And then the LORD David Bowie saith to his Son, Jonny Depp: 'Go, and spread my image amongst the cosmos. For every living thing is in anguish and only the LIGHT shall give them reprieve.'
i finally picked this one up, and only this one since they jacked the price up from the last set ($25). i felt like this was the safest bet since his videos are more my style.

so has anyone gotten any of the others? how are they? what's the next essential one to get, i'm leaning towards jonathan glazer...

$25 for one disc? ouch. I got the box set of all 4 new ones from Amazon for $58, no tax, and free shipping. I havent had time watch any of it yet save for a few of the Mark Romanek videos. What can I say, but totally awesome. I love this stuff... shit I normally cant stand hiphop/rap but for some reason I love the JayZ 99 problems video and song. :lol
Cant wait to really dig into this set over the weekend.

I got the Mark Romanek disc and I love it. The others that were in this wave don't seem to have quite enough content to merit the price, though.

We just got the set here at work. The Corbijn DVD was the first one I took home. It's an awesome collection, but I'm a bit miffed that the transfer some of the early vids are horrible. Perhaps no good master tapes of Heart Shape Bix exists, but still, its a bit of a mess.

I thorughly enjoyed the first wave of Director's Series releases and picked up the second box set on a fairly expensive whim (measuring around, oh, sixty-five bucks on the Retail Whim Scale). So far, I've made my way through most of the Mark Romanek disc and about half of the Jonathan Glazer disc. I don't have cable and, in almost all cases, have never seen the videos in the set, so most of this was brand new to me. So far, I have yet to find either of these guys as impressive as Chris Cunningham or Michael Gondry. Slick, visually impressive, but so far not nearly as weird or whimsical as I might hope.

Take Romanek for example. The man is technically competant as all hell and his videos look fantastic: cinematography, lighting, set design, you name it. Howver, most of 'em aren't really setting my world on fire, particularly the lame-ass NuMetal videos. That said, there are some fantastic exceptions: "99 Problems" (probably my favorite video on the disc), "Closer" ("Perfect Drug" is amusing, but the Edward Gorey imagery doesn't really translate; meanwhile, "Closer" is suitably menacing), "Devil's Haircut", "Hurt", and "Can't Stop". I've still got 1/3 or so of the disc to go, so I'm sure a couple more favorites will appear. I'm also looking forward to checking out the commentary tracks.

The Glazer disc is the most like Cunningham's from the first set - things are a bit creepier and there are all of eight videos total. That said, I kept wishing Cunningham was directing these instead; I liked the UNKLE video for "Rabbit In Your Headlights", but I kept wanting it to go from mildly disconcerting to really disturbing. I really liked the "Karmacoma" video, however, and even though I'm apparently the last person on earth to have seen the Jamiroquai "Virtual Insanity" video, I was suitably impressed with the visual effect he pulled off.

That said, I'm still enjoying the set quite a bit; even the videos I enjoyed least are interesting in one way or another, and the level of craftsmanship has been nothing less than top-notch. Also, I'm looking forward to checking out the extras, such as the extensive commentary tracks on the Romanek disc. Also, I picked up the set based mostly on the artists appearing on the Corbijn and Sednaoui sets, so I'm positive that the best is yet to come.

The commentary tracks are excellent--Romanek is a smart guy. I recommend all of the tracks for Got 'Til It's Gone (Romanek, Janet Jackson, Joni Mitchell); all of the tracks for Criminal (Romanek, Fiona Apple); all of the tracks for Hurt (Romanek, Trent Reznor); Romanek's track on Are You Gonna Go My Way, and Keith Richards mumbling his way through his commentary for Wicked as it Seems, purely for the amusement value.

ok, i spent hours last night watching the whole corbijn dvd, and i like it a lot. it's no gondry dvd, but i LOVE this guy's concepts and photography style. it was so damn cool to watch the guys from JD/new order talk about the video for atmosphere, that one was a pretty great idea and very simple. heart shaped box sold this one for me, and the video that became my surprise favorite was henry rollins' liar. that's one of the greatest things i've ever seen. the depeche mode vids are excellent too, as is u2's one.

i was a big fan of romanek growing up, but i've kind of come to see him as not that great of an artist. the closer video was amazing, but the rest are just too damn glossy and superficial. seeing the new coldplay video kind of summed that up for me. he's about making a gorgeous video, and that's about it.

does anyone have the sendoui dvd here? that's the one i'm curious about...

ps. i just got sexy beast from netflix (glazer directed). maybe i'll break down and get his dvd if that blows me away.

I got this on a whim (walked in to Virgin, and it was on sale for $59...)...I didn't even know this was out! Way back when, I bought the first three discs separately (then they issued a box set for the first wave...bastards) so I knew these discs would be cool...

So far, I'm most impressed with the Romanek disc although I haven't watched everything yet. I was also pleased to see that there was an Anton Corbijn disc since I've always been a fan of Corbijn's work with Depeche Mode...(it also has Front 242 on it, too bad the videos there are edited into a montage...one regret I have is never picking up the Headhunter CD Video when it came out - anyone remember that format? Half CD single, half laserdisc video, and mostly useless for most people...well, most of the Headhunter video is in the extras at least :)

I think I might bring the discs to work tomorrow so I can listen/watch as I have time :)

I thought I'd bump this up since I just got my hands on the latest four additions to the series. I'm working my way through the Romanek disc, and let me just say that I've fallen in love with the video for Bowie's "Jump, They Say." So cool.

Perhaps the most striking thing for me though, is the redesigned discs themselves. Not only is it absolutely awesome that they've ditched the two-sided format, but the organization of the material is far nicer and easier to navigate. Those issues were my main problems with the first series, and with those solved these are now some of the sweetest additions to my collection. I really dig having these varied volumes of high quality music videos on demand.

I've still gotta get the Chris Cunningham one. Not sure why I've put that off.
