I'm just going to leave this here:

Character wipe for this BWE kind of sucks. I was looking forward to taking my higher level ranger into WvW.

Oh well, I'll just focus on the new races instead I guess.

How are the achievements? Are they meaningful or more like "kill 100 of this" ala WoW?

I'm an achievement whore and I am really interested in getting this game, but i just don't want to dish out the cash and find out that the carrots are not something that are right for me.

Check them out for yourself:

Some are kill X number like the Slayer ones, but there's many categories. Also note that what you see there isn't final and they've likely added more now.

If you're volunteering, we'd like to have an EU officer. Everyone is in the same guild, of course, we just want someone in the EU time zone who can address their concerns on Gandara.

As i said before, i'm willing aslong as it's nothing too stressful nor involves a ton of commitment. I'm fine with organising WvW meet ups and PvE gatherings and such.

Shouldn't we do some scouting of Gate of Madness WvW performance atleast?

Beta server pops/WvW performance isn't indicative of launch cause think about it...we're not rolling on our Beta servers and you can bet a lot of other people aren't either.

Also,

Actually, during BWE1 I went there and participated in "Keg Brawl Practice". I was basically alone there with a few NPCs which tried to brawl each other. The skills when you were holding the keg differed from those when you weren't holding one. As far as I can remember, keg skills had some in the lines of a tackle, a short sprint, a short pass, a long pass and one more that I can't remember. The keg-less skills were sliding tackle, short tackle, kick etc.

Dat Rugby.

Just a reminder:

Even though characters are being wiped for this BWE and even if you can choose a new server, everyone still roll on Henge of Denravi (NA) and Jade Sea (EU) just so there's no confusion.

Didn't EU players leave Jade Sea because they made it a French language server?

HoM GW1 related - how long does War in Kryta take? And is getting a Black Spider in Underworld doable with Heroes? I want to be able to say that I made it to 30/50 without ever grouping with another soul in PvE.

Well it still stands for Beta, but not for launch. Launch is Gandara for EU.

1-2 days depending on how much you play.

Yes, very doable, it's what I did.

Get the initial quest, clear that, then accept

http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Restoring_Grenth's_Monuments

then go to

http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Wrathful_Spirits

To get there from the area where you accept restoring grenth monuments, go to the left doorway from the way you came into the room, go through there into a graveyard like area with some spirits. Clear out the majority of that area and accept the wrathful spirits quest. Kill all the spirits and complete the quest to spawn the Black Widow and then flag your heroes away and tame it. Very simple, will take 15-20 min assuming you don't get lost.

A tip for War in Kryta, bring the Ranger skills "Frozen Soil". I used Pyre Fierceshot and had him constantly using using it, only disabling the skill after the fights so I could rezz anyone who died.

For the Black Widow, its very easy to do. If you want I can walk you through it sometime.

LOL NOPE it's starts with a G is good enough for GAF.

:| Probably won't be joining GAF because of it, kinda sad :(
Seeing as WvW isn't our main focus in the guild we really had to go with the easiest way to pick a server and that was it. I also would like to know how exactly scouting a server where everything is going to be wiped before launch and we would have data for 2-3 days on would go.

On launch it's going to be a whole other animal so everything before then really does not matter that much seeing as how the servers are all going to match up correctly once the game goes live.

-Wonderful spider catching goodness-
Thanks! Seems easy enough. I think I might be able to get to 30/50 soon. Spending hours in Kamadan selling/buying managed to pay off, even though it was such a painfully dull experience. Once I get a weapon and armor it should be cake.

Thanks, but I can't break my tradition of never grouping for PvE in GW1 now!

Haha do the mobs revive a lot during War in Kryta?

The last mission has a lot of mobs that can rez so if you don't have reliable interrupts it's best to use Frozen Soil.

Well... Gate of Madness could be one of those Servers who don't participate at all in WvW at all. It was introduced later (BWE2) and since no one has experience on GoM we don't know if it is one of those servers who don't even bother pushing out of their spawn points. If anyone has played on GoM, I'd love to hear their experiences with WvW.

