GTA V PC Performance Thread

is there any kind of tweak guide yet? I've been messing with stuff but having to completely restart to make changes makes it kind of annoying to find the right combination

Ya I get stutters ever so often even with gsync.

I'm wondering if the VRAM on the 970 is bumping up to the point where it slows down dramatically.

Must be an issue with the 970 cause I can't get rid of the stuttering no matter what. I'm not using Gsync but I do have a 144hz monitor and it's still VERY noticeable.

Could the people reporting stuttering post a video?

I do have a slight judder at very high speed, but it is so minor that I wouldn't call it stutter. Looks like frame time issues as the fps are stable.
Besides this the game is butter.

EDIT: Changed some shadow settings. It turns out that High Resolution Shadows don't actually turn on unless your Shadow Quality is already on Very High. I bumped up Soft Shadows to Softer to mask some of the pixelation of the shadows on High. This still results in a locked 1080p60 in the benchmark.
---------------------------------

Skimmed through the thread and didn't see this mentioned but the benchmark tool works fine IF YOU BEAT THE PROLOGUE and then be sure to have story mode loaded before loading the benchmark tool. The problem seems to be that story mode loads automatically from the start screen where you are probably going through the graphic options such that it ends up loading the benchmark with story mode running behind it (thus the interesting "failed mission" during the bench since the prologue is running).

Having now extensively used the benchmark tool to reach a constant, unwavering 1080p60 fps, here are my specs and settings.

Specs:
Intel Core i5-4690K @ 3.5 GHz (stock)

I have bolded what I found to absolutely crush framerate at times (as in 60 fps suddenly dropping to ~30), most of which are related to shadows. The extended distance scaling also has a huge impact on framerate. I think that these settings were CPU-limited since Afterburner would often, at those fluctuating times, have my GPU usage at only 60-70% but CPU at 90%+. Shadow details, specifically resolution, killing framerate while not maxing GPU usage might be a GPU bandwidth limitation.

With the above settings, the game is running locked at 60 fps while looking amazing.

I have:

Intel 4790K
GTX 980
8 GB RAM

These settings are a godsend! Game never goes below 60 FPS at 1080P and it looks far better than even the next gen consoles! Thank you sir!

Wouldn't doubt it if some of the stuttering is people hitting the VRAM wall. The game reports the VRAM usage but it's an estimate. Even when I choose settings that are supposed to be around 2.5-2.7 the actual usage in game typically hovers in the 3.3-3.5 range (and will get a stutter when it crosses that threshold on my 970).

I'm getting 70-90 FPS on a 970 with no AA at 1440p (that includes reflection AA).

FXAA looks like trash and MSAA is far too expensive.
That's the exact same FPS I get with a TitanX (with no MSAA).

Are you turning down or disabling a lot of settings? What are you using to track your FPS?

Thanks, that doesn't help me with GTAV in the immediate future though. What's the ETA on the 980ti?

Current rumours peg June as the release month as Nvidia doesn't want AMD's 3xx series to steal the limelight.

Did you update to the new drivers?

I don't think I turned down settings other than no AA solution, including reflection AA.

I'll have to check when I get home.

Got on top of a small water tower last night and messed with extended distance scaling. Oh boy. Seeing a real car miles away is quite amazing. About half is perfect for my 980 and seeing eye candy.

I have set 60fps max limit in RTSS and also inside MSI afterburner, is RTSS enough?

Yes, the frame rate limit option in Afterburner is only for recording video - the settings you're talking about is in the 'Video Capture' tab, right?

I also want to add that it's best to set the frame limit in RTSS on a per-game basis. There is a 'Global' profile right at the top but that means it will apply to every game and I'm a firm advocate of only messing with something if it's broken. Add GTA5.exe into the list of applications and apply the frame limit just to that.

For those of you who have said that framerate takes a huge hit once out in the countryside, does the built-in benchmarking tool not show this? I.e., benchmarking tool = solid 60fps, but countryside = less?

Ok I bit the bullet, after reading up I should get a decent framerate at 1080p on my Rig

4790k @ 4.6Ghz
16gb DDR3
HD7970 Black

I only ever played it on PS3 and although choppy completed it, but skipped it on the PS4 hoping this version would be better.

