Halo 2 Online isnt that fun.

fact fact fact! no opinions for anyone! just facts!
halo 2 = sex with 16 women at the same time and then 12 other women joining in afterwards! how good will halo 3 be? can you fit 120 women into one house? I think not

Then Halo 2 also has the part where the 16 women want to talk about their feelings after sex, right? So you're admitting it's not perfect.

As opposed to Halo 1, which the reflex-impaired like to tout as 'strategically paced' because it gave them an (over-)abundance of time to think (and aim). :p 'Halo, the FPS slow enough for everyone to play!' And now Halo 2 actually forces players to think and shoot quickly, so suddenly it's a step backward. Give me a break.
Yes, it is a step backward in my opinion. H2 MP feels like a generic FPS with the Halo license. It's like it wasn't even made by the same crew that handled Halo 1 MP. Thanks for bending to conformity, Bungie.

I hate it when people try to equate the fast pace of a title like UT with an inherent lack of depth. Just because the game is too fast for you to strategize on your feet while dodging and shooting at fast-moving targets doesn't mean that everyone else is running around mindlessly. If you're looking for a game where the player who has the better reflexes doesn't have a significant advantage, forget FPS's and go play Risk or something. :p
I'm not sure why not having twitch reflexes is a sin, but whatever. Not every game has to play like the others. Halo 1 is unique because it took a more realistic approach to the usual run-n-gun thing and pulled it off well. Halo 2 pretty much kills that with the speed increase and other balance issues. It's a generic game with a well-executed wrapper -- yes, the Halo universe is cool, Master Chief rocks, but this does not feel like a Halo sequel should.

However, more than MAF can share MAF's opinion. I don't think Halo 2 online is fun either. It's been UT'd up, it's way more arcadey than Halo 1. Everything is too fast..

that's been my issue with halo 2's multiplayer too

I spawn in. There's a VERY good chance I spawned in front of someone instead of behind. They get the drop. Another wait. Spawn back in, all clear. Gear up head out. Some guy comes jumping around all fucking crazy like on top of my head from nowhere and kills me. More wait. Spawn. Sniper. Wait. Spawn. Sniper. Wait. Spawn. In front of someone. Wait. Spawn. See two people fighting, get the scrap kill and nail the guy standing. Get sniped. Wait. Spawn. Rocket Launcher guy from above, dead. Wait. Spawn. Sword guy LUNGE dead. Wait Spawn. Gear up. Get one honest kill. Accidently fall off edge. Wait. Spawn. Listen to nerd sneers thanks to XboxLive Voice Chat as the same guy guns you down for the 5th time. Wait. Spawn. Link Dropped, Resync, wait wait wait, random cussing from various members of our stupid society. Back in Awesome. Sniper. Wait....

so you're complaining that you suck at the game? I know how you feel... i started playing CS:Source recently and get my ass handed to me with a side dish of ownage all the time :/

I would have to agree with you. Maybe it is my own fault for having such high hopes of Halo 2 being the best online game out there. I can't put my finger on the reason I don't enjoy it but I just know I don't. In the end, Halo 2 came up way short for me.

No there isn't. Maybe on Foundation, but I almost never get spawned when an enemy is in my section, and I've actually NEVER seen an enemy spawn in my screen.

Some guy comes jumping around all fucking crazy like on top of my head from nowhere and kills me.
Maybe you should try looking at your radar. There's no way anyone can jump all fucking crazy on top of your head without you knowing he's there before he does it.

More wait. Spawn. Sniper. Wait. Spawn. Sniper. Wait. Spawn.
Hey, here's a tip. Don't go where you just went and got sniped. Twice.

Wait Spawn. Accidently fall off edge.
HALO 2 SUCKS!!!!

Wait. Spawn. Listen to nerd sneers thanks to XboxLive Voice Chat as the same guy guns you down for the 5th time.
If only there were a mute feature, or a way you could put people you enjoy playing with on some kind of list for later reference... these "friends"... if ONLY MAF, IF ONLY, F%CK U MICRO$FT!!! Thank God no nerds play online computer games!

