Guild Wars 2 Launch Date announced: August 28th, 2012

I'm sure it takes skill to PVP in GW2, but when I played it kinda just seemed like a clusterfuck.

Play sPvP then. That will be much more focused on skill than WvW. WvW will always be more about coordination or just simple numbers than individual player skill

Even then it seemed like a mess. Maybe it's because people don't know how to "play properly" yet, but it was just a lot of spamming.

I only tried WvWvW for like ten minutes. I was actually talking about sPVP.

will there also be sPvP maps that are not capture the point?

There will be eventually. They said they tested every PvP game mode you can think of and they settled on CP as the first one.

One thing I noticed is he said 10 on 10 hot joinable, not 8 on 8. Hmm, wonder if they are upping it?

They've said in the past that you'll be able to make custom servers of 1v1-10v10 with any map rotations you want and you can even change the max score to win and such.

Could someone give me a brief rundown of how to get the best experience out of Guild Wars for a brand new player with a secondary focus on getting HoM points? I've googled and checked the guides but I'd rather spend my time until GW2 launch more experiencing the original game/story itself rather than try to follow a less satisfying path just for points.

From what I can gather, I should start with Prophecies and then possibly go to Nightfall once I get to Lion's Arch. Grab some heroes then go back to Prophecies and run through the campaigns in order. Does that sound good? I only have the trilogy so that's a main reason I'd rather do it this way, to put off buying EotN until I actually decide if I care about HoM points.

Thats the best way to do it if you want to play the whole trilogy. Now that you can have 7 heroes, they really make everything less stressful.
Prophecies will be good to play because it directly involves the world that you'll be playing in gw2, but it is a lot slower to level you up compared to the other campaigns. I feel nightfall is a much better campaign.

If you end up liking the game, do consider EOTN even if you don't care to grind for many hom points. It is the best campaign. Short but sweet and they introduce the new races in gw2. It's just a little more difficult than the other campaigns.
Either way, I think most of the hom guides mention beating the campaigns first, as they're a great source of titles and money.

If I just own Nightfall, is there an off-chance I might actually do something exciting with the whole Hall of Monuments thing? I don't think I really understood how it works.

edit: Oh well, I'll pass then. Not sure if it's worth the time and money with a game I honestly don't like that much :(

You also need Eye of the North expansion, where the Hall of Monuments actually exist. Also to open up the Monuments you need to finish that expansion pretty much.

Deciding what to play is going to be so tough.. I've managed to narrow my list down to 4 characters so I don't have to buy new slots immediately and I have a character slot for general fooling around.

Here's my list, does anyone have similar thoughts about the professions?

main - Human Mesmer - I really want to main the Mesmer, they seem like an unique class. While not as unique as the Mesmer in GW1 and albeit in the need for some love still, but I'm hoping anet won't forget this class after release and things will get better. I really like what I'm seeing though, and there's a lot of potential there.

alt1 - Norn Warrior - Having a simple pick-up-and-play character like the Warrior seems like a great choice after the Mesmer, and the Warrior doesn't seem to have a lot of glaring issues like the Mesmer.

alt2 - Human Thief - Usually I play thief/rogue classes in all games, but for some reason the Thief in GW2 seems, in a way, a very unconventional take of the class. Stealth IS a bit clunky and trying to land those backstabs with daggers is even more clunky with the positional requirement. Still, I feel like I want to learn to play the class since I feel that it'll be rewarding once you figure it out.

alt3 - Sylvari Ranger - Honestly, my only reason to play a Ranger is to play it on WvWvW - my other characters have PvE covered from pretty much all aspects. Does playing a Ranger in WvWvW make the "that guy"?

Your choices are fine. So long as you like playing as those professions, that's all that matters - not whether it makes you that guy or not. That said, and I'm biased here, but I think people don't give the Mesmer nearly enough credit. It has a ton of utility in virtually every part of the game and really shines, IMO, in WvW. For overall usefulness, I would put Mesmer above Ranger for WvW.

