Have to go with Bonham, but I really like Max Weinberg (Springsteen/E Street band drummer)

Other notables that i like listenin wise :-

Jimmy Chameberlin
Keith Moon
Dave Grohl (if only for Everlong, but his drumming on QOTSA Songs for the Deaf is amazing)

for pure technical ability :-
Mike Portnoy (Dream Theatre)
Dave Lombardo (Slayer, Grip Inc, Fantomas - got to be the HARDEST, FASTEST drummer ever)
Omar Hakim (session drummer played with many people - actually went to a drum clinic with him a few years back... holy shit... amazing, effortless drumming)

Who is the runner up to Mitch Mitchell you ask? My friends, the answer is Stephen Perkins:

I'd love to hear who Nirvana's best drummer was. Because there was nobody better than Grohl. I've never heard anyone say that Nirvana had better drummers. Seriously, their previous drummers were fucking terrible. So boring and dull. Grohl's playing is fierce and really hard.

Me too. It certainly wasn't Chad Channing. Maybe Dale Crover from the Melvins? Though he wasn't ever really part of Nirvana...

Crover recorded 3 songs with Nirvana at most. Channing did the rest. I always thought Channing was pretty bad. You ever see a Queens of the Stone Age show when they have a replacement drummer playing the hits Dave Grohl wrote for 'Deaf'? All of the drummers play a much more simplified version. They skip certain hits because they're not as fast as Grohl and they don't nearly have the same attack.

Download their live performance of "Go With The Flow" (I think it was) on Leno and watch the drummer. Then listen to the album version and the replacement misses so much shit it's not even funny. Dave Grohl rocks me so hard.

But that's nothing out of the ordinary for live music. Recorded drum tracks are almost always better than the live stuff since they get as many takes as they need to pull it off.
