Gorillaz start work on third album

Damon Albarn announces plans for the cartoon band's new album

Sep 20, 2008
Blur's Damon Albarn and animator Jamie Hewlett are set to begin work on a new Gorillaz album.

The pair also revealed that the release may see a new visual look for the animated band.

Damon Albarn stated that there would be no more Gorillaz albums last year, but has now told CBC that he has already begun work on the album.

"We're doing another Gorillaz record," explained the songwriter. "We came back from summer holidays and realized we could do exactly what we wanted to do with Gorillaz. Essentially, Jamie just had to agree to draw the characters again. 'Cause I just do what I do anyway."

"I'm so fucking bored of drawing those characters," added Hewlett. "But then we had a moment where we had a new angle on it."

"We're not entirely certain [what it will be like]; we generally just go with our gut," said Albarn. "I dunno. We are obtuse and quite abstract, really. We play a game but it's not strictly the game. Sometimes it really works and sometimes... Actually, usually it really works."

The forthcoming third album will be the follow-up to 2005's 'Demon Days' and 2001's self-titled album.

Sold.

Wut?

Demon Days is one of the best concept albums of this decade. Each track holds its own.

Well now you know what you should have known then. Don't buy a Gorrilaz album based solely on the single. Practically every song is radically different from the next. :D

There is Gorillaz without Dan?

I thought he did basically everything and then some guy from a now-defunct 90's band did some vocal work.

As long as Hewlett is drawing it, this shit could be produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis for all I fucking care.

(Actually, that'd be pretty fucking amazing.)

No, he only did the original album. He didn't even produce the b-sides and shit. Demon Days was co-proed by Danger Mouse. Anything non-album is just straight up produced by Damon Dash.

....

and nothing against danger mouse. He's stellar. It's just that Dan's style suits that gorillaz flavor alot better.

and yeah I guess it would be cool if Del came back. It aint a requirement for me tho. Especially after that last album. Homeboy was goin through some shit. I'm like let him sit in a corner and work it out.

Sweet. Even though I already knew this. :D

I actually just looked on Wikipedia to see if Gorillaz is working on anything new earlier this morning.

QFT!

I actually liked Demon Days more than their older stuff.

I won't lie. I bought Demon Days because I couldn't fucking get Feel Good Inc. out of my head. My first listen was a big "WTF is going on here?" But a few more listens later, I love pretty much every track on it. It definitely grew on me, and I bet the third will do the same.

WHAT ABOUT BLUR GOD DAMN IT!
Yeah, wasn't a new Blur album "TBA 2008"? I swear, it was.

Anyway, I'll still take some more Gorillaz, too.

...

But, seriously, after finally getting around to listening to most of Blur's discography this year -- I really hope they come back. Great band.

as a whole i'd put the second as the more quality product, but the first one had some timeless shit on it. The second has faded over time for me.

Speaking of which, has anybody heard that song War Child that he did for some charity CD or whatever (i can't find it again for the life of me)? that shit was amazazing. Maybe he should just roll with that for a while lol.

Seriously, what the fuck. :(

Graham posted IIRC earlier this year (or late last year, I forget) on Blur's official message board essentially saying that Damon was the main holdup to the project. The whole 'TBA 2008' declaration about a Blur album came mainly from the fact that everyone but Damon was essentially on board with the idea, but that Damon was too busy.

But hey, I don't blame Damon. He cut his teeth with Blur, now he's able to do more of what he wants with Gorillaz, TGTBTQ, and all of the other projects he's worked on. Still, Blur is/was such an amazing, amazing collective band. Give us more, we want it.

Also, found a couple demos from the album.

Electric Shock

(becomes an actual song at about 2:14 FYI)

Stylo/Binge

Broken

I doubt these are the finished products of the song, so we'll see what happens.
Yeah these demos are ripped from Damon's appearance on BBC Radio 1. Some of them are close to done, and he said he a lot of work left to do on a couple of them. They actually had a debate in the radio room whether or not it was a good idea to broadcast some of them.
