Google should buy Sony

It is becoming more and more clear that Sony are not able to turn themselves around and with Sir Howard not able to fix their synergy problems it is time for a new approach. I think Google would be a great owner for Sony and a way for Google to push their products onto the market with the backing of Sony's huge media divisions, SCE, SPE and SME.

Google needs to figure out WTF it's doing with Motorola Mobility before it just up and acquires yet another major company.

Sony is too unwieldy and needs to be broken up into more nimble entities, more of what they do has to be done where the innovation is ie in the US and Europe.

Moto will be shut down and it's patents absorbed into the parent.

They're too big to acquire. I also can't imagine a Japanese company selling itself to an American company. There's too much pride tied up in the company.

They are going to fire ~19,000 employees just to get some patents? If that was the case, why wouldn't they just buy the patents?

I read the title too quick, and was confused as shit for a few seconds.

I should make clear that there is no intention or rumours floating around about Google buying Sony. It's just an idea that I thought of.

Some will be taken on. I have no idea what 19,000 people do at Moto though. Considering Sony Ericsson is about the same size in terms of market share and they have about 8,000 employees doing the same job.

Moto without patents isn't really a company so the deal presented to Google was the whole company or nothing.

Eh? I think he's definitely got the ball rolling with them. The music, and film division have a platform agnostic service (Music and Video Unlimited) that can be used on a variety of Sony devices, with the video game division to follow next year via PlayStation Suite. He folded all of the electronics divisions with networked services (tablets, video games, TVs, laptops) together so they could all talk with one another, and lastly he brought Sony Ericsson internally.

His tenure wasn't the greatest for Sony, but I think he's done what he hoped to achieve. It's now up to Kaz to utilize what he's done.

you do realize that there is a little more going on at Moto Mobility?

Music and Video unlimited are fine, but Sony have missed the boat with video streaming on an actually unlimited basis. They need to start rolling out monthly subscription packages for unlimited viewing of TV shows and Movies. They can swing premium shows and movies behind their service and pitch it on a price basis against Netflix and watch the subscribers roll in and with it content deals.

Music Unlimited is good though, it just needs a much bigger push and to be compatible with every single Sony device going forwards and with non-Sony devices that don't run Android. So pushing it onto other brands is of paramount importance.

PS Suite is looking great and that is one of the reasons I think Google would be a great fit for Sony. They can push PlayStation harder and further than Sony can and it would be great for Google to have an actual gaming infrastructure for their burgeoning OS division. They could get PS Suite to run on ChromeOS devices as well.

Sir Howard did a decent job because he is a good CEO, but he could never get that last 10% to make Sony click and work as one unit. Kaz might be able to achieve it, but it could be too late by then and Samsung may have entered other markets where Sony dominate.

While a lot of Google-fans may see them as the white knight riding in to save/buy their favorite companies, it also has to be the right fit and make sense. Google buying Sony doesn't make any sense at all really. Buying Moto made sense on certain levels, even if it did feel reactionary, and going after Hulu made sense for Google's long term goals in the living room.

If sony needs to have more synergy and vision why would a company like google who has very little synergy and vision buy sony?

Plus I thought the current sony plan was for Stringer to play it safe for the next year or so and hopefully get the company through the current market then have Kaz take over when the market is better and make Kaz look like he fixed the company?

So what you're saying is that Stringer got the ball rolling, and its up to Kaz to grow the fruit of that labour. Which is similar to what I said.;)

Music Unlimited, and Video Unlimited likely are going to be on every Sony device that can connect to the internet. IIRC it's built in to a large variety of their PCs, tablets, phones, and some of their MP3/MP4 players. Sony's keeping them exclusive now likely as an incentive for people to purchase their hardware, just as PlayStation Certified devices have only been revealed to be from Sony. But obviously to make that a real incentive, they have to showcase to people that these services exist.

That's the problem. Sony aren't seeing the big picture, for services like the ones proposed they need as wide a net as possible because other services will just come in and take over if they don't start supporting third party hardware.

I really want to see the first non-Sony PS Certified device because it needs to be on all future Android devices if they are going to make it work. Being stuck in 10-12m Sony branded phones and tablets a year isn't enough to take the fight to Apple and Nintendo. Being on 50m Android phones with HTC and Samsung on board they can push for a big win against Apple and take over the Android gaming marketplace.

Except Sony has always been based on innovation, and while Stringer has done a lot to get the different divisions to collaborate more, said collaboration has not been that big.

I like Stringer, but just isnt the best match for Sony, at least not as the CEO. He is no visionary like Ibuka or Ohga...and unfortunately neither is Kaz

Nothing will make OEM Android partners happier than Google buying another, even larger hardware company. Lol.

Google could but they'd be buying an elephant competing in markets that require Cheetahs.

I can see Sony spinning off divisions that Google may want.

Why would anyone want to buy that lumbering dinosaur known as Sony? Google (as well as any other company) wouldn't know what to do with that mess.

That's how many people it takes to put individual keys on the droids.

It's one of the main reasons companies are opting out of hardware keyboards and moving on to slates. There's too much overhead between employees, space, and special loupes to place the tiny springs under the keys.

I thought google picked up moto for the patents and is set-top box making abilities for when they enter the IPTV market?

Nobody has a clue why they bought them, other than patents, which in retrospect aren't going to solve Google's problems. It's all conjecture at this point.

please no. google's issue is that even if their functionality rules, their history in UI sucks and they have no aesthetic sense beyond the code itself. They know nothing about hardware let alone making hardware look and work good. and they would essentially ruin the Playstation brand beyond repair. Also they don't take risks like Sony
