Guild Wars 2 Launch Date announced: August 28th, 2012

"Area denial is the Guardian's strong point and is a form of CC so their CC is hardly subpar."

What area are you actually denying frequently in WvW? Very situational. Cooldowns are very long as well. Meanwhile, Elementalists, Mesmers, Engineers, Rangers, etc. have a larger amount of CC abilities that are useful in a larger variety of situations on shorter cooldowns.

Just having CC doesn't mean their CC isn't subpar, it's also about how useful their CC is overall *in relation* to the other classes in the game.

I must say, after watching that WvW video (well, about 50% now), it really has me rethinking my class choice. I have zero interest in sPvP, all out WvW. It seems like the guys in the video were a make up of what? 70% Ele's? All the damn AoE with staff is insane. Static Fields, Meteor Showers, Geyser, Healing Rain, etc.

Seeing those guys critting for over 5k and 6k on AoEs? And not even level 35 yet? Obviously, the opposition wasn't geared out in high lvl armor either, but still.

They literally slaughtered the Lord room in a couple parts of the vid.

Either way, very good players. Loved how they knew and used the environment to their advantage. Suckering people into a valley was great.

I'm not making an Ele. Pretty sure they'll be the first profession post-launch that gets nerfed. For exactly the reasons you cited.

Anybody got some youtube videos of how various systems actually work? Like crafting, the trading post, armour transmutation and WvW? Even though I played BWE2, I felt really overwhelmed and couldn't figure out a lot of the stuff. It'd be nice to be a little better prepared going into BWE3.

They really should have a character creation module you could use before the official launch.

Over 80% of my BWE3 will be disgusting amounts of screenshots showing where the sliders are for the customization of the characters I want to make, and then deciding what names I'm going to try and snipe for those first 5 characters.

My next experiment will be making a name, deleting it, and then asking someone else to try that name to see if the 24 hour name-reserve system works like in Guild Wars 1.

That's an okay TP video, however, she makes the mistake of calling it an Auction House which it is not because there's no bidding, it's more like Craigslist than anything.

Yeah, I was just watching the part where they wiped out a small army of the red team that was trying to capture a tower. Elementalist or at least AoE heavy classes, seem to be the way to go for WvW.

That video was from BWE1 so much has changed balance wise and will continue to change so don't be hasty to make a quick judgement on Eles.

I think I'll be joining GAF in Gates of Madness for BWE 3 and possibly launch, but how do you guys communicate? Vent/Teamspeak/Mumble? Or just guild chat?

I believe we will still be in Henge of Denravi for BWE3. GoM is only happening at launch

Man, I'm such an Anet whore. I just purchased the OST on a whim :x

Heh, that's funny, I just ordered it tonight too. I hope I didn't miss out on the signed copies, but I'll still enjoy it either way.

My next experiment will be making a name, deleting it, and then asking someone else to try that name to see if the 24 hour name-reserve system works like in Guild Wars 1.

If they're two-word names, you can reserve them right now as long as you have a copy of Guild Wars 1. If they're one word names;
In Guild Wars, names are reserved for at least 24 hours after a character is deleted, however ArenaNet has not confirmed whether the same system will be in place for Guild Wars 2. During beta testing, names were reserved for at least four hours and less than thirty. (source)

No official word from ArenaNet yet though, but I would expect that to carry over into launch.

During the next BWE when the forums are open, I plan to ask them about three things;
- Length of time names are reserved.
- If they will ever add 'lore points' similar to Vistas
- They they will ever add "Director's Commentary" points to zones you've completed.

During the BWE we'll be on Henge of Denravi. We ended up on that server because Gates of Madness wasn't added until BWE2. Definitely be on Gates at launch though!

As for communication, we do have a mumble server. Details are in the community thread OP, which you can read here; http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=467970

Careful now, we are on Henge of Denravi for BWE3. We won't be on Gates of Madness until release.

Edit- Too slow.

Per WvWvW:

Guardian is more effective after the walls break down. They can bubble/wall the gate entrance to delay the push in. They can also bubble on the high walkways that lead to Guild Lords to knockback invading players. They can provide group aegis, protection and regen, but Ranger spirits accomplish these things with less upkeep required. So while they can do it, some others do it better. A ranger doesn't have as many tight space tools though, so while they're better at wall defense and sieges, they don't barrier off choke points as well.

The same is true of Eles in regards to WvW. Great at wall sieges/defenses, but with maybe less group support than rangers, but better choke point skills.

Necros can deal do some nice siege defense with marks and wells. They can also fear at choke points.

Mesmers are a little different from the rest. They have limited access to AOE, and that greatly limits them during wall sieges. As well, their aoe spam attack 1 key attack on Staff cannot hit people on walls. What Mesmers provide is instant mass transport, stealth, and single target CC.

Warriors have Longbow for wall sieges and banners and shouts for support, making them useful in different situations. They don't have a lot of area denial, but are generally useful.

Thieves and Engies I haven't seen enough of to say much. Thieves do have mobility and stealth, meaning that they and the Mesmer are good for split squad strike force teams. Engies have a lot of tools, and their AOE and area control works better in tight spots.

Got my Black Moa Chick. Zaishen keys definitely feels brutal to get, but the alternatives are just as worse.

How much are Tormented (Armbrace of Truth) and Destroyer Weapons?

Destroyer weapons are 70-100k straight up depending on the weapon, cheaper to buy the mats and make it yourself. Armbraces are uhh 28e = 196k. Much cheaper to go with making 5 armors than 1 Tormented.

