Halo 3 Multiplayer Official Thread

I know this has probably been done about a million times already, but hey, I never got the chance to voice my ultimately useless opinions about each of the Halo 3 maps. Keep in mind this seems to chance weekly for me, as more maps grow on me, while others continue to piss me off, but whatever, here we go.

Awesome:
Construct (I used to hate it, but now probably my favorite map)
Guardian (for 2v2s at least)

Good:
The Pit (Sword respawns a bit too fast, but other than that, great map)
Narrows (The experience is sort of repetitive, but nevertheless, I enjoy it)
High Ground (Nothing really to say, it's a good map)

Decent:
Valhalla (I haven't really played much here, and I know I'm in the overwhelming majority, but yeah, I'm just not feeling this map. It's still pretty good, but yeah)
Snowbound (It's a good map, but campers ruin it for me)

BAD:
Epitaph (I'd imagine it gets much better with other gametypes, but in FFA, which is the only thing I have played it with, this map is a camp/whore-fest. I'd really like to see CTF and Assault variants on this map. Make it happen, Bungie!)

But yeah, on a different note, last night I was playing a couple of MM Team Slayer games with some friends. I was a 39, one of my friends was a 31, one was a 22, and the other was a 15. After playing eleven games, and only losing one (which was a 50-49, I might add) three of us gained a whopping one level, and the other gained two. Does this always happen when playing with mixed parties, or is it something we did?

I DEMAND ANSWERS, LUKE.

Go Read the Bungie Weekly Update, It tells you what you need to be doing to level up.

In other words start whoring the BR, and get head shots like a mofo.

In related news, I am kicking ass with the BR once again! :D

It IS harder to level up in mixed parties though, I think they said it was to avoid allowing people to power-level lower people? Any time we play mixed party I never ever go up OR down any ranks, and the person who is low ranked will go up one or two. When I play in a party where we are all within one or two levels of each other you see an immediate spike up in going up and down levels. Famously in one mixed party in Team Slayer (38/36/33/22, me being the 36) we lost 8 matches in a row (I know), and only the 22 went down one level. It's fucking bizarre. I've given up trying to understand or make sense of it. It's why I've stopped playing Lone Wolves, I have 3 AWESOME games in a row, hitting 42 on the first win, then after two more awesome matches I lose one and go down to 41. It's nonsensical.

Welcome back, Armubaba.

We need to play a bit later.

As for the maps, I don't know what's wrong with me, but I've enjoyed myself all the times I've played on Epitaph. It's not a great map, and it has a serious lack of interesting control points, but I've not hated playing on it.

Iguess I just have weird tastes in maps. Almost everyone hates Snowbound, and I love it, most people don't love Narrows and I adore it... it was the same way with H2.

I guess I'm just a bad person.

i think i'd be going down a bunch of levels if i didn't get at least 5-10 headshots a game. losing streaks still suck though.

btw, does anyone else feel like the sword lunge is a bit...generous?

Custom games get hampered a lot by the lack of clan support. Most of the people on my friendlist are playing MM and I'm not one who sets up custom games. When I get a game invite and I'm in MM I'm hesitant to leave because of the EXP reduction and it's generally considered bad form to leave a game.
I always scavenge my friendlist and recent playerlist for people I can join.

I do have a fair amount of gaffers on my FL, but the most active ones are usually the ones that hop to the next big thing rather quickly.

Gowans was always a good one to have a custom game going so I always joined him, but now he's moved to Orange box :(

Yep. Mostly everyone plays matchmaking. oh well.

Speaking of matchmaking...there's not enough Guardian, and there's no epitaph in the Team Slayer playlist. What's the deal?

I'd love to get a bunch of Gaffers together tonight and play some matchmaking, maybe some Infection and Rocket Race.

I think Sandtrap is my most favorite map. Although I think Bungie should move the flag spawn onto the base areas where teams spawn instead of the moving Elephants.

Still, though, it is very fun and the best big team experience I've had in gaming.

Tieno,

Why do people need Clan Support to have a fun, competitive custom game? Or in Matchmaking, for that matter...

It would be nice to have a sorting ability somewhere to easily track people from GAF (or your clan) instead of having to individually manage your friends list and individually add people. Like the bungie clan on bungie.net should automatically be your friends list for Halo 3 or something equivalent to speed up the process. That's my thought at least.

You don't need it to have fun in the custom game itself but clan support would help for setting up custom games, as it could basically function as a second friendlist that you subcribe to with the click of a button and you instantly get a big list of active (GAF) Halo players. Depending on the tools they give you, it'd be easier to gather people on set dates and keep the list clean.
Bungie's public reason for not including it ('second friendlist, lol') is shortsighted and flawed, if it's the real one. If MS doesn't include this much needed feature that would actually benefit games in the next dash update, they're dropping the ball.

