GOTY/Ultimate/Special Editions...anyone changing their buying habits because of them?

Baron Aloha

A Shining Example
There seems to be a rapidly growing trend this generation where companies will release a game and then 1 year later release a version that ships will all of the DLC or some other new features....basically a more 'complete' version of the game.

Some examples:

Elder Scrolls: GOTY Edition
Fallout 3: GOTY Edition
LBP: GOTY Edition
SW The Force Unleashed: Ultimate Sith Edition
Resident Evil 5: Alternate Version
Super Street Fighter IV
Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2
Lost Planet: Colonies

Now this is not something new by any means but is anyone changing their buying habits because of this? I'll be honest, I have. When Fallout 3 came out last year I waited on getting it because I knew from past experience that Bethesda would put out a GOTY edition and sure enough they did. I did end up getting the game before the GOTY edition came out but only because I found it for very cheap shortly after it was released.

With Capcom, I suppose I should have known to expect an update to SFIV but I was a little surprised by RE5. I bought the game but never opened it and now I'm returning it to get the new version.

I'm usually someone who will buy a game the day it comes out unless I suspect I will be able to get a good deal on it later but with this trend seeming to grow and grow I'm going to be much more reluctant to purchase a game on day one or even year one unless I know the game is so obscure that there is no chance of an update. And as much as I love Capcom's games I am probably not going to buy any more of their games until a year after release unless I can find them for $20-$30. With Bethesda I definitely am not going to get any of their games on release as they always put out a GOTY edition with more features.

I'm curious as to what you all think about this. As a gamer I want to support the companies/games that I like but as a consumer I always want to make sure I get the best bang for the buck and not feel cheated. Do you think gaming companies are starting to get out of hand with this trend? Will it get more and more difficult to convince people to buy a game on release if people start to expect that a superior version will be announced in 6-12 months time?

Never cared for DLC, expansions and whatever. If it's on the disc, I'll play it otherwise no go. So no, It doesn't change my buying habits at all.

Yep Im waiting for

Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 (with DLC characters included)
it helps that I am not really in a rush to play that game (just an average looking game for me)

Well, one of the only experiences I've had with this is when I bought Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3 used 1.5 years ago.

I didn't see MGS3 Subsistence in the store so I got Snake Eater, and I didn't know MGS2 had Substince so I got regular MGS2 (forgot its name... something Liberty I think) and so while I was happy I picked them both up for cheap, I later became unhappy that I missed out on the special version for both instead of just one.

Learning from that experience, if I were to get a PS3, I won't get MGS4 right off the bat. I'll wait a little to see if anything's announced...

Oh... Another example is Pokemon. With every generation, there's always a third game that is better. I remember when Diamond/Pearl came out... I felt kinda bad getting Pearl and not waiting for the third game (Platinum), but when it was released, it actually made some nice improvements over Diamond/Pearl, and differentiated itself from the other two in a couple ways. Next Pokemon generation, I might get one of the first two AND the third game.

Other than that... I don't often buy games when they're released.

Yeah, kinda. I'm not buying any of the Fallout 3 DLC because I know there will be a GoTY disc down the road.

I bought NFS: Shift the other day. I had no idea there was a CE, I saw the CE at the weekend and noticed it gives you an exclusive 'Elite' tier to race. That pisses me off.

These faux special editions are a rubbish trend and I hope they go the way of the dodo soon. Include a shitty statue or something by all means but exclusive game content by platform / SE DLC or Pre-order is just crap.

At first I thought you were referring to collector's editions of games, but this makes more sense.

The answer to this thread for me is no...I'm too impatient for that shit.

I usually wait before I can get games cheaper anyways, so if an all-in-one-dlc packge is announced I'll just wait for that and pick it up instead.
So far I'm awaiting; Force unleashed and perhaps RE5. Oh and Sigma 2, but that's mainly because I don't have a 360 and this is what's available.

Normally I don't double dip but I am considering doing so for two games.

I'm trying to decide whether it's worth it, from a value standpoint, to trade in my copy of Fallout 3 and pick up the GOTY Edition. I know that I want Broken Steel and Point Look Out, and I'm debating whether or not Mothership Zeta and The Pitt are worth my money. If I can get a decent trade in credit at Gamestop, I think I'll be double dipping.

I imported Demon's Souls and, while I really like the game, it's fallen onto my back burner and I haven't really played much after beating wordl 1-1. As the versions are pretty much identical, I'd only be buying the game again for the SE Strategy Guide and to play on US Servers. I'd do this in a second if I had a good way of getting rid of my import copy. There's no way that Gamestop will take it and I doubt I could get a decent value for it on Craigslist with the US version around the corner.

I only ever buy PC games at launch, and normally wait for a small sale to push me over into buying console games.

