Switch 2 Hardware Needs Day 1 Online Update to Boot Games

I understand people being mad at this, but it's highly likely Nintendo finalized the hardware way before the software and this is the price to pay for having a good supply at launch. It's not a big deal in my opinion, since it's a one off.

The fact they're releasing the firmare on launch day or closer is to avoid shit like this from happening (people getting the console ahead of time and start revealing stuff they might not want to reveal yet, for whatever reason)

If it affects only Switch 1 games it sucks but it is it selling people a console that is a brick if the servers go down, but still we know the power of BC for people's libraries and they are not all digital.

All in all it is still not great in terms of game preservation overall… but another case where Mandatory Online activation is something in this forum likely many in this thread have made noises against and now without cracking a laugh they mention Wii U as a good precedent for doing this and kind of try to justify this or hand wave it away. It would be quite funny if people railed against the mandatory online activation of the Blu-Ray add on for PS5 DE and PS5 Pro and were making excuses for this 😂.

Sure, best way to show this to people is for the next batch of consoles to be sold to customers with no mandatory OS update required.

I do wish console manufacturers were better prepared to minimise the occurrence of this happening. See how Apple handles it nowadays: https://www.entrepreneur.com/busine...ice-updates-iphones-in-the-box-picture/471896

Yeah, we can only guess for now, but I'd expect the newer batches to have the updated firmware and be able to play right away.

If not, then they are doing it purposefully to collect device data.
I wonder whether the games at launch will have the required firmware update on the card.

The Apple strategy is interesting, but I doubt any console manufacturer will bother doing anything like that.

Oh Nooo, now all the people without internet are going to cry on youtube and gaming forums…

What am I missing? Why is this news? Who does this impact?
We heard sometime ago that Nintendo may want to brick your console if they find out you are using it illegally (play pirated games, etc)

This woule 'do' the trick - force the console remotely to reboot to initial firmware and stop it from receiving this patch to stay unusable - and may even be legal. The console is technically working (the hardware like screen or joycons), but the software doesnt

Well, they did updated their compatibility list stating that a lot of unplayable games would receive a patch in the future to work.

But it does sound like it's more of Nintendo trying to control when everyone will have access to the console, which sucks.

What's your logic of thinking it's bad that Nintendo wants everyone to enjoy launch day without too many spoilers in advance?

Do you believe a single word out of that sentence?

Nintendo just want any criticism to be silenced until launch, when they will sell most of their consoles and when it most likely failures are bound to happen.

There are plenty of ways to block spoilers these days, for people that actually want that.

Why is this incorrect title still not updated?

There is no proof of switch 2 games. I would be suprised of this is required. This is only about switch 1 games due compatible layer it uses

Pretty obvious it's an anti piracy measure. Can't use the console until it's patched to the latest version. I imagine it'll stay that way past the launch.

"Needs update to boot a game" is just a clickbait thing, I don't get why Wario64 wrote that, it's about booting a Switch 1 game on the Switch 2, which has to emulate some parts of the Switch 1, so if the firmware is old, it needs an update that current Switch 1 carts does not contain.

As it looks like there was no Switch 2 games tested on Switch 2, they can only try Switch 1 games and they can't work yet, that's all.

Also a leak show a Switch 2 console with the 19.0.0 firmware, which was released in October 2024 on Switch 1.
It also looks like both consoles will have the same firmware number, latest is 20.1.0 (released yesterday on Switch 1) and seen on the Switch 2 in a Nintendo Today video.
