I'm gonna be done with finals next week, and I'm thinking of some books I'd like to read this summer. I definitely think Count of Monte Cristo has to be on it, as well as Treasure Island. Probably Angels and Demons, too (I haven't even read Da Vinci Code yet).

any other ideas for books that'd be a good read for the summer?

the stand by stephen king

Agreed. Picked it up the other week, really enjoying it. There's precious little to beat taking a break from study for an hour, and reading in the summer sun.

If you can find In the Garden of Iden by Kage Baker, I guarantee you will not be disappointed. It's the perfect summertime novel. Someone recently reccomended it to me, and I've been hooked to the series ever since. It is fucking fantastic popcorn reading.

Here is an Excerpt.

i picked it up a couple weeks ago having already seen the miniseries. the books is many times better , dealing with every issue in depth. I really like the military issue which is more in depth in the book. same with trashcan man.... damn the kid

Kurt Tucholsky - Castle Gripsholm

A short, lighthearted little love story. Written by one of the best, if not the best, satirist of the Weimar Republic. (and it even features a threesome! hrhr)

Book Description:
The multi-layered allegorical masterpiece that prefigured the rise of National Socialism. A teasing lightness of tone pervades this fable-like short novel about two lovers who, during a summertime idyll in the Swedish countryside, encounter a crying young girl running for her life from a children's home run by a sadistic headmistress. The lovers take the girl back to her parents, but the fact remains: the mistress's grip gets more crushing every time one of her charges tries to slip out of it. Catsle Gripsholm is one of the undisputed classics of modern German literature-a parable of devastating beauty and malice, as exuberant and lyrical in its descriptions of nature and pastoral innocence as it is bitter and undermining in its contempt for the Nazi regime that forced the author into exile, publicly burned his books, and persecuted him until his early death.

Different seasons! Great book, expecially "Stand By Me" and "Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption" are stunning classics. Good choice!

Baudolino by Umberto Eco is pretty good.
I'm about halfway through right now, it's like a hilarious history lesson on 12th century Europe.

FUCKING AWESOME!! I cannot describe how talanted Alex Garland is! This book is such a good read.

For this board's posters?

I'd say The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay by Michael Chabon.

Any self-respecting comic nerd and lover of great literature needs to read it. You guys will love it, I guarantee.

And I just finished Jeffrey Eugenides' Middlesex. A fantastic piece of storytelling. A great example of an epic novel that feels delightfully intimate.

Kazuo Ishiguro's phenominal Never Let Me Go. Summer or not, this is just begging to be read by more people.

On the other hand, Chuck Palahniuk's new one, Haunted, is unbelievably awful, revolting, and thoroughly worthless. He really should've stopped after his first two books and just fucking killed himself or something.

Wow funny...I was just about to post a thread like this. So far on my reading list I was going to check out Battle Royale by Koushun Takami (the novel not the manga).
