Greatest Moment In Competitve Gaming

My personal greatest moment in competitive gaming is when I had an intense 24 hour marathon on Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo (PSX). The entire time it went back and forth; I'd win one game, my friend would win one game. I'd win two games, my friend would win two games. We ended up playing for twenty four hours before I finally pulled ahead by four games clinching the victory and falling out from exhaustion.

Won a Super Smash Brothers Melee tournament where there were an uneven number of players, so the second to the final round I was faced up with two opponents instead of one. Unfortunately both of my opponents were friends. Thankfully I have the skill to destroy both of them. I went to the final round and won 2 tickets to a Blink 182/No Doubt/ Maroon 5 concert and a free video game, pretty cool.

too many great moments in Goldeneye multiplayer to mention... and a little too long ago to recall specific moments. I was pretty unbeatable until my friends used explosive weapons, otherwise they didn't stand much of a chance.

Probably the first time I played GoldenEye, my friend brought it over, and I would just headshot his ass everytime with the cougar magnum on accident, he'd get pissed and I'd be happy.

I miss that day :(

I played Perfect Dark on Complex with two of my friends who were also highly skilled in the game. They played against me, two on one. Weapons were: shield, cloak, farsight, phoenix, laptop gun, and n-bomb (there may have been one more, but I forgot). Final score? 23-23 (kills) for each team. The Farsights made it really hard, because both of them had one each most of the time, meaning I could never just sit still. They also destroyed all my laptop sentries, so there was no use using those to ambush them. I was really at the top of my FPS game in 2000.

When I was a freshman in college, we used to hang out in a guy's room who had a Saturn. He was from Sweden and would just destroy anybody with those blond haired blue eyed devils on Sega Worldwide Soccer (starring Cobi Jones).

One time he played the 2nd best player on our floor and went up 4-nil at halftime. He played the second half by sitting on the controller and yelling "I'm beating you with my butt!" He won, playing with his butt, 4-3.

My latest moment would have to be the 1 1/2 hour volley my friend and I had on Mario Power Tennis. It was a deuce, and it went from my advantage, to his advantage, to my advantage, etc...etc...etc. Well, about an hour and a half in, he was going for a dive, and his finger slipped off the analog stick and I won the volley. He was nearly in tears.
The best of all time would have to be the SSBM tourney I won at the local indie store near my house. It was Corneria, and I was Link. It was a battle royale, and I was playing against a Pikachu, Mario, and Kirby. My opponents were pretty good, but imported the original SSB when it came out, and have been playing it ever since. Well, the Mario was knocked out by the Star Fox's lasers at the front. I whittled the other two down to one life each, and they decided to gang up on me(the crowd screaming Get Link! didn't help either). One of them grabbed a hammer, and knocked a life off. I had 2 left. I finished off the Kirby, and the Pikachu was left. By the time I took the Kirby out, I had 200% damage at two lives. He took me out with his lightning blast, and we each had one life. He had 50% damage, and I had 0. I managed to take him out without taking the damage. I won the tournament, and got a $50 gift certificate. The guy controlling the Pikachu, grabbed his free rental card, got into him mom's car and started crying. It was the greatest triump ever. The match should have been easy, except for the stupid hammer. I am surprised they even got me down to one life. :lol

Watching 3D tear through the Euros at Summer CPL 2003 was my favorite time in competitive gaming.

Too bad that wasn't Summer CPL 2003. It was Winter CPL 2002.

SK.Sweden teared it up at Summer CPL 2003, and Winter CPL 2003. Owned.

Personal greatest moment was 2v2 UT CTF in CTF-FacingWorlds.

I was teamed up with some random guy, he was fairly good, nothing to write home about, playing the best ranked player in Australia at the time, and one of his friends. The match began badly, my team losing 2 captures in the first 3 minutes, with 17 minutes remaining, there was plenty of time for a victory from the opposing team. The following 15 minutes were spent playing defensively, simply holding off what seemed to be the inevitable. with about 3 minutes remaining, the match was pretty much wound up, until I ventured for a capture, armed only with the sniper rifle, picking off the opposing team with a string of headshots, getting the flag, and running toward our base, facing the spawn points, capping them off as they came, returned for a hard-fought capture, 2-1 the score. There was roughly a minute and a half remaining, and we needed one more capture to force the match into Overtime. I played defensively this time, capping the other team at their spawn point with the Sniper Rifle, again, my teammate managed to get a capture with about 20 seconds remaining, forcing the match into overtime.

What followed was a gruelling stand-off that easily lasted about 20 minutes, both my team adn the opposing team coming close to captures, only to be gunned down in our own respective bases. Again, armed with the Sniper Rifle, my teammate with the Rocket Launcher, we made a hasty assault on the opposing teams base, my teammate picking up the flag, teleporting into the sniper nest, jumping off the edge (Why I don't know, that's intant death) and dropping the flag. Me being in their base at the time, spawn capping again (Hey, I'm an asshole) realizing he'd dropped the flag, running out of the base, picking up the flag, running toward my base, dodging rockets, sniper shots, coming over the crest of the hill, dodging like crazy, breaking out into laughter as I entered our base, and returned the flag for a 3-2 win in overtime.

