GTA V PC Performance Thread

I agree that lower framerates are far more of a hinderence in online games like CS, but framerates that arent a locked 30 or 60 generally look/feel like crap on pc monitors. Even if you cap the framerate with a 3rd party utility. Gta 5 in particular feels worse than most titles. For this title gsync is a much better upgrade than a new gpu

Locked 42* fps feels a lot better than locked 30 for me. Looks better too... it's pretty smooth with RTSS. I use it to lock games even at 60.

I'll need to check out g-sync but my 780ti isn't the stud I thought it was when I picked it up, feeling the need to upgrade (got a free upgrade from amazon from last year that I've still held onto) but nothing reasonable out yet...

I was supposed to trade in this 4k monitor to go towards a gysnc 2560. I should do that.

*44 even, though I was playing on 42 for a while, which was better than 30 too.

I'm running at a locked 45fps and it's gorgeous. I don't know why 60 has become this magical number.

60 feels better for mouse control, and above 60 I guess, but it takes away that gamey feel to things and makes it more sim like - lots of additional detail and response with the frames, makes me more alert.

Less than 60 and it feels a bit more chilled out. Add some extra graphics to that and also prevent dips with a locked framerate and it's a decent tradeoff unless you want to play competitively, which I don't really want with GTA.
45ish doesn't drop the responsiveness with a controller too much either. I've been playing a lot of games that I use a controller for at around 40 something fps, depending on what I can get away with.

I'm about to give up on this piece of shit fucking game. I disabled all my overclocks and cranked down the graphics trying to find out what's causing the game to crash every fucking time in the middle of the first story heist (not the intro, the jewelery store with Franklin).

What the fuck. Every time I get out of the tunnel on the motorcycle the game crashes. Fuck this game.

I was having tons of crashes myself. It was corrupted data when downloading the game from Rockstar Social Lounge. Their download client is an absolute mess. Took me days to fix it.

Make sure the checksum for all the files listed matches. If it doesn't, you iwll have to redownload those particular files.

I can't seem to get AO working even with the workaround from the Gefore guide (Or is it on and I'm just blind? lol).

Here's what my game looks like after following the instructions (AO High, Apply, PostFX Normal, Apply, PostFX Ultra, leave menu and save changes):

Changing it to off or normal (with the PostFX stuff applied as well) doesn't change anything.

Took a punt on the Greenmangaming VIP price of the game, so far i would say its running pretty dam good on my 460GTX 1GB,Q6600,4GB ram using 1920x1080 normal settings.
Looks like i will keep the old junker a bit long till i do a full system uprgrade.

That's a terrible location to test :) Best seen in the city and around buildings, as I show in the guide.

What exactly is a gamey feel to things?

Slower fps has a loss of detail cause slower fps kills the temporal resolution.

I don't play gta competitively nor do most of my friends and we enjoy online when it keeps as many frames as it does vs high iq which once you start pushing the game only makes it slower and stutter more. This game doesn't hold up well at any standard it's all preference after certain point.

I avoid non stanardized resolutions cause they cause more issues in stuttering or bad motion image than if you used something that is highly supported. There's nothing magical about 60fps it's been documented quite a bit no voodoo or ritualized bs going on there.

At the moment I'm just playing the campaign, if I start playing online more I'll try and bump up the fps to 60 so that I can have some fun online and play using the mouse - partly to do with how it matchmakes you (or doesn't matchmake pc users who are using gamepad with other gamepad users on free aim). So I'll have to unless I want to join other gamepad users who are using full aim assist, which seems a bit boring for me.

As I mentioned, you feel less alert at a lower fps, it's more like a passive experience that you're enjoying, especially if the framerate is high enough that you aren't struggling to make out what's going on or fighting the controls (like with a pad).

When the thing you're watching is being updated and refreshed so you can track it much faster each second then you become more engaged and active. I like to sit back and chill out with gta.

Ambient Occlusion has yet to be incorporated in the PC version.

Quick question, does GTAV run better or worse than GTA 4?

Well, IV has constant dips to 40FPS when driving around the city. V looks way better while also maintaining 60FPS except for certain intensive areas at night, such as Sandy Shores or the Sawmill, where I'll get some dips to around 50FPS, maybe 55-59 if I turn down Post FX to High. So V takes a good creamy shit on that piece of shit IV port.

