Guild Wars 2 Press Beta [Prepurchase Is Live]

The way I understand it, instead of a box, your code is printed on your receipt when you pre-purchase the game

Any of our Game Stop Gaffers can validate this? I don't mind dropping the money down, I'm just hesitant to give GS enough credit to actually partake in this day 1. Plus with my absolute hatred for everything GS, if there were any information about the Best Buy pre-purchase I would much rather buy from them.

No GAFer confirmation since it's still about 30 mins until the stores on the East Coast even open.

Here's the info on Best Buy:
According to the ArenaNet-authored pre-purchase retailers list on the Guild Wars 2 wiki, Best Buy has joined Gamestop, which makes them the only two brick-and-mortar outlets in the US that are selling physical copies of the standard edition and Collector's Edition. US players also have the option of pre-purchasing a boxed standard edition through Amazon.

I woke up this morning, drove the wife to work, and now that it's just about time to head over there, I'm having serious concerns about whether the CE is worth it. I know the Artbook will be impressive, but how many times am I going to flip through it? The statue will collect dust (assuming I can even find a place for it), the frame and prints will likely sit on the wall. I'm giving serious though to purchasing the DD straight from ArenaNet and using the money I saved on gems and such at launch. I'm sure I'll be able to find the Art book on Amazon or Ebay later and somebody will probably rip the Soundtrack disc and put it on Youtube or something if I want to listen to it.

I think I'm gonna go with the DD. I don't feel like giving any money to Gamestop and on launch day I won't have to waste time going anywhere. All of the extras are cool, but I think I'd rather blow that kinda money on character slots and such. Expect this opinion to change shortly, of course.

The @ncsoft thing worked after I already registered so i'm hoping there's a way to link it afterwards. Got in and purchased it no problems though. Bring on the BWE!

Amazon is a Pre-Purchase partner, just not for the Collector's Edition. If you Pre-purchase from them you'll get into the betas and headstart.
The Amazon item page says only about the headstart and nothing about the beta, but I'll take your word for it. I'll stick with my Amazon order since I used a promo coupon and got it for $42. I don't think I'm going to beat that at this point.

Heh. All you guys bitchin' about the price. You should have ordered it 3yrs ago when Amazon had it for $49. LOL

:( Was so excited to purchase this, but man, it's still hard to pay full price for a game, since I've been so spoiled for pc game discounts being so common.

How many days headstart is it? If it's 3, then you pre-purchased and should have Beta access. If it's only one, not sure what happened, you may want to call Amazon just to confirm. As previously mentioned in this thread, Amazon is usually really good about customer service.

Man... this launch has been a real clusterfuck. So much is up in the air in terms of Beta access, pre-purchase... Luckily, the launch seems to be the only thing wrong with the game at this point.

Just need to remind yourself; it's an MMO with no subscription. Yeah, it's expensive to start, but then you're done paying forever. How much money have you guys pumped into WoW or SW:TOR at this point in subscription fees alone? I know I payed for WoW for almost 5 years straight, plus expansions and a slew of character transfers. I'd figure about $600 easy.

Well, in their defense, this really doesn't count as a "launch." There's not even an announced release month

Yeah, true. The whole pre-purchase / beta thing, then.

And to be fair, MMOs are notorious for this kinda crap. I remember when Rift came out, there was a total clusterfuck then too, and a lot of people had to scan their receipt and deal directly with Trion.

Guess which store was involved with that one too?

Dumb question, does it charge your card right away or when it comes out, and do I have to prepurchase it on the computer I'm going to be playing it on?

ordered from my retail store for 20€ less than digital version. Kinda lame to see that getting the box is cheaper than without the box :/

Apart from others answer; I really hope they don't mind the computer I prepurchased it from.
Otherwise I will be gaming a lot from my work in the future.

Hmmm. I want beta access, but I'm not plopping down $60 for a game with no release date or even a release window.

I'll just play Tera and keep my eyes on it.

Bought and linked GW1 account. I am prepared.
Thankfully not too many fullprice purchases for me this year. Just Diablo 3 and Dark Souls PC after this.

Anyone get a CE from Best Buy yet? Their site doesn't seem to have it listed and I'm trapped at work, wondering if I should just bite the bullet and snag it off Gamestop's website.

I think they've said <6 months but it ultimately depends on how well the betas go. They're not going to release something that isn't ready.

If only Bioware/EA had done this with SWTOR. After that dreadful launch I have no issue waiting for a game to be thoroughly tested and fine tuned before a public release.

