We've never actually seen how he'd fare without Reiji. He's strong, but not necessarily good enough to win the championship again.

I'm guessing they switched to the three-man team because Sei was just owning everything.
I got chills when build burning gundam showed up. I knew Sei wouldnt just build a freaking generic fodder suit dom. I couldn't care less about the other parts of the show, and the team dynamic irks me. It has all the trappings of an annoying drama, two guys one girl. The only time I enjoyed that trope was during Adachis Touch and H2.
And I'm really looking forward to a theme as perfect as the Meijin Yuuki's first appearance in episode 4 of S1.

Sei sucked at piloting, he was the builder. It was always Reiji fighting.
Either that or China made him copilot BearGuy with her.

Errr, did you not watch the episode where they fought each other and the last one where Reiji left it to Sei to fight Meijin? Dude was world class by that point. He was just holding back so much because he didn't want to wreck his gunpla in battle. Plus he's got dem Gundam stories to fall back on, hurr.
He was introduced in the last episode epilogue as the 7th champion, not winning the 8th, 9th, etc. Second, that dude from the Plastic Model Club said they've only had one champion at their school since (i.e. Sei). For all we know, he could've lost in those qualifiers that they ended the first show on, haha.
