I'm probably going to be reinstalling Windows soon as my NIS has gone batty (Can't turn the firewall on as it doesn't think I'm an administrator, and it won't let me uninstall it because it says I'm not an administrator).

I'm looking for an antivirus that is very good at picking up viruses, but also isn't a resource hog.

I'm pretty much looking for the same features in a software firewall.

Can anyone help?

if you're looking for free alternatives i highly recommend Avast antivirus - it has a wealth of features, auto updates frequently and hasn't failed me yet in the last year.

as far as firewalls i'm very partial towards them. ever since i purchased a NAT router a few years ago i haven't used any software firewall whatsoever with absolutely zero problems. then again i use firefox and don't install programs with spyware on them so YMMV.

I'm just looknig for the best solutions. Money isn't a problem, as these probably won't be more than $50 or so each, and I get paid Friday.

Antivir is great. German craftsmanship. I use the free version which has kept me in good shape for years now. Small and clean too. You can pay for the pro version and get more protection and features if you want that.

Kerio is my firewall of choice. Try to get one of the older, leaner versions and teach it well.

Those are my suggestions.

Check NOD32 out. I loved the thing, I believe it's $40 annual, and it's what MS uses in house. Of course, I'm on a Mac these days, so :: shrug ::

I was just at the NOD32 site yesterday. I was trying to search for the thread that talked about which antivirus MS used in-house, and I couldn't remember if it was NOD32 or Kapersky.

How does the Panda program work? I remember a while back people were recommending that up and down.

Anyone have any other firewall suggestions?

The best in dectecting number of virii are still Kasperky and Panda IIRC. They are rated very stable.

Panda is very hands free (which I necessarily don't like), and you must give it extra 30 seconds during boot to load and update properly. Other than that, it works pretty much like all other AV.

BTW, you can get Panda personal for $20 or so at Newegg.

And as for Firewall, it's always hardware firewall for me (my router).

I use NOD. nice and quick. Moved over from Symantec cause it seemed too much of a resource hog.

For firewall I use the personal version of Sygate firewall. Nice, lets me configure enough rules for me to not need the full version.

As far as I can tell, it's not much of a resource hog. You just have to let it to it's thing at boot before launching web browsers. And I did buy the Internet Security package, but I turned the firewall part off right away, so I don't know how that is.

Now why wouldn't you just buy the antivirus?
