Guild Wars 2 - Spring 2014 Feature Update (April 15th)

DarkD3 (Hardcore Setting), with some editing in post to bring out what I feel are their more defining properties. But half of the ones I have in my gallery are just pure DarkD3: https://plus.google.com/u/0/photos/106589101359067100697/albums/5962529737889875249

EDIT: here's a collection of completely undoctored shots, taken in-game with just DarkD3 running. Max settings, except for post-processing which I leave off since the bloom gets too much:

And can't forget [GAF]:

And just to be fair, a shot from World vs World (PvP) with the UI still on:

Yeah, it gets crazy up in there.

Man, I'm so excited and nervous for this update.

Excited because of all the great changes. Nervous because of all the sorting out I'll have to do afterwards.

So much awesome.

As a new player to GW2 (started 2 weeks ago), I don't think I can fully appreciate all the changes that are going on in this patch. I still don't know half of what there is to know about everything D:

Also, how do you take screens without the character model drawn?

When ESO went down for a bit the other day, I jumped on GW2 just out of curiosity (haven't logged in for months) and it felt... clunky. Not only is the combat tab target, but it's sluggish tab target.

I also remembered how much I hated being limited to certain skills for certain weapons.

The graphics, exploration, jumping puzzles, etc sometimes draw me back, but I generally only last a few hours at most before logging out for another few months. There are the underpinnings of such a fantastic MMO there, but the many little annoyances drive me away.

Not only is the combat tab target, but it's sluggish tab target..

I can honestly say that I've not used tab targetting in GW2 since launch. I look at what I want to attack, hit a skill button, and it attacks it. If I need to aim for something else in an emergency, I click it, but that's rare in itself. Perhaps it's just because Engineer is very AoE heavy, so I have to manually aim 90% of what I attack with, but GW2 never struck me as a tab-target MMO. Especially not compared to say, WoW. You *can* use tab targetting, but it's not required by any means.

I recommend this:

Check Use Free Camera.
Uncheck: Stop autoattacking on Target Change
Check: Autotargeting
Uncheck: Promote Skill Target.

Then just run around, and if you want to attack something, look at it (you'll know it's targeted because it's healthbar will appear above it's head), and go to town. Want to attack something else? Look at that instead and hit a skill button. If you're a melee character, you can fight multiple targets at once that way easily.

I treat GW2 entirely like an action game without tab targeting, and it's not let me down.

Though to be fair, I use a Razor Nostromo in my left hand, with movement on the left thumb, so I can access all my skills at once without having to move my hands at all.

The key, I think, is to use an MMO mouse or a gamepad. Suddenly, it becomes a very action oriented game, rather than any tab targeting. Also frees up your movement skills, allowing for better dodging, circle strafing, etc.

That's very true. I have jump and dodge on my right hand, using two thumb buttons on my mouse, and my left hand handles all skills and movement. This thing has been a godsend:

Not required, you can remap all the skills around your WSAD or EDSF easily enough, but I love having movement on my left thumb, like a gamepad.

Wow. I never thought about the check use free camera option. That would make the mouse dictate facing (like ESO, TERA, etc), right? That might actually be a game changer for me.

Thanks for the tip.

If you have Use Free Camera unchecked, the instant you let go of either LMB (just camera movement) or RMB (which moves the camera and aims your character where you're looking), the camera will "snap" back to behind your character. If you have Use Free Camera checked, the camera won't move unless you move it, so you can run in one direction and look behind you (useful for an Engineer since it means I can throw grenades behind me while running away).

I also move the camera position to the right of my character, so it's "over the shoulder", since the Charr are so large they can block things I need to see if I'm zoomed in and want an "eye level" view of things.

What pants is the norn with the bandana wearing? Center of the picture, the one in black with Duelist (Assassin PvP) chest armor.

I have no idea, but I'll pose the question in the official GW2 OT, perhaps whoever that is (I forget) can answer it.

Looks like i have a new control method to set tonight.

