Android in smoke detectors!

Bloomberg TV ‏@BloombergTV:
BREAKING: Google to acquire Nest Labs for $3.2 billion in cash

Google has just purchased Nest Labs, the maker of the Nest Learning Thermostat for $3.2 billion in cash.

Google CEO Larry Page said the following in a statement:

Nest’s founders, Tony Fadell and Matt Rogers, have built a tremendous team that we are excited to welcome into the Google family. They’re already delivering amazing products you can buy right now--thermostats that save energy and smoke/CO alarms that can help keep your family safe. We are excited to bring great experiences to more homes in more countries and fulfill their dreams!

Google Glass.
Google Cars.
Android Phones, Tablets, TVs, and Fridges.

Google Home on the way, clearly.

I, for one, welcome our Google overlords.

Goddamn, I didn't think Nest would be worth that much (despite them having super interesting products). Congrats to Fadell and Rogers!

As much as I love their products, there is no way I am spending $120 for a smoke detector...

Now that they are under Google, maybe the prices will drop..

Oh and I assume that I will no longer be able to purchase these items at the Apple store, and like others said, I assume their iOS apps will suck now.

Thanks Google, you just saved me some money!

Googles been on fire recently with all the acquisitions. Smoke detectors seem like the logical evolution.

I don't get this, the Google app suite is great on iOS.

I like Nest but $3.2 Billion for them? Jeez. They must have something really good on the drawing board. And I'm not talking about the smoke alarm thing.

Why would Google acquire a company that makes smoke detectors ? What would they benefit from it ?

i think of it as google investing in their future businesses. google has had self-driving cars for a while and those aren't expected to be available for consumers for at least another decade or two, right? there's definitely a trend towards smart homes, so maybe google foresees this stuff being a much bigger deal in the future.

Generally most apps are built on the iOS platform and then a lot of these companies just make it work for Google... and vice versa with the Google store, and so now that Nest is owned by Google, they will no longer build the app off the iOS platform and port to Google, but vice versa.

It's a smoke detector that monitors your house. It knows when there's people home, the temperature, things like that.

I'm pretty sure it would benefit Google greatly to get data on households.

Imagine, Google Now on your phone will know that you are on the way home from work and will set the temperature to the appropriate temp for you so that your house will be warm (or cold) when you arrive home.

This could potentially save you hundreds of dollars every year. Plus would be super convenient.

Lots of integration, lots of awareness/data. I welcome this future, frankly.

Gotta hand it, Google had some insane ambition. which is why you can't help but love em.

My body is ready for Google House.

Nice!!

Big moves from Google lately.
Larry Page is a mad scientist.

Google's main problem is a complete lack of focus. This doesn't instill confidence, they're becoming Samsung.

GAF is a really funny place sometimes. Lack of focus? People have been complaining that the new Google, the one under Larry Page, is cutting services left and right.
If anything, Google currently is very focused. From Robots, to Self Driving cars, to now smart home appliances.

Automation, selfware, intent is where Google is going.
Google has already all this data on your habits, when you leave to got to work, where, what time you come back, have you walked at all this month. You, their user, should be able to use this data to make your life easier. Sure, they sell ad space based on it, but you should get something in return.

I love where Google is going.

Hope they drop the price on the nest products now. Will share my data for cheap gadgets

I want the smoke detector, but it's hard to justify $130 on an alarm that lacks basic features found in $30 competitors (eg combination of photoelectric and ionization sensors)

I never got the Nest because my thermostat is not in a good location for it, but this would be solved if I had remote sensors -- which the smoke detectors do, but then again you're paying $130 for a mediocre alarm (that is only good for 7 years)

When companies acquire other companies it's not just for the products but for the talent. Patents also help.

Smart pick up for Google.
