Google pays Apple $15 BILLION a year to make Google the default iOS search and to prevent MS from making Bing it

Totally worth it for google, and if they ever stop paying Apple has 3 other companies lined up to pay to be it.

I’m honestly surprised Apple hasn’t tried entering the search engine space… but with that number it sounds like they are being paid not to.

I wonder how much they lost from google when they made Apple Maps the default map app?

I wonder if they regret that decision. Even on my iPhone, I find myself still using google maps, even though apple maps is clearly much better than it used to be.

I'm just not sure, from a business perspective, what they were thinking. It is not like Apple makes money on a search as you said, and a huge part of google maps' business appeal is how great it is integrating the entire google ecosystem.

this is why you tax corporations. if they were getting taxed properly, they wouldnt be wasting it on dumb shit like this.

I once read an article that showed how Samsung spends $10 billion in marketing every year. For example, Sony's entire profits this year were $12 billion.

For someone that was around back in the DOJ war on MS/IE I find this funny as shit. Apple deserves Google, it's a match made in corporate asshole valhalla.

If you read the text it says this an effective commission rate of 30%, which means that Google makes $50 billion revenue from being the default search. The numbers are pretty staggering.

Shit. I knew they paid a lot for it but I wouldn't have guessed anything close to that. I guess they have so much money lying around that it's burning a hole in their pocket.

Edit: Going by what Withnail says about it makes sense. Shows what I know about this stuff.

Yep, this is a no brainer for Google. Why not spend 15 billion if you can make 50 billion?

Silicon Valley is a shit hole. MS, Google, Apple, all run by scum.
Takes like this just crack me up.

Do you know how business works? These companies provide jobs in multiple countries and have accelerated humanity's technological reach by vast amounts.

Any "big corp" is gonna have shitheads in it, just like the government. Doesn't mean they are all "scum".

this is the most simple business deal I've ever seen.

"Run by scum"

The fuck is wrong with you people?

Some people hate success.

Fuck me, how much is my data really worth. I wish we had representatives in congress with the balls to actually force these shit companies to pay us for our data and pay what it's worth.

Think percentage wise, Samsung is about 5% of revenue and Sony is about 3%. The key factor is that Samsung makes like 3x the revenue of Sony.

I am not sure how this number looks like the rest of the big companies

I do wonder if the Internet and some of the services that we have gotten used to works with a primarily paid service. All of the major email services are obviously ad-financed. Would I pay for NeoGAF?

Think there are a couple of things that need to be done in the ad-tech space mainly the breaking up of youtube and Google.

If I could profit directly from my data and choose which data ad companies have access to I would pay for every website I use and would still probably end up with some extra money at the end of the day.

It's not necessarily even that.

Let's say Google makes $100 off me a month and to upkeep the services I use it's $10. That's $90 profit. Fuck you, give me $40.

I need to have a look into their margins, this shit gets alot more complex in the display advertising space. In search, it might be easier to do something like this.

The incredible thing is that in many cases people are making bank for trivial activities. I've heard in silicon valley some of the top employees took sick leave and simply stopped coming or working and they still got their big fat pay check while staying home and not even working remotely, or there was an article about that. There are people who do barely anything yet somehow or another are being paid big bucks.

At the same time even very low positions pay significantly more if you're in a big city, like you can make more than most even being a garbage pickup guy than working in a typical middle tier position outside the city(in NY there are 6 figure garbage pickup workers, and in California when benefits are taken in to account human feces pickup pays nearly $200K).