Sorry for the length. :lol

Unreal Onslaught. Flew my Raptor over their base, it was 14-7 (their lead) on the score.

14-6

They're shooting me down!

14-5

I jump out of the raptor at 100 yards up in the air, point the redeemer at their power core and let it rip.

14-4

I land, see myself surrounded by two guys.

14-3

I kill them with a little bit of fancy gun and jump.

14-2

Finally, the redeemer hits the power core, for 15 damage.

0-1

^_^

I love Onslaught. I was addicted to that for the longest time. I always get stuck with morons all the time, but I am not too bad, so I can make up for it. Your story sounds great though. I have never had a comeback like that. The other team must have been slapping themselves in the face.

My personal greatest moment was being #1 in the US on the Ikaruga high score list that Atari created for the US release. I had to go to a Summer school program at Ohio State so i couldn't hold my place, but it was awesome while it lasted.

Ya, I figured I had the event wrong but was lazy. And I love euro teams, so you don't have to start with the owned. SK, EYE, titans, 4K, GoL, eoL, spiXel, and so on, watched and appreciated them all. ;) 3D is just my team of choice.

GAF needs to watch more fighting game videos. The Diago video is nice, but greatest? Come on. It wasn't even the final match of the series.

Suggest some videos to watch.

I love the Daigo fight...

*parry*parry*parry*parry*parry*parry*parry* (breath) *parry*parry*parry*parry*parry*parry*parry* (jump) *parry* 12 hit combo to win.

Circuit City was very wise to sponsor Team 3D. They are great, but it is just fun to watch them play, whether they win or lose. The Euro teams are great though, and I could actually learn a thing or two from them.

Did you watch the recent ICSU matches from Novella lan(correct me here santacruzer)? Great example of how adaptability/coordination/communication > skill/experience.

I saw bits and pieces of it. It was absolutely excellent. It is extremely hard to not love perfect team work. A lot of teams fail to use their equipment and team mates correctly.

Who's heart didn't stop when Daigo jumped?

My personal experiences would have to be online PC FPS games as being the best competitive experiences. DOOM 1 and 2 via 14.4 modem...Quake 2 CTF, Front Line Force for HL really stuck out for me.

IMO it would be harder to do that 720 in the middle of the super than do what Daigo did.

not my greatest moment

i was playing myth 2 and decided to go join one of the ranked rooms in bungie.net. i would always play unranked. so in the channel, the highest ranked player was talking shit about how great he was and so forth. blah blah blah... i started talking shit right back. so he challenged me and a team of 3 other people to battle him. so he makes the game and we join. he chose the map where their is a big hill in the middle and you are able to pick a giant who was able to throw rocks. i was team leader and instead of using my points to get a giant, i got as many barbarians as i could have and a few other units with the remaning points i had. i gave a total of 1 unit to one of my teammates and started rushing towards the middle with all my barbarians. when he spotted me with his giant, he didn't know how many barbarians i had so he threw a rock and then he realized all of my units were running back and back in a single file line and i was charging right at him. he started running and eventually i was able to catch up with him and i chopped that motherfucker up. NEXT THING WE KNOW... HE DROPS! it was fucking hilarious. we told everyone what happened in the chatroom and so forth. blah blah blah he came back with more shit talking and completly denied how he lost. good times.

I love that "jump do nothing 720" the Hugo player did at the end of the first match.

edit after watching second round: NICE! I need to get that good.

I had many great moments, but the best must be the multiple-hour match I had in Goldeneye with two friends. I ended up having 72 kills and while I was only killed twice myself :lol

People needs to see less videos and play more SF3...The Daigo thing constantly happens in that game. That's what makes so awesome the SF3 fights: the fact that you are nearly screwed and your enemy has a full bar but he has the feeling that he can screw the whole round and he acts with fear...then you just have to be very concentrated and he will loose.
It's not that I am able to parry an entire Chun Li SA2 but...I reproduced this entire scene a lot of times (with other chars). For instance the other day was great: it was a Ryu vs Oro and I was playing Ryu. My brother had a quarter of life and launched me that enormous ball of fire Oro has (he expected me to die cheap) anyways I parried the entire move and proceeded to him with a Shin Shoryuken :)
Nothing makes you feel better.

I'm really enjoying the objective matches in Halo 2 right now, and pretty much any time I CTF or plant the bomb (or stop the opposing team from CTF at the last minute) it feels like the greatest moment in competitive gaming.

My best achievement in competitive gaming was being on the top 10 worldwide high score list for Wetrix (N64) for a while. Graduate school interfered with my ability to stay on the list, but that's still the best I've ever been at a game in my adult life.