I'm surprised at how good this port is. I can have nearly everything at max except for the Advanced Graphics options - probably due to VRAM -, which just tank my game. And I'm on a GTX 580, too; so I get the game usually between the 30-60fps region, with a few dips into the 20s due to grass. I'll probably lock it at 30 for the sake of consistency. MSAA is out of the question, though. Oh well~

Pretty shocked it's running as well as it is on such a card too.

Is this at 1080p?

A 580 doing near max and a solid 30fps is excellent performance. Good scaling on R*'s end, and the 580 putting in some work.

Use fraps in the desert or country side at night with a decent amount of lights. The benchmarking tool doesn't really stress these kinds of situations. I can easily post pictures of the issue if need.

Yeah you're good. I'm getting pretty good performance (mostly 60fps with drops here and there @1080p with some lowered settings) with an HD7950 and a 3570k @ 3.2Ghz, and only 8gb RAM.

That sounds very likely. I noticed the same by the way.

Was getting a solid 60fps earlier today and now its stuck at 59, wth lol. And now I'm getting frame drops when listening to self radio, never had any of these issues before smh

This has probably been mentioned before but using the nVidia GeForce experience to optimize actually gave me the best look and performance...
mine is only a i5, gtx 670 and 8GB ram but it can max out all quality and maintain 60fps (at least in the city)
point is, much better than adjusting on my own

btw, is exceeding the video memory harmful to anything?

It's the other way around for me for the most part. My estimated VRAM usage is 2.3GB on a 2GB card, but in-game it tends to hover around 1.7-1.9GB. Though I do occasionally get some stuttering during more intense moments that goes away quickly.

Does this really work as well as you say? Because it's recommending I play at 1440p with almost the same settings I have now and somehow I think they're trying to trick me into 30fps.

That might be the game taking into account the 2GB and thus... stuttering.

I have the latest "gta5 ready" drivers installed, yes.

That's pretty fucked up. My performance has been kinda shitty compared to everyone else. Hmmm...

The game's FXAA solution SUCKS. It barely does anything. Anyone try using Nvidia's FXAA from the control panel? I know it would affect UI elements too, but it can't be worse than the built in one, can it?

And yeah, MSAA hits me with like a 20 FPS drop, even at 2x.

Try it..since I don't know how. I just figured out how to set adaptive v sync lol

I'm rocking a pretty old rig I built around 5 years ago:
I-7 950 oced to 4gzh
14 gb ram
Gtx 660
And I'm still getting 45~55 fps with a lot at high with ms at 2x and 55~60 at 1080 with AA off entirely. Its quite amazing how optimized this game is. Had to force vsync on nvidia though, I get monster screen tear with the 660.

I think it's time for me to upgrade my gpu. Been sitting in a 560ti since sykrim. I'm thinking a 960 would be a great upgrade for a great price...

Here's my performance.

Downloading (8.48GB/60.04GB, 88.0KB/sec), 4h 55m remaining...

BT Infinity 2 (76Mbps download), wired connection.

Shoddy port.

For everyone testing out their framerate, the ultimate foliage test I've found is the marsh area just south of Zancudo.

All I can say is screw Ultra Grass. Dropped it down to High, now I don't go below 50 fps. Wish it would stay 100% locked at 60 (I do outside of heavy foliage areas), but MSAA on grass has some weird performance problems right now. And I'm not giving up my TXAA just for 10 more FPS in a few areas.

Just get a 290 if you don't mind going AMD, it's a far better value and only $30 or so more expensive than a 960.

i7-4790k at 4.6Ghz, 980 at +200/+200, 16GB RAM, SSD, 1080p.

Using philtastic's settings as a base, benchmarking is more-or-less 60, with Nvidia's V-Sync on (instead of GTA's).

"1527p" DSR to 1080p vs 4xMSAA (with TXAA on): MSAA gives better aliasing, with slightly more "shimmer" than the DSR solution. Very interesting for me to see this, as I love DSR in other games.

I pushed the draw distance to the maximum and no drops. In fact only MSAA seems to hit my GPU really hard. Even at 2x framerate is not good (low 40s).

I have an amd 290 and am running windows 8.1. How do I set my fps to 60 and AA to SMAA? I tried radeonpro and it crashes the game
