advantages come down to quicker updates and front-facing speakers.

Most likely Google/Motorola sourced the screens from Samsung anyway, and since there weren't QHD amoled screen last year the screen should be latest tech. That's what I am hoping for anyway.

It's probably not, since Samsung reserves their latest display technology for their phones and phablets.

Sorry, I should have specified-- from earlier generations of Nexus.

I picked up a Nexus (4? I don't remember), and it overheated and shut down in the first few months. Ordered a replacement... still overheats when I'm running only ONE app. Drains the batteries, too.

Looked it up and saw that it was a model thing.. not sure if they fixed it yet.

I know this reply is posted way too late.

I'm not sure how much the glass back (insulator) was to blame, but the SoC in the Nexus 4 was quite powerful and power hungry. It was well known that it'd throttle at the sight of a demanding task, though on the bright side it works well when I leave it next to an open window in these freezing winter months :P

I ran an app the checks battery temp and had a warning set at 40C, but had to turn it off because it would go off all the time if I browsed GAF while it was charging. While watching a HD movie it stayed around 45C (on a plane so not a hot environment, but the thin air might have impacted cooling) which makes me wonder how close the chip was to melting :P

Hot batteries will wear themselves out quicker which is why it bothers me, but thankfully replacing the battery in a Nexus 4 shouldn't be that hard if you have the right screw driver. If you need good battery life the S400 devices like the Moto G would be a much better choice, but for a low cost the Nexus 4 is fast and really good looking.

I won't downplay it:

That is NOT true. If verizon tries to send you a MMS, they will receive an error saying the message was unable to go through. The VZW users will KNOW something is wrong and as it notifies them of it's inability to send.

Is this a recent development (as in this rolled out with the latest push to support MMS with the carriers)? I've been a Google Voice user for over 3 years now and I've had people try to send me MMS with no sign of failure anywhere.

I haven't had a Verizon user send me a picture since that update though.

Google Voice user for 4 years here :p It used to not tell anyone, you're right about that... with the new Hangouts merge it now will actually NOT send MMS out if a VZW user sends it to you. The VZW user will literally just keep getting a failed message sent for MMS sent to GV now, I've tested it with a few VZW people on iPhones.

Fantastic. There goes the last caveat to telling people to switch. Thanks for setting me straight!

Still wish Verzion would have played ball and supported sending MMS like everyone else, but this is good enough.

In case anyone is interested, this was brought up in the Android OT by XBP: T-Mobile is offering the Nexus 6 for $0 upfront with financing.
http://newsroom.t-mobile.com/news/t-mobile-to-bring-nexus-6-to-its-data-strong-network-this-november.htm

In case people missed it, at the bottom it says;
Device Pricing for Well-Qualified Customer: $0 down + $27.08/month x 24/mos. If you cancel wireless service remaining balance on phone becomes due. Total price $649.92. 0% APR; O.A.C. Taxes & fees addit'l. See T-Mobile.com for device and offer details.

So it isn't any cheaper to buy it off the play store. It'll be interesting to see what the other carriers price it as. Is T-Mobile just being awesome or is google subsidizing the cost?

Right, but it normally comes out to being more expensive than buying it off contract. The nexus 5 for example is currently $70 more from T-Mobile than from the play store.

Um that has nothing to do with buying it full price or having it financed. All the Nexus devices are more expensive at carrier stores. If you bought a GS5 at T-Mobile full price it would be the same price as if you would have bought it financed.
