Guilty Gear Xrd: Sign introduces DLC character Elfert.

I can't get behind launching a game with a miniscule character roster and then fragmenting the community with DLC characters. This game feels half baked with half the roster missing. No Jam, no Baiken, no Johnny.... you can instead enjoy paying $10 for DLC characters.

I was excited for this at first, hoping they'd reveal more characters as time went on. I can appreciate that adapting a new engine is difficult, but it's not like they haven't had plenty of time to develop the game. I'd have been able to look past that and support the game had they not chosen to include DLC characters. I'll wait a year for the inevitable #Reload XX Slash Overture Accent Core Plus edition with a respectable character roster.

She's free

You used the wrong one!

Haha, I actually saw that one in the search results page. Now I'm wondering why I didn't use that instead.

She's free

Not according to the wording. Sounds like day one buyers will get her for free and everyone else will have to pay, similar to Flame Iori from the Japanese KOF launch. Which didn't even carry over to the US as we had him and two other DLC characters on launch.

Early buyers of Guilty Gear Xrd: Sign will get Elfert free. Otherwise, she can be purchased for 800 yen.

Fragmenting may have been poor choice of word. What I meant is that it's important to be able to try every character and learn their options to know what and how to fight against them. This problem becomes compounded when there are several characters that you can't access because they are behind a paywall. I am all for DLC but it really needs to stay the fuck out of some genres. Adopting a fighting game post launch, after people have had experience with it is hard enough without worrying about having to pay for characters beyond the main game.

I like that they're going with the wedding/bridal theme for Elphelt's attacks as well. I actually can't think of any other fighting game character that has the same theme.

I don't think that the people saying she doesn't look like a GG character realize that's what actually makes her fit in the most with the rest of the cast.

If you look at GG's cast you'll notice that most if not all of them vary wildly in terms of appearance and theme. There are commonalities in terms of clothing/accessory motifs but outside of that you can't confuse any of the two (except maybe the silhouette's of Ky/Robo-Ky and Sol/Holy Order Sol).

Sol is different from Venom who's different from May who's different from Potemkin who's different from Slayer who's different from Chipp who's different from BEDMAN who's different from I-No who's different from ABA who's different from Johnny who's different from Bridget who's different from ZATO who's different from Justice who's different from Dizzy, who's different from [insert rest of cast here].

Despite their intentions those saying that Elphelt doesn't look like a Guilty Gear character are giving her the biggest compliment that they possibly can.

Developing on a new engine is a complex task. I think it's unreasonable to expect them to bring over every character they've made so far in previous games for the first release. Also she will be free for release in addition to being able to play against characters you don't have so fragmentation isn't an issue.

The character doesn't really scream guilty gear to me, even when I try to look at the singular components of her design. It's ok to me even if you think she does look like a Guilty Gear character. They are only opinions after all. Just because my opinion differs from your's doesn't mean that I think that there wasn't any anime tropes in Guilty Gear or that all anime looks the same. In fact I think that the anime look in some of the new designs are a little too different for Guilty Gear (the very basis of this argument). How can I think that all anime looks the same yet say that something here looks too different for my tastes when compared to the old characters, thus recognizing that there are different styles of anime?

So what exactly are your arguments as to why you don't think she looks like a Guilty Gear character, to counteract my own (and those of others in this thread)? Do you just disagree with all of them? And if so, care to explain why?

Adachi in Persona 4 Arena Ultimax will be a free DLC for the first week or so.
The same will apply to this character, as per my understanding.

I am not expecting every character to last throughout the series. But going from 21 characters in #Reload and 23 in Accent Core.. to 15 in Xrd is a significant loss. Again, I'd look past that if I wasn't forced to buy this day one or have to spend $8? for every DLC character they decide to announce.

Having to buy day 1 or week 1 is not a big difference. If someone was interested three months down the line it would be a major deterrent to have to pay more money to get the DLC characters. One character may not be a big deal but this a new trend in fighting games that I don't like. Like I mentioned, KOF did this with three DLC characters.. so at which point do you start feeling like you are buying an incomplete game?

If by arguments you mean clothing, pieces of clothing, hairstyle, colour, weapon etc. then I got none. The individual elements pertaining to her design that you listed are all there and support your argument. I meant that despite those things, I just get the same feeling that I got when I first saw BlazBlue. I find it hard to articulate a detailed reason for my opinion and that may mean that my opinion is worthless in an argument, but thats okay because I'm not here to persuade others to think like I do. Just voicing my opinion. Granted, it is a bit of a knee jerk reaction opinion before we actually see AND hear the character in action.

You need to live with the fact that in this gen, any game will have DLC, BE IT for cut content or incomplete stuff, or otherwise.

In the case of this character, and the fact that this game is releasing on Sony systems, one simply needs to get the character off the PS Store while she is free and blamo, they can play as the character or just have her for completence sake, whenever they get the game.

As a Jam main, I'm eagerly waiting for her to come out.

Regardless, from what I've tried of GGXrd, Millia and Faust are REALLY fun to use and they're quite good as well. Those two will make do until Jam comes back.

Yeah, same here was really hoping she'd atleast make the home version, looks like I'll have to main Millia for a while while I wait.

