Guild Wars 2 Launch Date announced: August 28th, 2012

Personally, I like the whole idea of just doing hit and run attacks on certain areas than joining some massive AoE shitfest

Roaming Charr warbands baby!

I'm a huge proponent of misdirection. I'm always looking for ways to split groups and thin enemy lines in PvP. Hit and run is always a fun time!

Retro can attest to my utter disdain for all things zerg-ish. So yes, I much prefer hit and run to being part of some mass of bodies that lines up against another mass of bodies and re-enacts old European warfare. So boring and worthless.

I really have no idea how practical this is, but is sounds cool. I think it would be cool to see our guild adopt a Charr legion organization in WvW. Basically have a bunch of 5 man warbands with a leader, and those warband leaders deciding overall strategy and party comp (what group attacks what location, the comp of the party, etc). Perhaps one of those dudes being the imperator as well

Charr only

Now, I wouldnt want to be a leader or anything, but I think i would like it more if we did something like that because it would feel 'guild warsy' and it would also make it feel more like a battle instead of a chaotic mess since you have objectives and you are following orders, etc

I imagine the guild will take stabs at such concepts at some point or another, if by sheer necessity and nothing else. [That said, I'm not an officer in the guild, so I have no inside knowledge of what they have planned.] Hit and run is perfectly practical. Really, one of the big problems that people had in the Beta was getting over that it was okay to take small objectives or that you needed supply and blueprints in order to reasonably take anything larger.

That will be less of a problem over time, and disruption as a strategy will become more common, I suspect. Especially while fighting enemies with superior numbers - which is bound to happen here and there.

Charr only... Pfft. ;)

Man I've been pretty much on media blackout for this game over the last 6-8 months, particularly since the beta started, can't believe its finally near release after all these years. The date is pretty good too, I just got a job that I'll be starting in a few weeks so I should have enough time to get some money together to either fix up my PC or completely rebuild. I really want to be able to play at launch.

I took some time today to log into GW for the first time in ages and actually attempt to get some reward points for my Hall of Monuments. I probably won't try to do anything that will require actual work and time, but I will spend my money and rare materials to get as much as I can before GW launches. Dropped about 100k today and picked up an easy 5 points so I'm at 10 now. I still have like 100k left and 20+ectos, so I probably have enough to buy up some hero armor and a few other things to raise my reward level to 15 or something. Good times.

Hey guys! I'm a freelance writer at GameZone and I recently wrote an article about ArenaNet. Check it out here!

Nicely done!

Your site says "RELEASE DATE December 31, 2012" for the game, btw. I doubt you had anything to do with that as it's probably set somewhere else and if you had any say it would have said November (sorry, couldn't resist), but I thought I'd let you know so you can notify the editors-that-be ;)

What? You don't get the statue after the undead lich?

You do, but its only worth like 1/5 of a point. You'd need two more Honor trophies to get the next point.

But doing War in Kryta will get you enough mats to get an Oppressor's Weapon which is 2 points i think :D (1 for "Any Weapon" and 1 for "Oppressor's Weapon")

Is that where you rescue her from the dwarves? I am pretty sure you need infused armor to stand a chance against the Jade constructs, and you wont get infused until the next mission. Just skip it and come do it later.

new interview with Jon Peters

http://www.guildwars2hub.com/features/interviews/profession-and-traits-interview-jon-peters

Jon: The engineer is the first profession we have addressed since the last BWE. Changes have been made to many skills and to the trait lines as well. The previous list of traits contained many holdovers from the old trait system that did not fit into the new tier paradigm.

Jon: Every single one of the kits has been updated and improved in the last few days. We will gather feedback on those improvements in the next BWE and continue to work from there. I’ll give you an example, because I am feeling generous. :-)

Mine Kit is no longer a kit. It is a single mine that works as the elements of the kit did, but now, when you detonate that mine, it knocks enemies back and removes boons. This means that you can throw it at your feet and then blast people away from you, or you can throw it past a fleeing enemy and detonate it to blast them back toward you. The tool belt has been replaced with a “drop mine field around my location” skill, which toggles to “detonate mine field.”

Oh. So, yeah. I'm going to be doing a LOT of testing with my Engineer this next BWE. That last paragraph was a big WTF moment.

sounds like a good change to me.

