I've never heard anything that even comes close to the work of Mitch Mitchell, hallow be his name!

peart > portnoy

if for no other reason than if there was no peart, there would be no portnoy

both are great though!

MOE TUCKER!

Well, maybe not the best, but she got awesome mileage out of a shitty 3 piece kit.

Another personal favorite is the dude from Deerhoof. Or that guy from The Helio Sequence/Modest Mouse's latest album.

Claude Coleman from Ween. He hits the drums like a bastard. Got into a car crash two years ago, all banged up. "So I shattered my pelvis, fractured my jaw, had severe brain injuries, clotting of the brain. I had constant vertigo and dizziness for about six months. Then I was in a wheelchair for two months, after that I had to do nine months of rehab to regain my strength, and then came a period of cognitive therapy, started to relearn language skills, memory skills and how to be a nice guy." He's still rockin' like a hurricane, hitting the drums like a bastard.

And as with every other member of the band, a horribly underrated musician.

Hellhammer made a necklace out of skull fragments from the lead singer after they found his dead body (they also took pictures of it for an album cover). He wins the hardcore drummer award.

I don't know who is in second place after Bonzo.. please discuss

Bonzo and Yoshiki

Bonzo because of his sheer power and Led Zeppelin would be nothing without him, much like the other 3 band members

Yoshiki because he has close ties to Joe Hisaishi and Takeshi Kitano :D

Echo.

And for a serious answer, Cozy Powell.

--

In fact, fuck both of them, the answer is Gene Krupa.

John Bonham of Led Zeppelin.

Other may play with more precision, but nobody played with more feeling or originality.

I was going wtf completely.. until I noticed you were calling John Bonham Bonzo.

He revolutionized the way drums had the microphone placed... and you should all check right now the solo track he has in Coda.
