So the Google robots will know where you are hiding by checking the temperature of the environment?

They are going to freeze us out. That's how humanity ends. Especially out here in California. All it would take is 50 degrees for us to surrender to the robot overlords.

very impressive for the nest team . I like my nest, it isn't perfect due to the location of the thermostat and my house, but it is very cool to remote turn on the heat or cool and to monitor everything. been thinking about one of the smoke detectors. I could see the next step being an alarm/video monitoring system. Products that already exist in various forms, but integrating them into a unified system under the google name.

It's a cool product, but unless they have something else in the pipeline that is WOW AMAZING WOW, then this is a ridiculous valuation. $3.2b, seriously? Even if you consider the talent they're bringing in, this is absurd.

Seeing as Google was one of Nest's early investors, this pickup makes sense since Google is rumored to have been doing something along these lines anyway. Sweet pickup imo

Damn how is this company worth over 3 billion? Their stuff is pretty cool and got some hype but I don't remember their products selling absolute gangbusters. They must have some patents or tech in the wings that google really wants.

Yes, good. Just installed my Nest thermostat yesterday and I'm in love with it from function to aesthetics. Now, quit pussyfooting around and let me replace everything in my house with these sleek bastards. I want shiny black disks with beautiful interfaces on everything. Home security, lighting, locks, whatever. Let me open up the app and run my house from one screen.

The absolutely ridiculous valuation leads me to believe that they are close to getting there.

I actually didn't see this coming at all. If anything, I thought maybe Apple would snatch them up :P

And smoke detectors isn't the only thing Nest makes, their claim to fame is the Nest thermostat. I have one and it's actually a great little device and a million times more user friendly than my old thermostat.

As much as I love their products, there is no way I am spending $120 for a smoke detector...

Now that they are under Google, maybe the prices will drop..

Oh and I assume that I will no longer be able to purchase these items at the Apple store, and like others said, I assume their iOS apps will suck now.

Thanks Google, you just saved me some money!

Google's ios apps are top notch. wtf are you talking about

Generally most apps are built on the iOS platform and then a lot of these companies just make it work for Google... and vice versa with the Google store, and so now that Nest is owned by Google, they will no longer build the app off the iOS platform and port to Google, but vice versa.

As expected, you don't seem to know what you're talking about.

Breaking news Nest was worth 3.2 billion????

In fucking cash? Google be all asian and buying shit with cash for that ten percent discount. Are the Apple people staying?

When companies acquire other companies it's not just for the products but for the talent. Patents also help.

They've got 130 staff and a patent portfolio worth precisely nothing - they've had to buy licenses from patent trolls and are neck deep in litigation with at least two other companies. This is entirely for the brand.

Yeah, they are either desperate for a head start in the market or have made a deal with Fadell to lead some kind of project.

Either way Google is starting to get a way too broad, they'll turn into a giant mess of throwing shit onto the wall soon enough.

Better than apple sitting on piles of cash and doing fuck all with it ;)
sarcastic btw

I still can't believe Apple didn't purchase them long ago, didn't the guy who start this design the iPod?

Apple is very deliberate in deciding which product categories to enter. I don't think they wanted to enter the home thermostat and smoke detector market. They have taken their sweet time producing a TV and/or expanding Apple TV which is a more sensible move.

They're buying everything up. I remember last year downloading Sparrow for Mac and it had the Google logo by it. Dafuq.

Nest Posted a Statement

Nest, Google and you
Today is undoubtedly an exciting day for all of us at Nest, but it’s also meaningful for you, our customers. I’m sure you have questions about what today’s news means for you, the Nest Thermostat, and Nest Protect. While Tony answered many of the broader questions regarding our new partnership with Google, I thought we’d talk product – my favorite!

Before we dig in, I want to acknowledge what I consider the first great Nest partnership. I’m not talking about Google. I’m talking about the one between you and the team here at Nest. Some of you have been with us since day one while others learned about us more recently, maybe while watching The Ellen DeGeneres Show or hitching a ride on the Nest Fire Truck. One thing’s for sure – there’s no way our products would be what they are today without you, so thank you.

We’re looking forward to continuing our great partnership and remain devoted to you above all else. We know you entrust your homes and information to us and are committed to protecting that the same way we’ve always done.

There is a small Q & A there as well addressing the IOS support and more.