Wait. Spawn. Link Dropped, Resync, wait wait wait, random cussing from various members of our stupid society. Back in Awesome. Sniper. Wait....
Eject game. Put in case. Get in car. Wait. Car stalls. Rev engine. Drive to EB. Refund refused. Push over magazine rack. Trip over said rack. Blame shoes for walking into magazine rack.

I agree with MAF now, I was really good at Halo 1, I expected 2 to be better, its more dumbed down, and those stupid newbies who kill you in no less that 2 seconds...bullshit.

Wait, Bungie sped the multiplayer up? I've only played the single player thus far, and couldn't wait to get back into the strategic multiplayer battles. What the hell were they thinking? The slow pacing in the multiplayer of the first title was a refreshing change from the arcade-style Timesplitters or Unreal Tournament games.

Seems a lot of people who didnt get in GAF clan arent having a very good time.

Meanwhile almost everyone in GAF clan, or in any decent size clans loves it.

maybe we need to get volunteers for an exchange program to show these people what playing the game is like when you have friends.

I tend to agree with Mike Works. It sounds like you just suck at the game. Sorry to hear it.

We played a pretty cool MP variant last night with three guys. Here are the rules. They were posted by Matt Keil at Qt3 and it turned out to be a lot of fun.

It's called Cut Throat. Every kill is a point, every death subtracts a point, every suicide subtracts two points, Bonus Points for medals are turned on. No shields, shotgun as starting weapon, random secondary weapon. Map weapons remain default, although I suggest turning off the Ghosts, as they can be annoying. First to five points wins a round, first to two rounds wins the game.

Essentially it creates a see-saw effect that forces you to survive longer if you want to keep your hard-earned points. Play it on a small map like Midship with maybe four (friendly) people and you'll learn how to dodge, weave, and aim in a hurry. It leaves very little room for error, and the shotgun as default starting will teach you about range. Lack of shields means that every hit counts, and where you hit counts even more. I've gotten to the point where I can snipe on the move without zooming fairly accurately, mostly from playing Cut Throat all the time.

hey, its wrong to hate halo now .. or even dislike it ..

try picking on Echoes or any Nintendo game/console/shit, and you'll be a HERO

this board is infected by IGNers..

Bah... I'm a big Nintendo fan. I've played a lot of both games and they're both awesome. I'd give people grief over hating either one.

I'm getting sick of playing the same shit over and over. I don't care it it's in an unranked game, LET ME CHOOSE WHERE I WANT TO PLAY, BUNGIE, YOU ASSHOLES.

"But you can make a private party"

Yes, which takes like an hour if you want to get 16 players going on Coagulation.

play CS: Source ;)

No, MP speed is the same.

How come there are many people here who say the opposite? Is it because they are playing with a ton of people on small maps? I really hope the general pace of the multiplayer remains the same.

Although my experience with Halo 2 is limited at best, I actually prefer Star Wars: Battlefront more online. I think it's the feeling of actually being in the middle of a larger battle more than anything.

It's fanastic when you can get your team to work together and take points all at once in a full on assault.

Halo 2 is nowhere near Unreal Tournament game speed. I usually wait for a vehicle on Coagulation because it takes like 2 minutes to walk on foot to the other base.

Lot of dunce talk as per usual. I certainly don't think it's perfect, but it is great fun at times and most PC multiplayer is way overrated. I prefer the custom games and I've yet to play at a strange hour where someone on my friends list wasn't available. I'm not crazy about ranked games when I play by myself simply because there's usually no motivation to play as a team or if you're playing for yourself everyone hides toward the second half of the match. Shades of PC or any other game though.

I don't know, I'm not that great at it because I'm inconsistent with my twitch skills (occasionally great, often too slow) but some of the complaints make no sense. You almost never spawn near an enemy. I don't understand how someone who plays other shooters dies quite like the MAF story...no matter what shooter your playing, you have to pay attention to your placement on a map or environment. I mean, is it too fast or too slow? All of the above as it pleases the complaint? Personally, I like that it depends on the mode your playing.