That and/or Bungie lets us run a custom (GAF) server.

I swear I have seen a graph of how my level compares to other Halo 3 players, but I can't find it anywhere. Does anyone remember seeing such?

I think... it's shown when you hit X in the lobby to determine your search preferences (best connection, language, etc.).

I've been pondering this for a while. I've got lots of friends from different places, and it'd be nice to be able to sort them, like how MSN messenger and AIM allow folders.

So, when exactly is SWAT going to be incorporated into Halo 3's matchmaking? It was my favorite part of Halo 2's multiplayer by far.

Striker

Wouldn't mind SWAT being unranked and 6-8 players in Matchmaking.

Battle Rifle start with Magnum secondary.

Also, when the playlists are updated, hopefully Team Tactical is removed and they place Big Team Battle (with more weight toward objectives) ranked.

Isn't the rumor that clan support was left out of Halo 3 because its going to be a new dashboard option in the Fall XBL update so your clan is continuous throughout every game?

I really hope BTB is introduced into Ranked, would be nice for the Haloween update.

Also my best KD Ratio in one single game was +41 god bless btb.

Publicly Bungie says their decision to cut it was due to it being just a second friendlist. Frankie has skillfully pointed towards the rumors on clan support to silence the crying, without actually/trying not to confirm the validity of the rumor. Seeing how Bungie's reasoning is pretty flawed and they're usually all about the community features one would think and hope that the clan support is real.
But Frankie admitted that they don't know anything about the clan support only what the rumors say, so that makes me think they cut it for the reason they stated...which is weird and un-Bungie.
But Frankie is Frankie, so yeah, whatever...

I think the un-removable turret on the elephant (front - passenger side) should have been a guass gun. Would make the elephant much better to setup as a defensive weapon.

Everytime I play BTB on Sandtrap, I get an awesome K/D. I really need BTB to be Ranked.

You get an awesome K/D ratio due to it being mostly splitscreen mcgees or flat out bad people in BTB, if they rank it, this is counter productive to what you are trying to do, heh.

I can only recall of one night where I did that! I was waiting on some WoW buddies to finish up on some quests and go do an instance, didn't want to have to bail out mid fight. I also had my headset on for Ventrilo. :p

As Weird as it is.. the old H2 group is not as active as i thought it would be.

-Cerrius plays alone.
-Dopey plays once in a while and still does the "crying on the inside" and leaves.
-IronClad is no where to be found.
-HG is too busy grinding in FFXI

-TJ's never invite me :p

So how many headshots you guys typically getting in a game.

I have been very good with the BR this past week, and now noticed i usually have more headshots then all the rest of the people combined in the game.

I've noticed the same. On BR heavy maps (Narrows, Construct, Isolation) I usually get somewhere around 3-7 headshots, which quite often is the best in the game.

BR is awesome. So satisfying to drop people with headshots. Carbine, not loving it yet (even though I've understood it should be comparable with BR).

Nah, I've always been good at all BTB types. It would decrese, but not to a point where it would be hurting by stats.
... I hope.

What's your GT, BTW? I'd like to send you a FR. I have barely played with GAFfers recently, and it makes me sad.

Well, I played TS (Ranked) on Narrows recently, and got 4 or 5 Double Kills, and one Triple Kill, and ended up with 21. Narrows is my map.

Off topic, but are you getting COD4? I'd like to find a good group to play with regularly.

(And I decided I'm going to try not playing WoW for a while. I spend far, far too much time playing it.)

That's cool, and yea I'm getting COD4. Be more than happy to run with ya, that game really sucked without a team. :lol

I posted this in the official thread earlier but figured I'd post it here too since this IS the multiplayer discussion. My lengthy thoughts on the melee situation.

That's my thoughts. In Halo: CE and Halo 2, melee was never an issue of controversy. At all. Now this system has been implemented and people obviously aren't happy with it. My example...It's Team Slayer, and four melee battles are about to go down at various places across the map...In Halo 3, all four melee battles are effected by what I have deemed a "turn-based" math driven melee system. All four melee battles are effected. In another game...Such as Halo 2 or even Halo 3 with a slight host melee advantage, one of those four battles is effected, the one with the host. The other six players in the game aren't being effected.

On top of that it's not as if the host is going to figure out that he's host every game and change the way he plays that game to take advantage of this melee host advantage. Will there be a slight melee advantage that might cause the occassional headache? Possibly. But right now the melee system is causing a headache every single time someone melees...

Every time a melee swings, a Spartan loses his wings.

People are annoyed by it, but Halo 2's melee system was worse. At least because of the lunge factor. Go back and play Halo 2 again. One game. You'll notice a clear change.