I don't really mind the practice. I feel like paying for an arcade perfect port and all the story content, training mode and base online features is worth my 60 dollars.(or in the case of the PS3 version, 50)

Anything outside the scope of the development of that package I don't really mind paying for. Providing that content for free I view as a bonus.

Let's be honest, who hasn't preordered a japanese copy already? At least she's free for early adopters. Could have been worse.

Not me.

Waiting for concrete US release details then I'm preordering that version.

If there's a big gap between JP and US release hopefully I can split the cost of a copy with other people and gameshare. In that case I'll just pay the 800 yen for Elf.

How will fragment the community. Plus, this is a fighting game running on new hardware. A small team like this shouldn't be expected to have a roster in their fighting game. ASW isn't like Capcom, Namco, or NetherRealm to offer a 20+ roster right off the bat in a new fighting game.

I for one am GLAD they aren't playing it safe with the roster. Same with MKX
offing a ton of classic characters from their cast due to the story.

I can only see myself playing as Sol and Chipp Zanuff.. It's hard for me to play other fighting games that isn't SF because of the way some companies design characters. If the 2 I listed were more ridiculous looking I would of passed like I did with every fighting game that isn't SF.. I even get the shit MK games if they have someone I like.

What are you talking about? Only three characters are new for this game, including the DLC one. I am not complaining about returning cast, but let's not pretend this is some re-imagining of the franchise.

Comparing ASW to other game studios is irrelevant. Besides.. some of these comparisons make no sense. Although NetherRealm has a lot of ex-Midway staff, the studio itself is young with only a handful of fighting game titles under their belt. ASW is a publisher and studio that has dozens of titles in their portfolio and have been around since the early 90s. Again, this doesn't really matter in the end. I oppose day one DLC characters from all studios, large or otherwise.

Isn't there still not really a US release date for this ? Even if the same rule holds true - buy the game in the first run of copies and get this character for free or wait a few months buy it cheap and spend 10 bucks for her. That doesn't sound bad at all really.

I'll admit that I'd love to just buy the game when it's "complete" but then I'd be waiting 3 years to play it and most people will have probably moved on to something else by then so you can either go buy it when it's new and popular but missing a few characters or skip it entirely.

i totally get where you're coming from, though what about axel, slayer and zato? they have pretty mellow designs even compared to chipp and sol

Just play ac. When a new game comes out I expect new characters.

This really can't be said enough. Everyone bitches at no veteran characters when they forget that this is supposed to be a new game for a new audience. ASW already said that they eventually want to bring over all the characters to Xrd, it'll just take time.

It's all good man. Like I already said, I'm getting this the second I can without breaking any laws. A few new characters that I don't love are not nearly enough to turn me from buying a game that I have been waiting for so many years. All my mains are already in the game. I'm just saying my own subjective opinion about the new characters out loud. I get it. Since I've mostly been negative in this thread because of my negative feelings about the new characters it might have come off as me dissing the game.

I absolutely expect to see some new characters in a whole new entry in the series. Since some of the new characters are not aesthetically pleasing to me I would rather see "tried and true" characters in their stead. There will be plenty of players who will like the new characters and the game is a little fresher with them, regardless of my preferences. I actually wanted a new character in this: the guy in your avatar. Hope it happens.

I wanted more new characters in Xrd but that is a really, really poor design.

I'm not even going to pull the "GG isn't anime!" card, it totally is anime. But different "style" or no that is one boring, generic, uninteresting design. Arc can do way better than that.

I'll go with Ramlethal, because she looks like the human version of Taokaka :3

Btw Yamanaka said her romanizationed name is Elphelt
"帰宅。スペルは Elphelt です。"

I am not liking the new character's appearance. But I hope she is fun to play. Maybe I will finally use a female character in GG.

Any chance to see the PS3 version in action anytime soon?

I know I'm part of a minority here, but with no PS4 yet this is possibily the only one cross gen title I'm genuinely interested in... I keep reading for it to be 720p compared to 1080p on PS4 - as it was the only real difference between the two versions - but I need to see some actual footage. I wouldn't bother to mess around with a half-assed port (see Titanfall on the 360), still I'm totally eager to play the game when it comes out.

Maybe your mind has been warped by MvC3 but 15 is by no means a "minuscule" roster.
I find it especially funny coming from someone with a Last Blade avatar. How did this group of 25 or so developers could not make more than 15(or 16!) characters?!!

I didn't like slayers and Zatos fighting style. I think chip going to be my main, he looks too fun.

The game will support cross platform play, so in terms of gameplay it'll be identical to the PS4 version. They'll probably cut down resolution and AA.

Speaking of the BB/GG characters design gate(;p sorry), ignoring their play style, which BB character/s do you guys think would fit in a GG(excluding Ragna and Jin)?

I'm calling Bullet, Hazama and Azrael.

Arakune is crazy enough to be in GG.

That's what I keep reading and I want to believe. I'm just really looking forward to see some actual footage. :)

Conceptually it's the other way round, in that both the arcade and PS3 versions run at 720p, and the PS4 version gets a resolution bump to 1080p.