Man I tried CS: Source last night for the hell of it. I can't believe people still play this. It doesn't even look much better with the Source engine. Ugh. I remember having fun with this game 3-4 years ago when I played on the same damn maps.

This is what I think of when I start considering firing up Live! and playing Halo 2:

First off: Dont like the people.

Second: Everyone apparently plays more than me, and rank matchmaking is useless in CTF games. I can be sure to be ranked with people who are a lot better than me, and will provide a match with few returns, yet there is the chance of a 'good game' right?

Third: Wrong. The game moves in instants. The multiplayer gameplay, even the 'strategic' game modes have been cultured for the quake 3 WWE football player surfer jock screaming punk redneck urban goths all of which I am not.

Fourth: Ill end up feeling bad about the 20 minutes I wasted watching my respawn count tick by between unsatisfying encounters.

Fifth: I could be playing something else.

This has to be the funniest quote I've read in a while. But I can see your third point. Maybe you should try playing with people you know. I know enough people from various forums that I hardly venture out of my circle. Most people in ANY online game (console or PC) are jerks. I play with people who are cool, I've met a lot of cool people and jerks as well. This game has a huge following so expect more casual idiots (jerks). This is why I never purchased SOCOM for the PS2. Halo has some cool people, but your ending up with a lot of bad apples. I can understand how this frustrates you to no end.

Maybe you just sucked at Halo 1 but thought you were good because you kept winning against your little brother and his friend....

I've personally encountered respawn situations like MAF has recounted. His "I spawn in..." post sounds almost exactly like something I could have written of my own experiences in Halo 2 at times. And, yes, I fully acknowledge that I'm an average FPSer at best, much for the same reason that you say you are as well. But, here again, I'd voice the same sentiment that MAF did earlier - I suck at other multiplayer shooters as well but could point to several others I like better than Halo 2 multiplayer, with friends/clan or without.

Isn't there a website that shows how many people are playing Halo 2 live? I think time will show if Halo 2 online is really fun as the numbers will stay up, but if it drops like every other Xbox online game, then people must be getting bored with it.

I haven't tried it online yet, and probably never will since I have a modded box and don't have Live... at least the single player game has been good so far (probably about half way done).

Over the last 24 hours...

Unique Players: 306,496

Definitely good numbers for a weekday. Will have bigger numbers tomorrow.

Xbox Live Most-Played Games
Posted by Frankie at 11/23/2004 10:10 AM
Last week's Xbox Live rankings (most-played games on the Xbox Live service) shouldn't come as too much of a surprise, but it's worth noting that Xbox Live activity is up overall as a result of you know what. Which is cool for everyone. Thanks to Major Nelson from Xbox.com for collating this list.

1 Halo 2
2 Tom Clancy`s Ghost Recon 2
3 Rainbow Six: Black Arrow
4 ESPN NFL 2K5
5 Madden NFL 2005
6 Counter-Strike
7 Project Gotham Racing 2
8 Need for Speed Underground 2
9 ESPN NBA 2K5
10 Dead or Alive Ultimate

edit: making a new post for this... I see a few things that need to be discussed ;)

Halo 2 online is fun, but I would hardly call it incredible. The BF series, some of its mods, and Planetside are all far superior online FPS games IMO.

I am starting to wonder of your playskill. Have you beat the game on easy mode? Try and move up to normal. Then you have Heroic which will teach you a thing or two. It gets pretty intense.

Also if you want to make things easier for yourself you should put on auto aim. Something like that. All it does is help you out slightly with your aim when an opponent moves away from your field of view. Your aim tracks him slightly in the general direction.

Even when I started out online I never got beat so badly as you have described. And most games do not have disconnection and reconnection problems. Only occasionally does this ever happen. You are greatly exageratting all your negative points. No one gets killed so badly in a single game like that... Well at least I didn't think it was humanly possible. A good tip is to not throw a grenade at a guy who is in your face shooting at you. All the grenade will do is bounce off his chest and you are stuck being shot at. Another so called pro tip is to shoot members of opposing teams. If you are blue then dont shoot the blue guys. Pretty cool huh
