You have to be using google wifi?
I figured it was an extra security layer

Maybe because you're not using it at a Google site. Their FAQ says it may not work at non-Google access points.

WPA should be fine for whatever you use it for. Yeah, it can be cracked - in some cases easier than WEP - but that's what you get for using consumer-grade encryption.
