GTA V PC Performance Thread

I really wish that the dithering effect wasn't tied to which sort of AA you're using.

The performance hit even from just 2xMSAA is too high for my liking.
I finally gave up on MSAA in favour of 70fps+. MFAA and FXAA are enough for me. The crawling isn't desirable, but you adjust and enjoy the smoothness. But that's only because I'm on a 144hz G-Sync monitor, otherwise I'd go for borderless fullscreen 60fps, the range 2xMSAA seems to bring me down to (with drops).

After playing for many days I am now starting to get really bothered by the the flickering of shadows in the distance as well as painted lines in the road.

I have MSAA set at x4 and TXAA on as well, but the issues persists. Does anyone else have this happening? It is way more apparent during the day time and it completely breaks the immersion for me.

Not sure is this is a texture issue or Anisotropic Filtering perhaps? It's ugleh...

only way to fix it is brute force enough OGSSAA

Quoting myself becaude I've had no reply yet.

I've googled, but to no avail. No conclusive answer.

What's your VRAM usage like? With a 2GB 660(and 660 Ti) You need to keep memory usage below 1500MB or like the 970, memory bandwidth takes a shit because of the memory controller configuration.

Ingame FXAA is better than injected SMAA because the final frame has lots of other effects on top of that so injected filters can't see the real pixels easily.

I don't think there is a huge difference between the two but yeah, FXAA seems to work a bit better. However, I do like adding a little sharpening from SweetFX on top of FXAA so it doesn't look so blurry.

Oh nice, thank you! Wasn't aware of AO being bugged as well.

In other news, switching my RAM sticks to A1/B1 setup *seems* to have fixed my BSODs under heavy load so far (two ~2h sessions without any crashes so far!) so fingers crossed. Also I forgot I had driver verifier on due to my BSOD research, which seems to have been the cause for the unplayable stutter I was experiencing. After turning it off, game ran smooth as it used to.

MFAA does not work with FXAA.

What is the AO workaround?

Edit: Saw the update in the performance guide. As expected it makes the image look much better. Especially with grass, pretty much eliminates the need to have grass on ultra.

Mmmm i kinda missed that too. Does this AO workaround need to be done everytime I start the game?

Is that.....is that with MFAA on? I'm sure it looks better than FXAA in motion, but man those edges still look really rough.

Awesome, time for some sweet, sweet Ambient Occlusion!

MFAA doesn't show up in screenshots. It works by blending frames together, so you'll only notice it in motion.

So I gave up on anything stable at and am just playing at 4k with pretty nice graphics. Using MSi Afterburner I discovered on my 980 SLI setup, the gpu utilization of both gpus never really goes above 60-65%. So basically I'm only getting 120-130% increase of playing using a single 980 at 100% gpu utilization, which explains why the framerate is a bit better, but not perfect 60fps 4k despite two 980s.

I googled around and it doesn't seem like there's any way to increase gpu utilization in a game with SLI besides waiting for an updated SLI profile from Nvidia/game developers. So I'm fine just playing it like a console game at this point with framerate hovering around 45-60fps while driving. Just playing it and having a lot of fun. Fingers crossed though that at some point in the next month while I'm playing it an updated SLI profile will come out pushing the gpu utilization to at least 80%+.

I have been getting crashes at least once every session (usually an hour or two). Annoying but the game auto-saves enough that I don't mind that much.

Yep. I run into same issue with my two cards. I just ended up leaving things at max, turning off overlay, and letting gsync do its thing.

Am I just imagining things, or does driver forced FXAA, look better than in game FXAA?

Not only does it look better to me, but it also gets rid of the map jaggies.

I'm going to post this again, but anybody got a fix for shadows looking like this (stole the screenshot from someone else)?

CDlNUR8.jpg

I've tried a few different combination of settings from normal all the way up to very high/ultra plus the advanced settings and I can't seem to get rid of it.

Is it an aliasing setting I need to change or a shadow setting?

Pretty sure it does this on max everything.

Yeah, that's probably it then. Nothing my GTX 970 won't alleviate.

Right now, it's 100 MB "above the limit".

There is also a HUGE vRAM memory difference between normal textures and high.

Wow, so AO wasn't working before? Will try the trick later. Do I have to do it every time I start the game?

Also, what's the best way to lock the game at 40 fps?

Yeah just play around with settings to keep it under 1500 and see how it plays. If it's a lot smoother overall, upgrading to the 970(or 290) may be the answer.

It was working, and is visible in all of my guide shots, but changing the detail levels didn't work without the newly-discovered workaround. Setting choice will persist between sessions.

There's still a difference, albeit a slim one (more visible in forests with overlapping foliage and tree shadows, but I'm short on time)

Depends on your monitor. I've got a 120hz monitor, so just locking it to 40 with MSI afterburner works.

My current set up is DSR 1440p @ 100hz, then lock the game to 50fps with MSI afterburner in borderless fullscreen. It lets me push settings pretty farm downsample, and still look smooth.

wow just tried Sweetfx and SMAA injected. It looks really good, and just shows how washed out the colours are on default. using k-putts config and the vibrance added to the color is awesome. I will now spend longer staring at those gorgoeus sunsets lol..

Is there a way to use vsync without the game randomly locking to 30fps?

When I encounter this issue I usually put water quality on another setting, Play a bit and put it back to where I had it. Seems to help with the locking to 30 and 60.
Love the way vsync works, 60 is smooth whenever it hits, but under that it just puts out the fps it can handle without doing the slow-mo and turbo dance.

You could enable adaptive v-sync in the gpu control panel but you might get tearing instead of being capped at 30fps.

I have normal v-sync forced through nvidia control panel and the setting disabled in game. Game is locked to 42fps with RTSS and I get no tearing. Perhaps try the normal non-game v-sync.

I do need to alt-tab in and out once when I start it up otherwise performance is significantly worse.

You don't need to do the AO workaround each time you start it up, right?

Alt-tab once or twice after you start the game and that should alleviate that problem.

I'm wondering this myself. Obviously I'd really like AO on, but I don't want to have to do it every single time I start the game.

Many of those configs are way overblown with too much sharpening and way oversaturated colors and crushed blacks. K-putt does have some more toned ones at times though. Haven't tried the GTA V one.

Doesn't work for me. It loads, shows up the display for sweetfx when I toggle it in-game. Lags the startup like the readme notes mention (ended up disabling on startup and toggling it on later). But nothing changes... I tried k-putt's one too.

Actually it seems all he has turned on his profile is lumasharpen and smaa, possibly with really weak settings as I'm noticing no difference. Will mess around with the settings when I get back from the park with my dog (irl lol). Maybe that's my msaa though. Will try no msaa and a bumped up resolution.

TXAA really blurs the crap out of this game unfortunately. I'm still switching my AA options up far too much. Might just say screw it, use FXAA, and take the extra performace. I already had to bite the bullet and turn down grass to very high to stay near 60 in Blaine County even somewhat consistently. Playing at 1440p but that TXAA blur still gets to me.

Was getting a crash regarding a corrupt installation just now after doing the AO workaround. I'm thinking either that or the vehicle controller mod is the culprit, as it went away after I stopped doing the workaround and removed the mod. I'm not sure about it being the mod because it was working perfectly fine yesterday.

Any pics?

i took these kinda quickly but hopefully you can see the colors really stand out. i dont think its oversaturated but who cares as you can edit it if you choose. i think the added contrast looks great. just try on a grassy section with and without and youl see..performance is great much better than the fps sink that is MSAA