Wonder if the bomb kit is going to retain any knock backs. Somehow I doubt it since the mine would lose a bit of 'distinctiveness' if another bomb could knock a target back and just do something different besides removes booms - like dmg

Well, I'm not sure if it's a good change yet. It sounds interesting at the very least, though I fear that the Engineer is being simplified. I sort of liked that he was a bit more complicated than some of the other professions.

Oh, lots of good stuff in that interview. I especially liked the following bits:

Jon: We have handled a few bugs on the AI side, but we haven’t really tackled it full on yet. This is really a matter of resource management. The programmers who handle this stuff also work on other critical systems, such as performance. The short answer is that pets need to be 100% responsive in combat, always attacking when they can and obeying any commands you give them. That has to happen in order for us to release the game.
Jon: I am currently working hard to make improvements to each and every profession, particularly fixing skills that were either not useful or too weak. Expect to see significant changes for almost every profession for the next BWE.

Man, I cannot wait to get my hands on this game again.

See, I don't see this as simplification... at least not in a bad way.

In the previous build, Mines simply did damage, and were a little more difficult to use in the heat of battle (had to switch to the kit before you could start laying them down). You could lay down up to 5 mines, detonate them one at a time, or detonate them all at once... and that was all you could do with the skill.

Now, mines have a knockback effect, remove boons from enemies, and they can be used instantly. You can either drop a single mine at a target location, or drop a minefield (I would guess this contains 5 mines) directly at your feet. On the flip side, you lose the ability to individually place and detonate multiple mines. Certainly the use case of the ability has changed. Instead of being used for area denial, but requiring a decent amount of setup, mines now have more utility, both in chasing and escaping enemies, and are quicker to use. My guess is they determined that groups of engineers were coordinating to lay down huge minefields that were just too good at area denial when used in that way, but no one was using them in direct combat situations, and they wanted to remedy that. (Edit: Actually, reading up on mines, it looks like people were just plain not using them at all because they were considered bad).

Now if the change is ultimately for the better is going to depend on the numbers. Do the mines still do the same amount of damage (and does the minefield do around as much as 5 mines)? What is the cooldown situation with the ability, and do the placed mine and the minefield share a cooldown (and for that matter can you have both out at once)? Also, what happens to the trait that currently removes boons from enemies hit by mines, if mines now do that automatically.

Until we know the numbers it will be impossible to tell if the changes are truly better (I'd guess yes), but its certainly not dumbed down. And it's not as if it's suddenly less fitting of an ability for the Engineer. Not every utility skill needs to replace your current weapon, especially when it only had two abilities to begin with (place and detonate).

Holy hell it's been way to long since I've posted in a GW2 thread. Suffice it to say I'm glad we finally have a release date plus a solid date for the last BWE. And now with the news of all the profession changes we'll be seeing, I can't wait to get my hands back on this game. Couldn't be more hyped.

My Asura Warrior/Guardian (haven't decided) is ready for release!

Very excited to see that professions are getting a pass over and a hard look at for this next BWE. Overall I had been feeling kinda meh about the Guardian skills in general - other classes skills (ELEMENTALIST) look incredible and fun to use, whereas the Guardian just kinda peters out on the way they look. If I go towards a spec that is about burning my enemies, I want to feel like I'm on righteous fire and you're about to be too. I know about the Torch skill, and I love that one so much.

They weren't all-powerful when it came to area denial, but they were good at doing it. Having the ability to manually set where you wanted them and such was actually quite decent at that. I think people generally didn't use them because the Mine Kit wasn't especially fun to use; it was very utilitarian.

Your last sentence is sort of where I am with the change, frankly. That's what I meant before when I said that I wasn't sure if it was a 'good change' or not.

Ice cave something saving Evennia

Spend 25 minutes getting near the end, wanted to get the bonus... realized I got absolutely screwed and the only way to get the bonus is to cheat.

Sounds like the mission where you have to stay away from Murssat because you are not infused yet.
Yes the bonuses are not always clear, I just always used guides, when I was going for my tittles.
I did most of the prophecies back in the day where if you wanted to finish them you needed 8 people and usually someone knew the proper way of doing the bonus.
Good luck with Thunderhead Keep.