Warriors will get a slight nerf, but other than that it's a very solid, fun profession to play. [i am guessing about the nerf, but it seems unavoidable]

Of your four choices, Thief is the one I think needs the most help; it's simply not the best at anything.

Warrior's Hundred Blades for greatsword was given the nerf bat at the last BWE..

so dont know how much more they can do for nerfing warriors

Eviscerate.

EDIT: To clarify, pay attention to how many Warriors run a GS - Axe/Shield or Axe/Axe combination. The majority of the burst kills don't come from Hundred Blades - they come from using GS for its mobility and to build adrenalin, then Frenzy, Bull's Charge, and Eviscerate to close, often hitting for 14-16k in about a second and a half. This is the most common build and the steps remain the same; that is, people do the same pattern of keys to take an opponent to 0 in next to no time at all.

When players behave so similarly in a game this based around skill and situational awareness, something is off - and that's Eviscerate.

Unrelated: Awesome Pony reference in the Hall of Monuments video around 0:30. Love you, Arenanet.

So what's the difference between one handed and two handed melee weapons?

The impression, implanted via previous RPGs, is that two-handed weapons deal more damage while one handed offers defense via shield, or two-handed offers AoE damage.

That kind of didn't seem to be the case. The auto-attacks on both sword and great sword seemed to generate similar damage and I am pretty sure the one handed sword also swings at adjacent enemies, like the great sword. To confuse me more - I saw some videos for "offensive builds" and they were packing one handed weapons.

Yeah my list was definitely prioritized based on what I want to play. Just slightly worried when people are already complaining about dead ranger pets in WvWvW and telling everyone to stow them :p

Not sure about Warriors, I haven't played them too much and certainly not in PvP so I can't really comment on that. Generally people seem to think that they are "OP" even after the big balance patch, but it might be that they don't really know how to counter one?

And I agree on the Thieves - part of me believes that the profession will "click" once I figure it out, but a part of me thinks it's mechanics aren't really working all that great. Stealth or Stealing for example. I've managed to pull some impressive damage numbers with it though, once everything clicks into place.

I think the only difference is that 1-handed weapons allow you to mix and match skills with offhands as opposed to 2-handed weapons just giving you flat out 5 skills to use. Doubt there's any difference in damage numbers or even attack speed.

Not sure about other classes, but GS on my Ranger had awesome PBAOE.

Finished reading the weeks worth of posts. No way will I attempt a Mega post..... just to much to respond to.

Can't wait to see your screenshots Welltall.

Deff think I will go warrior.. build will be axe/shield then Rifle..

key it so be able to stay alive.. so Vitiality+ Toughness+ Compasion will be important.. people make the mistake of going glass cannon to often.

Man, I knew I should of played more with the last BWE. I've been pretty dead set on Thief but second guessing it. Maybe Engineer. Choices choices.

Yeah. Ignore those people. Better yet, set up your Ranger where your pet can be sent to the nearest downed ally and see how much they complain when the damn thing saves their ass.

I don't use the term OP often. In fact I agree that most of the time it's more about people failing to play properly than it is the class being OP. Jack and I discussed this very issue the other night in Mumble and I told him my method or deciding if a class is OP or not.

Here it is: If the Warrior is built to maximize burst, and most sporting the build I described do, Eviscerate can hit someone for upwards of 14k damage. [Some build it poorly even trying to maximize it, so you'll see 10-12k here and there.] Now... Here's the question: "Did this damage occur because of a series of player mistakes?" The answer is yes and no. They missed a dodge. Was that an error? Yes. Does it happen even to the best of players? Of course, especially when dealing with a Warrior sporting that setup because they have Hundred Blades and Whirlwind - two skills that will stack lots of pain on you if you don't get out of them. Still, they failed to dodge so it's at least partially their fault.

