Guild Wars 2 Launch Date announced: August 28th, 2012

Played Engineer first beta. Mesmer the second and Elementalist the third. Liked them all, but now I have decided to play Necromancer as main lol.

Am I the only one who has no idea how to name characters, doesn't really care and just picks random names then never think about it again?

So you're the guy who's out there playing Desk, Son of Lamp, from the distant land of Staplermug.

If you have ever posted on this thread. Your mission from now till release is to keep this thread on the first page of Gaming Discussion!

Don't fail me!

Also to celebrate the release of Guild Wars 2, I think we should all take a screenshot of main characters (shoulders and up) and make that our avatars for a month. Who is interested in this?

Pretty sure it's against GAF policy to frivolously bump a thread, so I'd have to advise against that mission. However, I could see switching to GW2 Avatars for a month or so.

Awesome Write-up

Nice read. KegBrawl was definitely a load of fun, people should try it at least once.

There's also an interesting mechanic, in that sometimes, two kegs will spawn at once. This adds another layer of strategy, as you can focus on trying to score both of them, or focus on one and leaving the other unguarded. Near the end

Kegs spawn on a timer, not based on score or whether there is one on the pitch or not. In fact, when I played during BWE3, it was rare to only have one keg out; at one point, there were 4 players with kegs running around.

I couldn't see any way to organize a team. Unless you form a group and then talk to the KegBrawl master. And even then, there's no guarantee you'll be in the same game as the group you intend to play with.

Doesn't matter. Whoever gets matched up, one of the Mumble hosts moves them to a room together and off they, punching, kicking.

And swearing.

I still don't know what I will name my characters. Will probably be some simple stuff, but the fact that it can be 2 words makes me think it's not going to be a huge issue.

I am pretty sure this will be something that people will ask for, along with leadboards so they can see how well they are doing.

Did anyone get some good guardian time during BWE3? I was concerned with their ranged abilities during BWE2, did they improve anything? I would have checked myself, but my asura thief consumed what little time I had. :x

Are you referring to the range? If so they bumped the Scepter range to 1,200 which I believe is on par with every other class for the max range of any weapon.

What exactly were the range issues you had? I hadn't played one prior to BWE3 but did fall in love with it and it will be my main on launch.

If I can't think of a name... I think about what my character is/about and find the latin translation of it.

Indeed I am! I remember how short the scepter was in BWE1, then they improved in 2 but I still felt hitting people on a wall was a bit difficult. If its got 1200 range now, then that should ease my worries.

Geeze, I could see a range less than 1200 turning me off from the class. Otherwise it would be useless in WvWvW!

That's confirm 2 words? because my ranger in GW1 has 3 words, how will her name get carried over? since I want to use that name..

The reason people say 2 words is because there were no 1 word names in gw1. If you have the name in gw1, you have it reserved in gw2 from headstart to atleast a day after release... as long as you logged in gw1 recently.

GW2 has the same naming system that GW1 uses, but GW2 also allows one word names this time around.

In other words, your GW1 name and any name you can utilize will be carried over to GW2, but all possible single-word names are up for grabs as soon as the headstart servers go live on August 25.

Considering this game is cpu bound (hopefully less so by or soon after launch) what would be a good cpu to upgrade to.

Current specs:

Intel Q9400 stock
4GB ram
Old Intel 80GB SSD
ATI 6950 2GB video card

I would of course get more ram, 8-16gb depending on mobo and deals.

I know the i5 2500k or whatever is very popular, but its been out a while, just wondering if anything newer is worthwhile?

Hard to say at this point. I sit around 40fps on max settings with 1920x1080, an i5 at 4.2, 570 at 850/2000 and 16gb.

Some people with lower spec'd machines hit 60fps at 1080 and some people with higher spec'd machines can't hit 30fps. I'm sure more optimization will occur as I had a huge increase from BWE2 to 3. We should have a much better idea of what to expect at launch.

What were you using to measure your FPS? When it goes live I'd like to have a good idea how bad it's getting in WvW and what settings make the game run smoother.

more BWE performance impressions of non-Americans playing on US servers, stolen from SA:

For those wondering how it was for EU players on the NA servers, a few people have spoken up already but I'll add my feedback. The lag was practically unnoticeable, even in WvW with dozens of players in the immediate area. My advice would be to pick a home server/region based on the people who you'll be playing WvW with as the sole consideration. You can always guest over to any server in either region for PvE (or even sPvP I think?) if you have a friend there.
I'm no Euro but my location is further away from the servers than almost anywhere in Europe.
The latency was pretty much unnoticeable. I could still dodge everything in PvP, with no exceptions. Not once did an attack not go off or anything of the like because of latency. There was no noticeable input delay.
Hell, I participated in a few tournament 5v5s with some random group in Maguuma and we were talking about dodging those downed abilities that interrupt the finisher animation, as you basically have to react in less than half a second if you don't predict it. I had absolutely no trouble doing that whereas a couple people in my group, both from the US, did.

Excellent, this will bode well for those playing from opposite sides of the world. Great job Anet. We need to come up with a checklist of all the stuff they've implemented/accomplished to help make this the ultimate mmorpg.

Can we downplay the European server then? Make it less official? I think it would be pretty sweet to have all or most of the GAF guild on one server

Say something like in the official thread/community guild thread

Official Server - Who the hell knows
(All are encouraged to join, but if Non-North Americans are worried about lag, go to this server)

eh, the EU Gaffers on Gandara(?) seem to be pretty happy with their server, and there still might be lag issues, who knows

I don't think lag will be a major issue for most if not everyone. The real issue will be play times. Due to the different timezones, most euros will be going to bed by the time americans will be picking up. I think it would be awesome if they rolled on the US server, but if they don't they can at least guest with us when they are around to play.

Yea, I could definitely see most people (me included) wanting to play WvW when its busy, and that really wouldnt happen if Europeans rolled on a North American server

MSI afterburner and Fraps both work great but I usually stick with Afterburner for a few other variables like gpu load, temp, fan speed, etc.

I played at 1080p as well, I got from 30-50fps depending on effects and people. Not terrible, but I know my cpu is holding me back. BF3 for instance plays decently, but less than people with same gpu and better cpu.

Does anyone have a newer/better than the i5 2500k?

Pretty much. I tend to pick fantasy sounding names that are a variation of trin, and go on my merry way.

post-BWE3 class/race poll results

just look at all those Asura :D

I always wonder why people play humans. I avoid humans in every fantasy game. I'm a human in real life. Why would I play one in a game where I can be ANYTHING?

I'm actually surprised there are so many warriors, is it really that fun of a class to play?

It's not a bad class. Tonnes of adaptability and there isn't any stench of past MMO experiences with Warrior where it becomes a complete bore.

Not really surprised by Necro/Engi numbers though. Glad I am going with either of them at launch.

Damn sylvari more popular than I though they'd be.... reason to go norn..

Haha yeah. Despite enjoying the Asura and Sylvari, I am still set in stone regarding Norn and Charr choices - they are the most interesting races for me. Problem is I expect at least 50% of the Charr to be Engineer.

My wife thought the same way... until she saw that all the human females are essentially anime chicks.

Heh, was gonna play Guild Wars 1 again but I forgot my character names again. And I've reformatted since then so I don't have screenshots or anything like that. I don't want to contact support *again* for the same issue too especially since I don't have the original CD key. If I buy the game again on Steam can I somehow attach it to my old login?

Warriors are always among the most most popular classes, also they are probably the most-balanced profession at the moment (some skills are in fact too strong, they were the best single-target damage dealers in all BWEs)
