Google plans to bring ads to refrigerators, car dashboards, thermostats, glasses" &c

Advertising may be coming to your thermostat and lots of other strange places, courtesy of Google.

In a December letter to the Securities and Exchange Commission, which was disclosed Tuesday, the search giant said that it could be serving ads and other content on “refrigerators, car dashboards, thermostats, glasses, and watches, to name just a few possibilities.”

Google made the statement to help justify why it shouldn’t disclose revenue generated from mobile devices, a figure the SEC had requested and that companies like FacebookFB +3.28% and TwitterTWTR -0.22% both disclose. Google argued that it doesn’t make sense to break out mobile revenue since the definition of mobile will “continue to evolve” as more “smart” devices roll out.

“Our expectation is that users will be using our services and viewing our ads on an increasingly wide diversity of devices in the future,” the company said in the filing.

Google since updated that they "never" have plans to bring ads to Nest, if you can believe that.

I don't think I would purchase strange devices with ads. Who wants to look down at your watch and see an ad for another watch. Madness.

could be interesting if it's tied to price. I could see something like:
Refridgerator $799,
Refridgerator enhanced with Google $399

Refrigerators that see I'm an alcoholic and recommend some IPAs that I might like? One button to order? Delivered to my doorstep?

I'm okay with this.

Oh man, fridge with ads? Sounds like the most American thing ever done.

"Our sensors noticed you were running low on pizza and pop, here's a coupon to your preferred grocery store to buy more (or we can order it for you from Amazon's grocery store ahead of your monthly shipping schedule)."

Oh goody. "Before you check the time on your Google Watch, please watch this 30 second ad. Buy our products!"

That sounds awesome! And knowing Google, the fridge would probably be free too!

Two cannibals are eating a clown. One turns to the other and says "does something taste funny to you?"
So basically everything will be as annoying as the gas station.

Google is quickly becoming the advertising company from hell. Now they'll harass you for more juicy data when you're going into the fridge, when you're driving, and when you're living. Pretty soon Google's gonna want to know my sex history.

I can't wait to only have access to my food until after I take thirty seconds to view an ad tailored to my personality and interests.

Yeah, integrated with food delivery would be nice. It would also be nice to have some stats on food content, cost and calories automatically done for you.

Gonna have to combine Horders and mega obese reality shows into one show now tho.

If the fridge is subsidized I'll bite. I'm sure with a few work arounds I can stop the adds from displaying :).

There's people who want that kind of future.

I find it stupid, personally. I'd rather not have a corporation sending me ads because I'm running low on TP. That kind of automation isn't in my best interest, it's in the corp's.

Any device with a web browser is a potential host for Google Ads.

Google already makes money from displaying ads from refrigerators, as long as at least one person has used them to surf a google ad based site.

Fuck the future. This is the kind of shit that makes me hate capitalism. But I don't want to. It's a wonderful concept and basis for our society, but Jesus fucking Christ do some companies abuse the living hell out of it.

I would love Refrigerator ads. If they could scan what was in your fridge, and then tell you things you'd like based on what you eat.

Or if you're low on something like milk or OJ or eggs they could tell what supermarket had that stuff on sale.

You won't be saying that when you find yourself sitting on the toilet with no TP.

Just wait till everyone is using Google Glasses, and the ads will automatically overlay onto the appropriate product. Look at your fridge and food/repair/drink ads will hover on front of it.

I would buy a cheap ass top end fridge if it ran a little ad on the screen while I filled my cup with water or ice.