Picking the server specifically for WvW is the most important aspect of picking a server IMO. You can do all the other stuff by guesting. You can Guest and do events. You can Guest and Dungeons. WvW is the only thing server selection depends on.

I am sure it wont be a blunder of a choice. It is a really cool name and that might be enough to get higher population at launch. If it ends up being a bad choice, we are going to be stuck with it unless we pay a transfer.

ANET needs to turn this into Beta Week. There's too much... seriously too much... The Asura and Sylari were overload already.

EDIT: For what it's worth, I saw a video the other night of WvW with Gates of Madness in it. It was losing to two of the star servers - those with famous YouTube people on them - but it was holding its own. So yeah, even if we assume that people won't completely change server from Beta to Launch, an injection of a pretty large guild like GAF could push it in the right direction.

Even if there is a lackluster WvW community on the server, after a few losses, we'll be paired with equally crappy servers, then it won't matter.

But how do you know all those people that started on GoM after the wipe will still go to GoM? Theres going to be transfers after launch so doing all that before launch I just don't see how good that'll actually be.

That's always been my point. It'll all even out eventually.

Ya you may start winning, but what's the fun in low population and low skilled fights? Seriously WvWvW is the biggest end game there is, I'll be damned if I don't try to pick smart on server.

Makes sense about how it'll even out. I'll just do a free transfer and see if it is abandoned in WvW during BWE3 for my own peace of mind.

My theory is: if people who picked GoM are crushed in WvW they will be reluctant to pick it again on release. If they place 2nd or Win and there are numerous Guilds established people would pick it again.

Choosing a server right now based on WvWvW performance is a crapshoot unless you know a sizable number of competitive PvP guilds that are for certain going to roll on a specific server.

I'd rather have a guild of bros like GAF's guild on a medium population server than roll onto a full server where I don't know anybody but its more likely to score a few percentage points in XP bonus.

is there a good writeup somewhere along the lines of "play x profession if you like a y-kind of playstyle?". something that contrasts pve and pvp/wvw as well as things like twitchiness, tactical command selection/positioning, skill ceiling, etc... (obviously there's variance on this front between professions)?

something spoiler-free regarding the racial stories would be neat too... funny, epic, dark, convoluted and twisty, etc... some races surely will have story arcs that are more appealing to certain people than others...

Craps shoot yes... but atleast you can make a semi informed decision about it. There will be a pretty good documentation of where the major communities are going to go for retail.

What if 4chan/Something Awful decides to join gates of madness, will you guys still go with it?

Yep. It's about choosing a server that is memorable and attached to the GAF name.

Gates of Madness (GAtes of Fapness) is and will be our server - and whoever we get matched up with, we will utterly destroy because even if it's low or medium pop, we'll be the most organized group.

I'd love to see this, cause I have yet to see it happen with all the GAF guilds I've joined.

I'll probably join a high population server because of WvWvW. Imo, the more players there are, the more fun there is to be had ( like the SA march of the hundred siege golems, these things don't really happen on low population servers).

Good luck to you. Honestly, population size won't really matter all that much because you'll have WvW with respect to your own server size.

I already moved to GoM for BWE2. During the first day GoM dominated the entire map, so the second day it was paired with two extremely high population servers and was getting crushed. The server rallied and fought back and controlled most of the map even against the two high populations, and they remained in control on Sunday.

That is really reassuring to hear!

I just want the server big enough that all zones can be full at once. I don't want to have to be winning a battle and the other people just hop to the other zone and take a completely undefended zone.

You get in a server that big and you may not even be able to get in WvW with the limit on it.

I mentioned this before, but I think I saw part of this when they were losing. Because they were up against two really populated, really energized servers. Hell, that's a given since people on the other two were online broadcasting and asking people to help them.

EDIT: There are pluses and minuses to virtually any method you use to choose a server. All in all, I think our choice is good. It's a cool name, already did fairly well in WvW despite being a brand new server at the time, and so... I think we're fine. I don't want to be on a server with the uber guilds. Fuck that.