So since I didn't get around do play dungeons up to now: With the trinity "gone", what did they do to not transform "tank, healer, damage" into "damage, damage, damage, and everyone figure out yourself how to dodge"?
Or is is exactly that?

It's control/support/damage and everyone does their part in all of it. Everyone has these tools at their disposal and they use them whether they like it or not. Though it's a matter of using them properly. If a mob is heading towards your friend and is about to kill them, you'll want that knockback to save his life so he can get out of there and heal up. The goal is to not take damage at all and you use control/support to do just that. Damage is obviously damage, but there's unique stuff you can do like cross profession combos and condition applications with your allies.

I was in WvW with a friend of mine and he was downed, a guy ran up to him and mid finish him I knocked him back and got my friend up. Was amazing and it was all thanks to my proper use of control.

These are EXACTLY what I needed, thank you.

I can't solve the caching issue. What did you suggest I do?

40 minis
20 companion statues (EoTN heroes have the cheapest armor so aim for all of those and a couple Nightfall heroes)
Whatever 5th title you want
Elite Luxon, Ancient Armor, Asuran, Norn, Monument (easiest way to get the faction you need for rank 5 asura/norn is to turn in a hero's handbook with 10 pages to the respective npcs)
Any Destroyer weapon (cheaper to buy the crafting mats and go to slaver's exile and make it yourself than to outright buy)

Thanks. I already got 10 cloths from a gaffer, but what armor should I get for non-EOTN heroes?

I'm quite late to the party, I know, but if you don't mind an amateur's suggestion...

What do you guys think?

humandemo.png

Instead of doing borders I had an idea you could try by throwing some brush strokes across the images to try and blend it into the background, so you don't have to mess around with transparency.

Just did this as an example of what I mean...
raceshuman.jpg

EDIT: Just thought I would add, I don't want this to appear as being rude or disrespectful toward Jira by showing something visual, this is intended purely as a suggestion.

Both the designs are really pretty, but are also really close to what is shown in the Races page in the official website.

What about something somewhat closer to their wiki style?

I've been trying to get the Mini Black Moa chick so I can finally get the HoM points for unique pet.

Last night I finally filled up the incubator with all the items and then I headed to Surrows Furnace, me and my 7 Hero Player Support team.

I had totally forgotten how that fight went, so I pretty much stomped on anything that got in front of me. I thought that after I kill the djinns at the end the Iron Forgeman would wake up and attach me, but when the djinns showed up the Iron Forgeman collapsed, and it happened so fast because my team is just awesome, so I never got the hot lava poured on me to make the incubator into a mini pet.

Blah! After that I just exited because was upset.

I'll try again tonight probably, try and get to 33/50. (pretty much just wasting time, till the beta because I really don't want to start any other game)

How is everyone today?

I'm thinking of trying a Warrior next Beta since I only played Engineer during the last two betas, anyone else trying a new profession?

I will still hop on the Engineer to see the changes that Jon Peters mentioned in that GW2Hub interview while ago.

Actually, now that I'm looking at those Races banners... I think I prefer the border version more on my smartphone. On a computer, I prefer either Cad's approach or the Wiki style.

Hmm...

EDIT@Kos: I've played all the professions, actually. My plan is to play almost nothing but PvE and explore the world a bit more. Done virtually nothing but WvW in the prior BWEs.

@Vinci: That's cool. I only played the engineer and strictly PvE. I want to try WvW but I've never really been into PvP, and I was going to try it for sure if there wasn't anything new in this BETA but since they are opening up the Sylvari and Asura area, I might have to just keep WvW for once the game releases.

I don't know. Enjoying just completing everything in PvE. I feel overwhelmed with trying to pick all the traits and all the skills, will always feel like I am making a bad decision.

I mostly played the Engi as well. Just like the versatility of the profession. As for choosing skills and traits and all that, don't worry too much about it at first. Grab things that sound good to you or that you think would match your way of approaching things. You don't have to get a master build right out of the gate, and even a build that would be considered unoptimized by some may be extremely optimized for a specific player.

Just have fun.

How important is being on Mumble when playing WvW because, I do not have a mic available for this BWE.

I guess I'll hope in and take care of the Dolyaks.

For serious WvW, I would consider voice very important. That said, I didn't use Mumble in the prior BWEs at all. You can still do stuff, learn some things about Engi in WvW. Make sure to at least talk in Guild Chat if you can't voice - you'll be okay.

Agreed.

On the same subject of voice comms, does anyone else have issues with hosting your own ventrillo server and the game? I try to run vent so my son and I can play with comms. Alt tab, we hear eachother fine. Go into the game, it doesn't work.

Any ideas?

Speaking of WvW, has this been posted already?

It's a complete run of the dungeon you can access from the three WvW forts. There's lots of amazing stuff in there, aside from the many different activable traps meant to harass/hinder the other factions. The second video has my two favorite parts:
the pitch black zone at the beginning with the torchlights
, and
the arena part with the lever to release the beasts on the unsuspecting people coming after you
.

I actually tried going there during the last stress test. It was, as expected, quite challenging to navigate or even get your bearings; the fact that a large number of players from the other worlds were there didn't help matters. I ended up deciding to use my four hours for PvE. :)

I didn't even know this existed...

Tried this during last beta and didnt make it past the jumping parts. They were quite challenging, especially for a huge norn.
