No matter what I try, I cannot stop this game from stuttering like shit.
Really starting to piss me off.
Same here. I don't even want to play because of it. Of course stuttering is like the only thing I can't stand and I can't get rid of it.

I'm only using like 2.7 GB of the Vram though..
Ya I get stutters ever so often even with gsync.
I'm wondering if the VRAM on the 970 is bumping up to the point where it slows down dramatically.
EDIT: Changed some shadow settings. It turns out that High Resolution Shadows don't actually turn on unless your Shadow Quality is already on Very High. I bumped up Soft Shadows to Softer to mask some of the pixelation of the shadows on High. This still results in a locked 1080p60 in the benchmark.

Skimmed through the thread and didn't see this mentioned but the benchmark tool works fine IF YOU BEAT THE PROLOGUE and then be sure to have story mode loaded before loading the benchmark tool. The problem seems to be that story mode loads automatically from the start screen where you are probably going through the graphic options such that it ends up loading the benchmark with story mode running behind it (thus the interesting "failed mission" during the bench since the prologue is running).
Having now extensively used the benchmark tool to reach a constant, unwavering 1080p60 fps, here are my specs and settings.

I have bolded what I found to absolutely crush framerate at times (as in 60 fps suddenly dropping to ~30), most of which are related to shadows. The extended distance scaling also has a huge impact on framerate. I think that these settings were CPU-limited since Afterburner would often, at those fluctuating times, have my GPU usage at only 60-70% but CPU at 90%+. Shadow details, specifically resolution, killing framerate while not maxing GPU usage might be a GPU bandwidth limitation.
With the above settings, the game is running locked at 60 fps while looking amazing.
Reported by GTA or MSI Afterburner?
That's the exact same FPS I get with a TitanX (with no MSAA).I'm getting 70-90 FPS on a 970 with no AA at 1440p (that includes reflection AA).
FXAA looks like trash and MSAA is far too expensive.
So yeah, the game now crashes every 15min or so for me, always with the same error.
Anyone got this fixed by a chance?
i5 4570 / GTX 970, latest drivers
Thanks, that doesn't help me with GTAV in the immediate future though. What's the ETA on the 980ti?

Are you turning down or disabling a lot of settings? What are you using to track your FPS?
I have set 60fps max limit in RTSS and also inside MSI afterburner, is RTSS enough?
I'm surprised at how good this port is. I can have nearly everything at max except for the Advanced Graphics options - probably due to VRAM -, which just tank my game. And I'm on a GTX 580, too; so I get the game usually between the 30-60fps region, with a few dips into the 20s due to grass. I'll probably lock it at 30 for the sake of consistency. MSAA is out of the question, though. Oh well~
Pretty shocked it's running as well as it is on such a card too.
For those of you who have said that framerate takes a huge hit once out in the countryside, does the built-in benchmarking tool not show this? I.e., benchmarking tool = solid 60fps, but countryside = less?
Ok I bit the bullet, after reading up I should get a decent framerate at 1080p on my Rig
4790k @ 4.6Ghz
16gb DDR3
HD7970 Black
I only ever played it on PS3 and although choppy completed it, but skipped it on the PS4 hoping this version would be better.
Wouldn't doubt it if some of the stuttering is people hitting the VRAM wall. The game reports the VRAM usage but it's an estimate. Even when I choose settings that are supposed to be around 2.5-2.7 the actual usage in game typically hovers in the 3.3-3.5 range (and will get a stutter when it crosses that threshold on my 970).
That sounds very likely. I noticed the same by the way.

Does this really work as well as you say? Because it's recommending I play at 1440p with almost the same settings I have now and somehow I think they're trying to trick me into 30fps.This has probably been mentioned before but using the nVidia GeForce experience to optimize actually gave me the best look and performance...
mine is only a i5, gtx 670 and 8GB ram but it can max out all quality and maintain 60fps (at least in the city)
point is, much better than adjusting on my own
btw, is exceeding the video memory harmful to anything?
It's the other way around for me for the most part. My estimated VRAM usage is 2.3GB on a 2GB card, but in-game it tends to hover around 1.7-1.9GB. Though I do occasionally get some stuttering during more intense moments that goes away quickly.
Ah yeah, forget to mention. Steam and I verified the game files already, all fine and dandy.Do you have the Steam Version or the Rockstar version?
(Or some other version?)
I have the latest "gta5 ready" drivers installed, yes.Did you update to the new drivers?
I don't think I turned down settings other than no AA solution, including reflection AA.
I'll have to check when I get home.

The game's FXAA solution SUCKS. It barely does anything. Anyone try using Nvidia's FXAA from the control panel? I know it would affect UI elements too, but it can't be worse than the built in one, can it?
And yeah, MSAA hits me with like a 20 FPS drop, even at 2x.
AMD beta drivers bring a significant performance boost?

Does adaptive vsync work better than using Riva Tools to lock the framerate at a non stuttering 60fps?
I think it's time for me to upgrade my gpu. Been sitting in a 560ti since sykrim. I'm thinking a 960 would be a great upgrade for a great price...
No matter what I try, I cannot stop this game from stuttering like shit.

Just get a 290 if you don't mind going AMD, it's a far better value and only $30 or so more expensive than a 960.
What are the benefits of using them together? Just curious. I'll try enabling adaptive vsync when I get home though.Use both.