I'm soooo damned excited to see what they do with Engineer. To bad I need to wait until release to see the changes myself. Hopefully someone posts a brief synopsis of all class changes.

I'm sure it's been asked before.....is there a place to view patch/update notes?

I'm going to ask you something most of you will want to kill me for. Is this game worth it if I have absolute zero interest in PvP? Because the first one was not (imho and for my tastes) and haven't followed GW2 changes much.

I believe so. I have had an absolute blast in PvE (solo). Take this from the perspective of a player who did NOT enjoy WoW PvE. I have yet to do any dungeons in GW2, so someone else will have to give you their impressions on that.

Why would we want to kill you for that? I think the majority of us at least have a decent interest in PvE.

And yes, the PvE is very good. Between dynamic events, personal story stuff, general exploration, and dungeons, I think you'll find plenty to do. That said, I would recommend you at least try WvW at some point. It's less intense than team-oriented PvP, and it can be enormously fun. In addition, ANet has already shown some interest in mixing PvE elements into it.

If it helps, the best reason to play this game IMO is that the professions are pretty diverse and interesting - they play well and you're free to play what and how you like as the trinity is gone.

I think it is. It's really fun to do dynamic events with other players.

I really like the idea of roaming small groups. That was my favorite time in WAR and WoW, and for a small amount time; Aion.

I think I will just play the Warrior and use a ranged class for screwing around. I actually like the big zergs where it's a ton of people AOE'n from keep ledges and such so that doesn't bother me as much as others. But I like small group PVP also.

I think the hardest thing will be to learn the classes in general, knowing what each character can do to take me down is always the hardest part of learning an MMO for me.

Absolutely. You can get XP just for exploring the world!

edit: other completely PvP-less highlights...

-Jumping puzzles (requiring legit platforming skill)
-A seemingly ridiculous number of minigames we haven't seen yet in the Beta events
-Instanced personal stories which vary between and within each race (quite a bit replayability)
-If you ever do feel like easing into PvP, WvW is amazing

When participating in a dynamic event (like defending a keep), is XP determined by factors other than damage dealt?

I was looking at some Guardian skills and thought of some neat ways to help defend/ provide support. But I don't want to receive a bronze medal just because I wasn't bashing in heads.

Absolutely yes. I don't know exactly what counts and how you'd be rewarded in a keep defense setting, but I've gotten gold on events that had combat components without doing a single point of damage before.

Participating on Real Picture Avatar month.
Enjoy my smolder!

God damn, this wait is going to take awhile but at least there is a release!

Just want to show you guys how rich I was in GW1...

Ecto buyer alert!

Nice pics.
Everytime I try to screencap on GW though, the pic comes out all dark for some reason.

Whoa. So much... farming

I farmed the Griffons in Augury rock back in the day, with my warrior. Then they shut that down pretty quick. Also farmed the heel out of FoW spiders, also with my warrior, that got me a lot of shards which gave me enough plats to buy Ectos. I stopped farming after got my FoW set. Most of the money was doing FoW & UW runs with my guild.

Ahh the memories. Felt like a bad as getting in FoW and farming spiders, always yeilded at least 3-4 obsidian shards.

Even with all that farming, I'm only at 31/50 HOM --> http://hom.guildwars2.com/en/#page=...AA&todo=AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

I prefer small splinter cells or skirmish parties - however you want to define it - because I think it keeps you on your toes, keeps you thinking, and helps you develop as a combatant. Being part of a zerg encourages laziness of skill usage, weak awareness, and a herd mentality centered around the sense of security the zerg provides. In addition, if people are playing smart very few objectives require 20 or more people to take so the scale - the breadth of capture points taken - is diminished by staying in one big mob.

I hate, hate, hate zergs. I'm fine with grouping up if the objective truly needs it, but grouping on that scale just reeks of massive opportunity cost.

Yeah, torch/sword all the way! I like to call it teleburn.

this is going to be teh new king of the hill, there have been many attempts at the crown, but I think this is gonna be it, game looks like great fun. Best of luck to arena.net ...aka blizzards battle.net team.

You know there is only like one person at Arena.net now that did anything important at Blizzard right? I would find it really unlikely that Mike O'Brien is actively developing anything while running an entire game development studio.