Next question: Say you missed a dodge against another profession... Will a single move by any other profession put you down 80% of the time? Yes, this varies a bit by profession, but the answer is almost across the board no. Missing a dodge is unlikely to lead to a single skill killing you unless you were decently low to begin with.

Then: Can any profession do the same thing to a Warrior? The answer is yes, one. Another Warrior.

That, to me, is OP.

I think the only difference is that 1-handed weapons allow you to mix and match skills with offhands as opposed to 2-handed weapons just giving you flat out 5 skills to use. Doubt there's any difference in damage numbers or even attack speed.

This is correct.

When will the character creation screen be up?

Also, has it be confirmed that warrior will be nerfed? If so, yay!

No, it's not confirmed. I'm just guessing. But I recall some in the PVP tournament community sayIng that they expect a nerf on Eviscerate as well.

The clear indicator, theory-crafting aside, that the Warrior build I described is OP is that I have next to no interest in watching Warrior sPVP vids anymore because the vast majority are the exact same. No other profession that I have seen is this narrowly utilized. People appear to build other professions based on what they like; warriors are generally built around maximizing the damage and likelihood of landing Eviscerate.

FWIW: I really enjoy the Warrior. But it has so much potential for diversity that it's a shame to see it being used as a one-trick pony.

It's because" it's all about BIG numbers!"

Going with the "Main" theme....

Main: Female Asura Engineer. Honestly, the only time I played one was in closed beta. I didn't like it at all, but I have to think that ANet will do the class justice. I always tend to be drawn to "Engineer" type classes. Turret/grenades in Warhammer, bots in Hellgate London (don't judge me!), Saboteur in Rift....I like being a huge menace to opposing teams in pvp. Just hope Engineer is good at PvE as well.

Alt 1: Female Human Ranger. Fell in love with GS Ranger in BWE 1 and 2. I'm hoping there hasn't been much change with the GS. I am a "pet guy", so hope their AI has improved. Plus, all my HoM work has been based around getting Ithas Longbow and Ranger pets. Want Black Widow so bad, but don't see myself being able to get up to 30 points.

Alt 2: Female Asura Necromancer. Haven't played one yet, but the class interests me, even if its nothing close to what Necros were in GW.

And before anyone says it....yup, all my MMO rooms are female. :P

I tried this while I still had access to the Beta and honestly the only thing I didn't like about it is AutoHotKey's right click script felt unresponsive. Sometimes pushing the button to activate it worked fine and sometimes it didn't. I think I'll wait for official controller support myself...

Oh yeah, if it is what I think it is, that takes a bit to get used to, but it's not actually AutoHotkey's fault. The thing is that Guild Wars 2 doesn't immediately hide the cursor/enter camera mode when you hold right click; you have to drag the mouse a bit for it to kick in. When you click the analog stick, sometimes you also move it a bit (it's hard not to), so it goes into camera mode immediately; other times, you click perfectly straight, so the cursor stays until you actually move it.

There's another thing (again GW2's "fault", unfortunately) and that is that every time you zone in or watch a movie (like, say, a vista), camera mode is turned off even if the right mouse is held. This means that every time you zone or finish watching a movie, you have to click R3 twice. You'll do it automatically after a while.

no items, Fox only, Final Destina...

Next patch sneak preview: all racial elite skills have been replaced with LANDOMASTAAAAA!

I didn't actually want to reply to any particular thing, but you have a G1 Optimus Prime sock puppet avatar and that's just too awesome. :)

Going to bed at 10, setting alarm for 2 am (assuming a midnight PST, 3 am EST release).

Will be buying more No-Doz, protein bars, and bananas. 10 days of GW2!!!

Midnight is doable. Not a bad time at all for me. I tend to stay up really late anyway. Will roll and roam for a few hours, take a nap, and then hop back on.

I think I've narrowed my choices down to Warrior, Ranger and Elementalist. Still can't choose between those three, and I'm still wondering which race to roll: Human, Norn or Asura?

Edit: Maybe all three?

- Human Ranger
- Norn Warrior
- Asura Elementalist
