Google offering, uh, even more gmail space?

someone mind telling me why anyone in their right mind would need 2 GB of storage for EMAIL? o_O

It's free. Why would you complain? I'm at 25% now (or at least I was at 1GB).

G is for growth
Storage is an important part of email, but that doesn't mean you should have to worry about it. To celebrate our one-year birthday, we're giving everyone one more gigabyte. But why stop the party there? Our plan is to continue growing your storage beyond 2GBs by giving you more space as we are able. We know that email will only become more important in people's lives, and we want Gmail to keep up with our users and their needs. From Gmail, you can expect more.

...

Yeah starting a thread is all right, but going on for 2 pages, and all you guys do is watch the fucking counter go up? :lol

Maybe if you read the gmail site a bit... *SIGH*

where the hell did some new storage technology come out?

I could not believe 1gig but now 2 and beyond

I 99% of the users will never touch 5% of the storage but imagine if they did.

I don't mean to alarm you but you have dogs on your face
Anyone else think they're only offering this amount of space on paper, and they don't even have near the amount of storage space it would take to fill up everyone's gmail account? I bet they're just doing this to be able to say they offer more space than their competitors. Considering file size limit is 10mb, I couldn't possibly imagine ever filling up 1gb, let alone much more than that.

demon, that is most definitely what they are doing. I am sure they have a sizable amount of space, but if everyone decided to fill up their 2 GB overnight I doubt they could do it. Google counts on the fact that most users will never even use 25% of the 2GB in all the time they use Gmail.

Then again, if i'm totally wrong I really want to see some pictures of all the hard drives Google has for Gmail.

whoa I have 1663 MB. @_@

I just sign up for gmail minutes ago and gotta a question: Does your account get cancelled or something if you don't log in for a long period of time (like 3 months)?

edit: btw is it possible to change my name?

Doesn't get cancelled ever. I you want to get rid of it you go under preferences and go to the delete account section.

I like the way the counter just keeps ticking up, it's at 2065 and counting now.

But why is it counting up like this? I mean, when you add more HDD's it just becomes available. Me thinks some kind of crazy statistical equation is in use to figure out what percentage of people use how much space etc....

The counting is an april fools joke. There's no good reason for it.

And they don't add hard drives when they count up your space or even when you get an account. Here's how this sort of thing really works (for all the webmail providers and also for ISPs and their bandwidth): They have enough space for their current ACTUAL USE plus some leeway for growth. They have a minimum leeway, and whenever they hit that minimum, they add new storage to the cluster. This gives the illusion that they have enough storage, but really they're just growing it along with you.

In other words, the number they give you as your limit is largely meaningless to them. It's just a way of rate limiting abusive accounts, and the only way it could be bad for them is if they had no limit at all.

It looks like with the forum resurrection my post here vanished, but by watching the counter I estimated it at increasing something like .0025 megabytes per minute, which seems not too inaccurate by what it's reached in the last few days. For comparison, adding 1 gigabyte in 1 year would average to about 0.00195 megabytes per minute, so if this increase holds up the jump from 2005-2006 will be bigger than 2004-2005.

Just because something doesn't have a good reason doesn't mean it's just a joke. Of course they don't really have enough space to hold that much for everyone, and of course they're not really constantly adding space at that rate. But as a marketing thing I think it's pretty cool for them to say that they're constantly increasing the amount of space you could potentially use, and then back that up by truly having the limit increase effectively several megabytes each day.

I'm not saying the new limits are a joke, just that the way they're increasing it is. They're really upping it, just like they were really implementing gmail a year ago, but even marketing wise it's not really useful to do it this way. They're being silly, which is not at all unusual for google, or a bad thing.

One thing in my post had nothing to do with the other. There are people here who clearly don't understand the way that business model works, so I explained it.

I'm still surprised at how foolish some of you guys are :lol

Don't you get the fucking point? That counter is just there for kicks. The thing is (as previously noted) the majority of Gmail users will never fill up their +2GB. They could say 10GB, or whatever, it's all the same.

The counter is just going up to make idiots like you guys actually ponder how Gmail is capable of so much storage.

Guess what, it doesn't exist! That counter is just some script or whatever, and that's it. All that's happening is your limit goes up. Google isn't importing HDs by the boatload or anything.

*sigh*

This is by far the saddest thread I've read on GAF.

but even marketing wise it's not really useful to do it this way.

I disagree. To the layman, you have Hotmail with 250MB, Yahoo with 1GB, and Google with a constantly rising amount of storage. It's a great way to differentiate themselves in a positive way.