I still remember all the good / hilarious times with GW GAF. Dear god at some of those dungeon runs lol and us mindlessly Zerging all over the place in the pvp stuff.

Thinking of checking this back out. Have not played since a month or two after release. What is there to do for someone coming back to the game? I'd have no idea where to start.

They have made a ton of quality of life improvements, made dailies and such actually worth doing, added quiet a few activities, Fractels, world bosses worth a damn, etc. Crafting was boosted to 500, and with the new patch, we are getting megaserver, new dye/wardrobe systems, new ways of doing character traits, new traits altogether, and a bunch of other things.

Compared to release, it's pretty much a better game in every regard. I'd make a new character, join GAF, and work with us though the new content.

If you only played a month or so, you've barely played at all. If you've not hit 80, there's that to aim for (but no need to rush). You can finish your Personal Story, do the dungeons, then the explorable dungeon paths, try Fractals, play PvP or WvW, get your crafting up, and just... play. Guild Wars 2 is more about just playing, than chasing goals. You can give yourself goals to chase, but ideally the deal is to enjoy the moment-to-moment gameplay.

Failing that, there's always GAF guild and the Saturday Night Fever missions.

What is your account or in-game name? I can invite you to GAF guild, and people can help you out!

If you got a bunch of people to play with, I'm sure it'd be great. The major issue I've been running into recently (I only got to around level 29 at launch and reason I came back to it was because I got hired at ArenaNet) is that a lot of the mid level zones are empty.

But that will be fixed eventually with the mega server system.

Thanks for all the responses! Having a weird bug with quoting where it replaces every quote with another quote, so can't respond directly. I may just start a new character. If i tried to hop onto my engineer (who was max level) i might just be totally lost. I'm not sure what my in game name is, i'll have to look after i reinstall. If i end up playing more i'll definitely hop into the GAF thread and try to get into the guild.

Sadly not. I think it was just too buggy. But you can basically make your own by taking a lot from the same point but different angles, and using something like Microsoft ICE to stitch them together into a wide-angle panorama.

I remember playing the beta on my old laptop, maxing the graphics and resolution, and then taking screenshots galore. I was getting like 2 FPS but it was so worth it.

Sounds good. I bought it during the $25 sale and put maybe 8 hours into it, but the game does not seem to play nice with my old rig and its aging CPU. Looking forward to experiencing all the new changes when my new laptop comes in.

Anyone "tried" the new megaservers?

I'm on Sorrow's Furnace and Destiny's Reach is packed (nothing to do with the megaserver stuff, I'm sure) but did a quick tour of Kessex Hills and in 20 minutes found 2 people.

Probably still to early to tell, but I hope that this megaserver thing really makes the barren areas of the game a little more alive.

It's only for the 1-15 zones. Kessex is a 15-25 I think.

Check the starting areas, like Queensdale or Caledon, or Metrica.

The OP says that the Megaserver will be working with Hubs and PVP first, then other areas later this year.

Posting over here for more advice,
Elementalist or Mesmer?!

Ele has some interest stuff, like all the self-combo attacks, and with four elements for each weapon, it's a ton of spells to learn and master.

Mesmer is odd at the start, but pretty awesome in late game, with all the reflects and such.

Actually, they changed the rollout:

UPDATE: The megaserver system will first be enabled in the Heart of the Mists and then progressively rolled out to the rest of the open world, starting with maps with lower populations. The order and speed of the roll-out will be based on the data we collect.

Not sure what maps it's actually live on.

Might be a dumb question, but does GW2 have controller support yet?

Not officially, but GAF provides: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=73009376&postcount=1569

It is just in the PvP lobby zone right now.

Didn't know they had changed the rollout. Hoping to see it world wide sooner rather then later, to give more life to some of the more sparsely populated zones.

Have they changed it so you can be more customisable with your character's skills, or are things still locked to weapon and four other slots that are also locked to certain skills? Its what annoyed me the most coming from Guild Wars, and I wish they had of just taken the original but polished it a bit.

Also, is there anything to do at end game yet like raids or something?
