Baron Aloha
A Shining Example
There seems to be a rapidly growing trend this generation where companies will release a game and then 1 year later release a version that ships will all of the DLC or some other new features....basically a more 'complete' version of the game.
Some examples:
Elder Scrolls: GOTY Edition
Fallout 3: GOTY Edition
LBP: GOTY Edition
SW The Force Unleashed: Ultimate Sith Edition
Resident Evil 5: Alternate Version
Super Street Fighter IV
Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2
Lost Planet: Colonies
Now this is not something new by any means but is anyone changing their buying habits because of this? I'll be honest, I have. When Fallout 3 came out last year I waited on getting it because I knew from past experience that Bethesda would put out a GOTY edition and sure enough they did. I did end up getting the game before the GOTY edition came out but only because I found it for very cheap shortly after it was released.
With Capcom, I suppose I should have known to expect an update to SFIV but I was a little surprised by RE5. I bought the game but never opened it and now I'm returning it to get the new version.
I'm usually someone who will buy a game the day it comes out unless I suspect I will be able to get a good deal on it later but with this trend seeming to grow and grow I'm going to be much more reluctant to purchase a game on day one or even year one unless I know the game is so obscure that there is no chance of an update. And as much as I love Capcom's games I am probably not going to buy any more of their games until a year after release unless I can find them for $20-$30. With Bethesda I definitely am not going to get any of their games on release as they always put out a GOTY edition with more features.
I'm curious as to what you all think about this. As a gamer I want to support the companies/games that I like but as a consumer I always want to make sure I get the best bang for the buck and not feel cheated. Do you think gaming companies are starting to get out of hand with this trend? Will it get more and more difficult to convince people to buy a game on release if people start to expect that a superior version will be announced in 6-12 months time?