For the love of God, can someone show me how to get my wireless rumble pad working with this game?

Ive tried that x360ce emulator and a plethora of combinations ad nothings seems to make GTAV5 recognize my controller.

how are people submitting tracks to rockstar? I see some tracks are created by other people other than rockstar. some dude made a crazy loop de loop track. was fun

Getting about 30fps average on max settings @4k with my titan black and i7 4790k. Looks crazy good. I'm on stock settings so might overclock and see where it gets me.

Is it normal that ~30fps feel like 10fps in this game or is it due to G-Sync?
When I run the game with everything cranked up (incl. ultra grass) and playing in the city I get smooth 80-100fps but as soon as I go out of the city the framedrops are getting down to 30-40 fps but with the latter the stutter is unbearable. Any reason for this?

You answered your own question: you have everything cranked up. Ultra grass plus everything else is only possible on high-end systems. See http://www.geforce.com/whats-new/guides/grand-theft-auto-v-pc-graphics-and-performance-guide for specifics

I just wanted to watch this beauty with everything at max. But the ~30 FPS don't seem smooth. That's why I'm asking. :)

edit: or the EVGA precision tool is giving me wrong information. It's like some weird kind of stutter.

But if ekim is getting 30-40fps in the most demanding areas of the map and is on G-Sync, that should still seem reasonably smooth, and not 'like 10fps'?

30-40fps could mean anything, really. The actual 99th percentile frame time could be well over 50ms (i.e. <20fps), and g-sync doesn't help with that.

I played a bit last night and all of a sudden my AF is bugged(set to 16x in-game). I tried forcing it in the Nvidia CP but still no dice. I've tried messing with shadow/AF settings but it still persists. It seems other people are having this issue, this is what it looks like:

I never understood this. To me it's as simple as "the bigger the framerate, the better". I'm playing at locked 40fps and it sure feels much better than locked at 30 fps.

Obviously 60 fps is even better but I'll get what I can.

This is a shadow 'bug' but its done by design. Lots of people complain of the invisible box boundary after which shadows get blurred. Using the softer shadow settings helps obscure it. And sometimes it gets better after switching shadows to another setting, then back again. It appears more obviously in certain areas too.

for me, in the majority of games a v-synced and capped 30 looks and feels better. no tearing or stuttering

Yep, looks like a new update today guys. Will update the OP.

REALLY REALLY HOPE! That this fixes the issues with aliasing on shadows and road paint lines. PLEASE!

*edit*

It didn't fix it :(

Game's been getting positive press due to mods, so of course they'd be cunts and fight against them.

I've been hearing a lot of words 'n shit about people using Scripthook online, so it's not like this is entirely bad.

Though I'd definitely prefer seeing them handle mods like they did in GTAIV, which from what I've heard is through having a server exclusively for people who are modding. But considering there's the option to pay for in-game money with real money, I doubt they'll take any option besides stopping modding outright.

Oh, Rockstar.

Dunno if it's been intentional or not though -- maybe Script Hook does a checksum check for the executable or something to prevent it from crashing with incompatible versions or whatever. I hope we'll hear from Blade within the next hours :) Don't like the steam offline mode...

Don't think that has anything to do with AF, the shadow LOD in this game is bad.

So how would I cap the game at a "smooth" 30 fps? the Vsync half doesn't really do the trick as it feels way too stuttery. Want to use 30fps since my mouse aim is still as good as 60 (wonderful engine this game has) and I can turn my res up to HD.

This has been answered multiple times, but here you go:

Assuming you have a 60Hz monitor:

- Use Nvidia Inspector to cap frame-rate at 30 (or 45, if your PC can manage it)
- Enable borderless windowed mode in-game
- Set max pre-rendered frames to 1 in NV control panel
- Maximise motion blur in-game

Some assholes made a version that works online, but the original version is specifically made to only work in SP.

If an Ati/AMD user?

Is it also inherently 'fighting' if they don't deliberately go out of their way to make sure something they didn't author stays compatible? Because that's what we need, more reasons for them to be less inclined to update the game.
