Half-Life² Will Be 20 Years Old Next Week (Anniversary Update Coming Soon)

And Valve will do fuck all about the sequel because they are already swimming in money due to Steam's success.

GabeN is too busy managing his fleet of yachts to have the motivation to make HL3.
Valve has been on a hiring spree and even before that there were a lot of signs pointing towards two Half-Life projects being in the works. Time will tell but I firmly believe that Valve want to do another Half-Life 'flatscreen' experience and we'll get it sooner rather than later.

It's called scientific notation.
Did you miss the part where we play as a scientist, trying to save the world, in a science fiction scenario of an alien invasion.
I only remember being experimented on from room to room.

I first played the Xbox version. It was hard to believe that such a big game could run on the original Xbox, but it did, and I have fond memories of playing that port despite performance dips from time to time (especially when there were a lot of explosions).

In 2007 I bought PC and I was replaying "organge box" many times over the years.

FPS Boost the Xbox version, you cowards! It's already native 4K.
I played it in December/January on XSX, but yeah, would've loved for this one to have been FPS boosted.

I wish Valve would hire a porting studio (maybe Nightdive 👀) and re-release all their older games on modern consoles.

I know they did the Portal 1&2 ports for the Switch two years ago, but c'mon, there's so much more they could do here...

In my dream last night I pictured the anniversary update to be HL2 fully remastered but with Alyx assets and running on Source 2.

I'm putting it out there in the ether. Please Valve.

All the Half-Life games packaged for PS5 would get me more interested in actually getting one than pretty much anything else on the horizon right now......what a sad state the industry is in.

At Half-Life’s 25th anniversary the game was free. The documentary on its development was amazing though.

I’m hoping for more, but it might just be that.

Me too. It was definitely rough in places but still amazing it ran.

Playing HL2 in VR again felt like the first time all over again.

So expect an update on Thursday, Friday or otherwise the beginning of next week. Signs indicates that it's going to be a bigger update compared to the Half-Life 1 anniversary update. Tyler also mentions he's almost ready with his Half-Life 3 video as well.

I was 17 back then, living with my parents, doing bad in school and going through the obligatory emo phase; blast bands like Linkin Park, Papa Roach and Korn on my off brand CD walkman.
I was same age, also living with mom and sister, but doing well enough at school and no emo phase, instead of Linkin Park I listened to Prodigy and NIN (which I still do..) and because I am a man of culture, the day HL2 launched I went and played Vampire Bloodlines which launched same day and was a better game :p

But as soon as I finished it I moved on to HL2 which was fantastic too of course. CP Violation is a masterpiece, the game's atmosphere and soundtrack is 10/10 and those water shaders still amaze me 20 years later. Not many shooters are better than HL2 tbh.

hl2 killed my interest in the series

original hl2 release date comes and goes without a word from valve. trash
then some dude jacks a beta, throws it on the World Wide Web, and the game sucks
finished game finally comes out and its not much better

victim of my own expectations i suppose--preferred the tight, claustrophobic, mysterious, bloody, lab-creepin' hl1 experience
instead got some dumb euro-slop adventure and b-grade wannabe matrix crap.

great physics for the time though

It still boggles my mind that they never wrapped the episodes up. I really have to wonder why they just stopped work on the series. I get that Steam is huge money maker and resource hog. I would think because of that they could have team of people working on it as a passion project.

That script summary that was leaked years ago indicated that episode 3 was also gonna end on a cliffhanger. In fact, I don’t think they were ever gonna conclude the story. Each game would set up the next one.

The rumors that have come across indicated that they pulled resources from episode 3 to finish other games. Apparently they were very also very aware of what happened to Mass Effect 3.. So they may have thought it was better to bow off the stage on top.

Trying not to get hyped, but hearing about dismemberment, changes in enemy behaviors & animations with damage, and more has me excited. As much as I love HL2, it'd be so amazing for 3 or whatever comes next to be more like HL1 in terms of vibe, which I feel is fair to say. Considering it sounds like Xen would be playing a much larger role than it did in 2.

Remade assets and RTX up the ass.

Looks amazing. Wonder if this is compatible with the VR mod. 👀

No I don't think so? This is a thing nvidia are doing with a random studio made of fan teams. Nothing to do with all the work on a new branch of HL2 valve have been updating the past few months.
Uh, so we are getting even more free stuff? Niceee.

Waiting for this update to play it again

yeah it's good and all but it's still just a mod.
Kinda feels like a SKIN over original game. and it's just made by modders.
I would love real valve remake of this and on ps5 pro too.
Or at least any hl2 release on pro lol. ON DISC

Sounds like we're the same age OP. Born in 1987 here. Remember that year very fondly. I had an ATi 9700 Pro and was able to play the game very easily on my 17" 1024x768 CRT. It was so mind-blowing at the time and has held a special place in my heart ever since. Looking forward to the RTX Remix release to replay it with a fresh new coat of paint. I just miss this era of gaming badly, the simplicity and focus on actually having fun above all else. That and it felt like the developers were actually trying to make something new and exciting, and not just push out another product to make money. Ah well.

If you want to get into the Source mood then the devs behind the excellent In Sound Mind have just released their original mod Nightmare House as a separate title on Steam! I've never played it myself but am about to and it comes packed with all of the content they made for it over the years (including a sequel).

  • The Full Package: Combining the original “Nightmare House 1”, its sequel “Nightmare House 2”, and “The Lost Files” into one accessible complete game. For free.
  • Legacy of Horror: An old school horror game that became a cult classic. Rather than cowering from the terrors, fight back against the jump-scares. If you've yet to experience classic Source horror - this is probably the best way to begin.
  • Lost And Confused: You are trapped in Nightmare House, with a haunting ghost following your every step. She’s out to get you, but you must get out of here. Never Lose Hope.
  • Auto Scare System: Engineered to catch you off-guard, this system delivers dynamic scares to ensure you're never truly safe.

They're also hard at work on Nightmare House Reimagined which I'm very hyped for as it'll be their next proper game after the aforementioned ISM.

And if you want straight up Half-Life 2 vibes then just give In Sound Mind a try. It's such an underrated gem and takes many pages out of Valve's work in terms of gameplay mechanics, level design, etc. It's become one of my favourite games of recent years.

Yeah that would be good ,
But Good luck with that!!
Valve are barely making a full fledged games these days, let alone a remake.

Apart from Deadlock, CS2, the many many hires of experienced AAA devs in the past few years and the abundance of evidence Half Life 3 is well on the way. Yeah Valve don't do much. Also they have way less employees than most AAA studios.
