Graphical Fidelity I Expect This Gen

Wait...so assassinating people changes the weather?
It is a barely known japanese quirk but Sucker Punch went above and beyond to make the first game feel authentic.

By the way do you remember how the devs became guests of honor of the real Tsushima island when GOT released to unanimous acclaim ? That was because they made a great game. Well i know from credible sources (for the vg industry) devs of GOY barely managed to become guests of their own families at christmas this year. Go figure...

Well the year was pretty scarce in terms of new games with advanced graphics.
Between this and AC Shadows and a bunch of UE5 projects all of them were rather mediocre graphics wise.
But hey at least all of them are hitting (almost, kinda) 60 on a 10TF console from 2020.
Well in this case better gave it to those Nintendo Switch titles to save all the hassle. And ass shadows do have a port for switch 2 while this early ps4 fashion thing in path tracing coat still ain't bother to do anything about it :p

AC shadows is leagues ahead of Doom though.

I think UE5 needs a filter that makes games look like concept art. I know Jaffe went viral for saying GOW3 looked like a painting but i kinda want to see the painting art style in games. Some games do go for that art style like Kena and South of Midnight, but it would be really cool if some dev just tried to make games look exactly like the concept art their artists drew up.

Ghosts 2 also had great concept art.

Doom is comfortably in the cross gen territory like Death Stranding 2, Ghost of Yotei, Spiderman 2, etc. Even borderlands looks better. Metal Eden looks better. Arc Raiders looks better.

lol come on, that's ridiculous. Death Stranding 2 maybe but the rest? Not a chance. Arc Raiders? Come the fuck on

Show me a single shot from Arc Raiders that looks as good as any of this:

I think both games are incredibly good looking. That being said I think AC is more impressive in the environments and it's an open world which makes it even more commendable.

That being said the problem with Shadows is that no matter how good looking the game is, if you have such stiff physics and bad animations the whole game suffers very much as a result

I think Doom in this situation wins because the graphics and animations all fit together properly which makes it visually cohesive

AC Shadows is amazing but it falls short when you see it in movement which is something that does not happen with Doom

Darktide is a great looking game. Extremely detailed interiors and modeling. Gorgeous baked lighting too with some excellent volumetric effects. Its a shame that the game is coop only or i would've played it more.

Though it had issues on both pc and consoles at launch. I didn't see them though since i had a 3080 and a decent cpu, also played it a year after launch so maybe thats why.

I actually find Darktide extremely underwhelming.

Its funny because I vividly remember playing it on the series X a while back and it looked fantastic.

I'm replaying it now on PS5 Pro and it looks horrid.

Looks low resolution, lots of pop in, blood and gore look dated.

I find Space Marine 2 vastly superior in terms of visuals.

I dont count cutscenes. If i did Death Stranding 2 would be the best looking game of all time. I wish Doom consistently looked as good as those gameplay screenshots you posted. The open world levels and there are plenty do not look anything like that. The first couple of levels do look fairly decent i will give you that. its the death stranding 2 effect, linear levels look better but the rest just dont hold up.

Arc Raiders i havent played so i dont have any screenshots, but i have borderlands and the lighting and asset quality is way way more impressive than Doom's bland open world lighting and asset quality. Arc Raiders looks so much more cohesive despite having its own lighting issues in interiors. But the majority of the game is set in the open world that has a great art style and way better lighting than the bland and drab look of Doom's open world levels.

IQ really matters and i wouldnt be surprised if the PS5 pro version is using PSSR which is destroying all kinds of detail. Hell, even the XSX's performance mode had IQ issues IIRC because they didnt even bother including support for FSR2. Just 1080p upscaled to 4k using the tv upscaler. Played them both on PC at high resolutions, and id say they are both on par with Space Marine 2 edging it out because the scale is so much more impressive.

Try the quality 30 fps version and see if that looks better. PSSR is really good at 1440p internal resolution and really meh at anything below 1080p.

I wouldn't quite put it leagues, Doom has its strengths, but yeah, better.
Just started playing AC again, wanted to see if there are some improvements, still looks amazing.