But the only time where I felt a little jipped this gen was when I bought MP: Trilogy having only played a few hours of Corruption (which I bought day 1, sadly.) But hey, I got 20$ for Corruption, and Trilogy is 50, so...in a sense, it's all good.

it's funny that this thread pops up now, my buddy and I were just talking about this the other day. We've noticed that when we pre-order games on amazon, even though we might be getting the pre-order bonuses or $10 off promotions it still seems silly; if you don't play the game due to backlog and a GoTY edition or Special edition comes out and makes it so your sometimes still sealed game is all but worthless on the resell market. This happened recently for him. He pre-ordered Fallout 3 on amazon.com and hadn't played it yet because he knew it was an immersive game and wanted to get into it when he had more free time. Now the collection with all the downloadable content is available making his copy and pre-order mean nothing.

With PC RPGs or strategies that are likely to get add-ons, I always wait for the edition that has all of them in one package. It makes the wait so worth it.

I am not very keen on buying Game of the Year Edition and such but I really love get special edition of games when I find the contents to be mouthwatering

For example
I'll get Special/Collector Editions of

Unchartered 2
Assassin's Creed II
God of War III

and God knows what else

I waited for Fallout 3 GOTY and boy, it was worth it :lol
Never buy a Bethesda game at launch.

This is what i've done. I held off buying all the DLC due to bugs/lack of money etc, and now i'm getting it all at once. :)

Haven't changed my habits no. If a game is so good that I want to purchase it then I probably couldn't handle waiting a year. Especially for some of the games you listed like RE5 and Fallout 3.

Have never paid for DLC for a game ever. Have never bought a limited/collectors edition of a game ever. Have never bought GOTY version of a game I already owned.

I've always waited for price drops on non-Nintendo games (because lol @ Nintendo price dropping their games). So no, my habits haven't really changed.

If it's a game I have to play day one (Fallout 3), I buy it, finish it and then sell it off. Then I use the credit to buy the GOTY version later. If it's a game I don't have to have day one, I just wait (SWTFU: Sith Edition, LPB GOTY). Usually the GOTY editions are cheaper and come with the DLC, so it's actually cheaper to do it this way than to buy the DLC as it comes out.

Waiting on Fallout 3 once I hear about all that DLC. Saw another Oblivion coming, and waiting paid off. Depends on whats in it. Waiting for MUA 2 Gold isn't worth it to me, just a couple characters.

CE's really depend on the content, especially if they suddenly make most of the CE exclusive stuff available for all the regular editions too (like Dragon Age)

I'd rather buy the regular edition and get the DLC when it first appears, rather than digest all of the content a year later.

Hell, Fallout 3 was daunting enough by itself. With 5 add-ons from the start? :| It was a nice monthly dose :)

I also ignored Fallout 3 and GTA4 until now. Will definitely get their new releases.

I bought Ninja Gaiden II, but never actually played it yet (at least it was $10). I don't think I'll be rebuying that one. If I never bothered to play it before, what makes me think I'll do it now when I pay 60?

Unless it's a game I'm addicted to, like LBP, once hearing about a GOTY edition coming out I will sell the standard game and then wait to buy the GOTY at a price near what I sold the game for.

Example: Sold Fallout 3 for $35...I'll only spend up to $40 on the GOTY edition.

Yup I waited on Oblivion and Fallout 3. Me getting the GOTY editions.

As regards to LBP: GOTY, I really wanted it for the ModNation Racers beta, but other than that, I have all the DLC.

RE5: Alternate is a strange one, I completed the game and everything, but can the pointer controls be patched? If no, then I'm getting it.

Getting the Sith Edition even though I finished the original game, playing through this one for trophies.

I prefer to customize my game with dlc.
GOTY editions don't make much sense to me - for some games you're almost getting too much content at once. Games like Fallout can be already intimidating in their intitial state - don't know if I would want all the additional content added in there from the start.

Not for CE/special editions/etc, but GOTY editions absolutely. Games that I never really thought about picking up coming out in a GOTY edition does make me think about it again.

Except with Fallout 3, I never picked it up because I thought it would be too much of a timesink, the GOTY edition makes me cringe.

With games like Fallout, GOTY editions with extra content are a freaking GREAT idea. I would gladly pay full price for Fallout 3 if it had even half of the DLC in the package. Will it change my habits? It hasn't, but it probably will.

There is a CE for Uncharted 2? Europe maybe, but NA??

im still waiting for the MGS4 update!!!
and what look at is what company's do a game of the year release!! as this would be a good indication if you should wait or not!

e.g we know that there will be one for modern warfare 2 and fallout 3! so this tells us if Bethesda and Activision has a big hit they will most likely put out a better version a year later, so one could wait..........

I'd like to know this as well. Back to the topic at hand, I rarely, if ever, buy Special Editions these days. I'm going to make an exception for Demon's Souls.
