GT 4 Mobile (PSP) - the "what happens when *real* screenshots are shown" thread

Alright, let's get this out of the way first - this game is up there among my most anticipated PSP games, just next to Wipeout and the inevitable GTA.

However, I'm very interested to see GAF reactions when the actual screens turn up eventually. I recall chatter of someone from PD expecting it to be a big technical challenge.

So, as a reminder, GT4 Mobile screens from E3:

GT4 Mobile (PSP) - May 2004

"Its product quality is not at all inferior to its PS2 counterpart."

So, what will happen when first pixel-to-pixel screens of GT4 Mobile are released?

Will it completely and utterly embarrass the above attempts, living up to the expectations set in E3 2004?

Or will it cause a forum outrage led by PSP-naysayers because not looking as rich as the E3 2004 screens?

Speculate away!

Its PD so I would bet it would look pretty good but if not, these others still look good to me especialy for a portable.

Haha, don't worry. I already have my damage control story ready. I'll just say that the old pictures were replay (which they are), and thus looked better than the future in-game pictures. GT3 and GT4 are the same way, they always look much better in the replays...hell most racing game in general are like that.

You never know. GT4 in HDTV 1080i really does look close to those 1280x960 photo mode renders that do NOT have the motion blur or depth of field enabled.

Kaz has already said that the PSP can't run it at those graphics unless they pull the number of cars down on the road to around 3 which is what they're planning to do.

No Ridge Racers? ;)

haha, didn't remember that as has been already released and sitting here next to me. I was only thinking upcoming stuff. Here we go (and it looks a lot better than those western attempts):

Sorta off topic, but does it take dropping down 16 bit color output for PSP to make games look this good? Look at all the dithering in these direct feed pics.

So far only Japanese developers have taken the PSP seriously. By that I mean that decent budgets only come from developers that are either japanese or Sony itself.
All the others are spending crappy budgets on PSP development...THe system is powerful but it doesn't do miracles.

To be fair - the specific screenshots from the movie you posted are screaming prerendered AA, MB etc, and also completely embarass the PS2 version of GT4 while we're at it ;)
Of course you could also pick other racer videos from the same E3, some which we are already seeing on PSP by now...
That said, as pointed later in the thread, japanese racer efforts on PSP seem to look much nicer thus far then the rest of the guys.

Just to point out something here - there's no such thing as stronger or weaker hw dithering - the 4x4 dither matrix is applied across the whole screen equally. Obviously, like with many other digital processing effects, they are only intended to work without blowing the pixels up ;)
But to answer your question, 16bit buffers free up more fast memory. If 32bit doesn't look much different in the end result for a particular game, it's a worthwhile tradeoff.

Yeah, the dithering is SUPER noticeable on my custom-built 10-inch-screen PSP.

"GT 4 Mobile (PSP) - the "what happens when *real* screenshots are shown" thread"

... DS fanboys will say that the DS could _easily_ do something of comparable quality, showing F-Zero for the N64 as proof?

What a worthless thread!

- no new screenshots
- no real screenshots
- bad thread title
- shitloads of speculation

YAY CLASSIC GAF! :P

Pretty much every PSP game runs in 16-bit color, though. TOCA2 absolutely does...

While the screen is large for a handheld, it's still small in comparison to what consoles will be displayed on. 16-bit rendering artifacts just aren't all that noticible when in motion on the real hardware.

If PD takes the PSP as serious as they take the PS2, I think we can expect graphics comparable to Gran Turismo 4.

Ridge Racer in higher resolution would probably be considered a pretty good looking game if it was released on the PS2.

I don't know how about GT4, but NFSUR looks gorgeous in IGN's CES videos. The pics don't make it justice. It also does seem to be more fluid than the console NFSUs to me.

Funny we dont see any Ridge Racer PSP screens :D

Honestly..that psp packs a huge punch of visual power...much more then DS

GT4 Mobile will look nothing like GT2000. It'll most likely look a lot like GT3, but with GT4's brighter color palette.

Kinda unfair picture showdown, as the GT4 pictures are AA-ed and processed, while none other posted after them are.

You can't really see the dithering on the PSP's screen, unless you *really* look for it, at least not in RR. Besides, those two pictures are very under-representative of how the game looks while running.

Is this the opposite of damning with faint praise? Kind of like praising with faint criticism?

"To make games look this good". Who cares what they do if they look 'this good'?

Actually I already played the game on a SyncMaster927DF, and the dithering is not really noticeable either.
Granted - it's a bordered PSP pixel resolution window inside a 640x480P (it doesn't get scaled to full screen size), but still.

Was actually thinking to post a thread PSP screen vs Syncmaster927 :lol

I expect that it'll be much like Ridge Racers, where in motion on a PSP it'll look as good as its console counterpart, but in blownup screenshots, where the compromises are more apparant, it won't.

So basically neither side will agree and there will never be a resolution, just many, many, casualities.

I think some of the most interesting reactions are the ones we're already seeing, what with the likes of DCharlie and Sho Nuff actually saying nice things on behalf of Sony products. Holy crap, that still wigs me out.

Which is why you should continue to nurture this love/hate thing you've got going for the PSP since most of our other sources of "objective" criticism are failing us.

When the real screenshots hit, I expect much pounding of tables causing many a loose UMD to inadvertantly get flipped into people's morning coffee.

;)

Yep, had to create this thread as I feared that the relationship is sliding on the "love" side - I just charged two extra batteries to be able to play all the way over the Atlantic to LA next Tuesday, and will get a 1GB memory stick tomorrow to fill it with content to entertain me over BA's family movies.

In preparation for the GT4 Mobile screens, I've downgraded my coffee cup from the ridiculously huge-ass Swiss Mlitary cup to a smaller one that does not have room for a UMD.

Aah, but have you checked out the ba.com website to see what movies are playing on your trips? I have, and I've adjusted my 1.5GB of movies accordingly. Thats sad :/

It really is:

Ladies In Lavender
Wimbledon
The Village
Cellular
Collateral
The Bourne Supremacy
Enduring Love
The Mask of Zorro
Garden State
From Here To Eternity

The only even remotely watchable is The Village, and I've sen that already. I was actually exposed to Wimbledon and some other crap drama when flying BA from Dar Es Salaam. I know what PSP is good for.

Now, I just have to learn to encode movies with OS X... I just don't feel digging into the huge ass thread about it.

How can you not like Garden State? I'll try to help you with the OS X encoding later, send a PM.

Sounds about right.

Hopefully it's as nice as GT3. If not, I'll be a bit disappointed. Only a bit though. As long as they give Polyphony the proper time to include all the features they want, then I have no problems. The game will certainly be one of the best-looking if not the best when it's released. And if it has anywhere near the amount of stuff the console version will have, then my day will be made. :) This is the only version of GT4 I plan to get. PEACE.

one thing is for sure, it wont look like those screens...

Probably not, but consider who is developing GT4 Mobile. I mean, who woulda thought that they could have pulled off GT4 at 480p let alone 1080i on the PS2?

They will have to cut things to make it work or use compression like mad jesus to make it comparable to the console version.

Or they could ship the game on two UMDs.Anyone know how much of the DVD9 GT4's filling?Granted,a few things in the console version won't be needed in the portable one,but if they can get six cars on screen at the same time without much quality lost,I'll be impress.