Insane looking screenshots.

and yep. i also recently went back to finally finish the fucking game, and as much as i hate the campaign, the visuals still blew me away. there was this thick fog that rolled in as i was riding towards the last mission as yasuke, not sure if it was scripted, but this was the first time autumn looked amazing to me. i keep saying this, but its the random mix of seasons, day/night cycle, and weather that makes this game special. its so fucking dynamic.

Screenshots look great, but when you play the game, 60% of the screen is obscured by a god awful UI. Typical Ubisoft stuff.

Borderlands does look nice. I look forward to playing that at some point.

BL4 looks so nice. I wish it released in a better technical state, it would have gotten the praise it deserved for its visuals. Still can't believe how many idiots were saying it was only a marginal improvement over BL3.

ive been turning off UI since around the mid 2010s. Horizon Zero Dawn had this big retarded compass right on top of the screen that was so distracting. i immediately turn it off along with any objective markers in almost every game. I also have the setting to enable the weapon and ability icons dynamically once the combat starts.

Shadows is not as bad and i kept the compass on when i was doing the story missions, i believe you can adjust its opacity so it almost blends in with the enviornment, and it honestly isnt that bad if you just customize the rest of the weapon and ability icons to only appear when combat starts.

This is also how I prefer to play. Moreover, if there's a mod that allows to toggle HUD on and off with a press of a button, I'm installing it right away.

I dont blame them. Console versions of these games have really poor image quality in 60 fps modes which is where most people play games nowadays. Nothing looks good upscaled from 720p internal resolutions on consoles without DLSS. hell, even DLSS which is leagues ahead of FSR when upscaling from 720p doesnt look that great. yes, it looks clean and nice, but im not a fan of the soft image and i really dont like how the details just dont come through anymore.

if devs had balls, they would release games with only 30 fps modes like they did last gen, but standards have changed and they would get cancelled if they released a FPS with only a 30 fps mode. the few UE5 games ive played on consoles do look great in the 30 fps modes, but only 25% of ps5 gamers play in 30 fps.

Sure, but that's true for like the majority of games, especially open world ones. Cyberpunk IMO has an even worse UI.
In AC I don't see it that bad, in fact I have something like this, only in combat all tht crap appera, but I'm sure you can turn some off.

your screenshots are so clean. do you have film grain, chromatic abberation turned off? whats your DLSS set to ? 4k dlss quality?

UE3 was designed for 7th gen consoles to target 30 fps. UE4 was designed for 8th gen consoles to target 30 fps. UE5 was obviously also designed for 30 fps, but the simultaneous rise of 60 fps on consoles and the expectation of 60 fps has been a disaster for perception of the engine. It hurts to say because I'm almost exclusively on PC and I hate 30 fps, but it's true.

Yeah people love the Sony first-party stuff for running at 60 fps and looking relatively sharp. It's because it's all cross-gen tier at best. Maybe Epic miscalculated with UE5, because 60 fps is clearly the expectation now which clashes with what UE5 was designed for. But the mainstream discourse ignores the nuances of how things have played out.

If this console gen had a real showstopper 30 fps game in the launch window (like a R* title) I think things would have played out differently, instead 60 fps became the expectation whether good or bad.

Yeah, turned those off, funny thing CA isn't turned off in earlier screens, but more recently. I feel CA is a bit too agresive, like it's applied smack down in the middle of the screen.

I pretty much turn these off in every game. Or if they are sliders, I let them on, but at minimum.

As for DLSS, it's 4K quality. It's ok for most part, it's not 60 clean throughout and also have dips to low 30s.
But I mean, I have an ancient CPU, 5600X, 16 Ram - I know I'm fucked - and an RTX 4070. So I'm more than happy I can run it max 4K.

It's why I put the utmost trust in Digital Foundry's words than the craziness in this forum sometimes, fun craziness don't get me wrong, I love it just for that.

But Arc Raiders? Borderlands? Holy fuck this is getting ridiculous.

Finishing up Mafia and they are finally adding some volumetric effects and changing the time of day slightly which makes the lighting look better.

I still dont like how janky the cutscenes feel, i dont like the character models which look last gen as fuck. But sometimes just randomly the game's cutscenes can look absolutely insane.

Black Myth Wukong is so impressive everyone's mom calls it Black Dick Wukong

Jokes aside i always am floored when i launch it after a few month of not playing, it looks so good, even on PS5 pro with the not so great image quality