I've decided to try buying using CC and not paypal and ignoring the selected country (since it's the country I'm living in, but not the one on my CC) and the transaction went without problems.

Now for the beta events.

Just wanted to clear things up:

If you PRE-ORDER the game, a la you say you're going to buy it but you do not put money down, then you do not get access to betas and you only get a 1 day headstart.

However, if you PRE-PURCHASE the game, a la you buy the game in full before the release date, then you get access to betas and a three day head start, plus that Hero Band.

You have to buy the game in full from an ANet partner to be considered pre-purchase.

Also, mine is @plaync too. I think the earlier ones used @plaync, because I registered a trial account on my NCSoft account for my girlfriend maybe a year ago, and it was @ncsoft. But when I first registered (maybe a week after release), mine used @plaync.

Yep, this is the right mindset to have. There is a long history of failed MMOs that launched with bugs, with features missing, with unpolished mechanics... If you're interested in GW2, then you should be interested in it being the best game it possibly can be. That means waiting a bit.

If you're so eager to see what's going on and must play as soon as possible, then ANet has an option for you; buy it now.

Or, to quote Miyamoto; "A late game is only late until it ships. A bad game is bad forever."

I don't want another Vanguard, basically.

Soooo, can I walk into a GS today and put down cash and walk away with a code to enter? That would be ideal for me.

If by "Put cash down" you mean "Pay in full", then yes. Codes are for pre-purchase only. Just putting $20 towards it will not get you anything special.

Hmm just bought the CE from Gamestop's website, now says its a pre-order and Ill be charged when the game ships. Assuming this means Ill now get to spend my evening on the phone with their customer service to make sure it's correct.

Well, I'm off to Gamestop to get my CE pre-purchase done. Here's hoping they actually know about the whole thing.

So I just got off the phone with one of the employees...apparently he has no idea what a pre-purchase is.

I'll go into the store later and see if it's cleared up.

Yeah, I have a feeling Gamestop is seriously going to drop the ball on this one, all the more reason I'm thinking about not picking up the CE. That company is just not worth the BS.

I'm still refreshing Best Buy and GameStop's site from time to time to see if they list the CE prepurchase. GS seems to be slowly updating their listings this morning, while BB hasn't changed at all. I guess I'll wait and see. Worse comes to worst, I'll save like $90 with the standard edition.

Probably, and it wouldn't really surprise me. Why ArenaNet picked them out of all possible retailers is completely beyond me. Hopefully calling them later will get it sorted out.

So I prepurchased the game through buy.guildwars2.com, and registered it and inputted my GW1 account info. The confirmation page didnt really mention whether the linking to my GW1 account actually happened or not though. Is there some way to check?

So after realizing I have a ton of un-used gift cards for both Best Buy and Gamestop. Going Best Buy most likely. So is it correct that I should expect a "box" from them with the code, and not a code via email? Just so I get this sorted out after the debacle I had with the last few preorders from there.

I'm not sure what exactly is happening with GameStop. I think they're just massively uninformed.

I attempted to call the 1-800 number on their website and gave up. I've been on hold for well over 10 minutes and at this point, the store I'm headed to better have an idea.

Sent them an email request form thing asking what was going on with my order. I'm sure I'll get a response to it two months from now. Stuck at work so I can't call yet to talk to them directly, guess I'll be ready to just leave put my phone on speaker.

It's amazing that a company that does nothing but sell games, can flub up what will probably be one of the biggest releases of the year.

This GS situation is clearly an Activision Plan to foil and ruin the release of GW2! Joking aside, i hope GS get their shit together :/ is shameful the situation they are in.

In twitter news:

Ok seems we need to clear something up quickly, pre-purchase of #GW2 gives you a retail code (full game) for the #GW2 not a beta code! ^AT

@ke7enn that retail code gives you access to the beta ^AT

@reikakitami if you purchase digitally you will not need to purchase from a retail outlet as well :) ^AT

@GuildWars2 Just a curiosity, I ordered the CE from Zavvi. We just await an email from them now for our serial no. that we need to register?

@ganek_cystacae they will be sending you a box (that has your code in it) shortly :) ^AT

I'm too a bit disappointed with the choice of retailers in Sweden.

My favorite Internet store was not listed so I prepurchased from guildwars2.com even if it cost me about 9€ (actually 18€ as I will be purchasing my wifes too) more compared to the retailers.
But the same time I understand that ANet can't know which retailers in every country that have the best Customer Support.

I'm going to GS in a little bit to hopefully pre-purchase the CE successfully. Hopefully this will be a successful endeavor..
