Halo Director Announced

Are you busy in the summer of 2008? Because someone, somewhere, is getting in line right now to buy a ticket to the motion picture adaptation of Halo®. This exciting project, which will be produced by geek gods and Academy Award® winners Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh under their WingNut Films banner for Universal Pictures and Twentieth Century Fox, has finally announced a director.

The Halo motion picture will be helmed by Neill Blomkamp, making his feature film debut. Blomkamp is widely regarded as one of the most innovative and original artists currently working in short films and commercial advertising. Halo will be distributed domestically by Universal and internationally by Fox. Visual effects, miniatures, and creature design and creation will all be handled by Jackson's award-winning Weta Digital Ltd. and Weta Workshop, Ltd., most recently known for their Oscar-worthy work on The Lord of the Rings films.

A native of South Africa, Blomkamp directed the acclaimed 2005 short film, Alive in Joburg, that depicted a future in which extraterrestrials have become refugees. Last year, Blomkamp also received three Clio Awards and a Visual Effects Society Award for his television commercial Citroen-Alive with Technology. In 2004, Blomkamp was recognized as "One of the Top Five Directors to Watch" at the First Boards Awards and was a featured artist at the Saatchi & Saatchi New Directors Showcase at Cannes. He has also been nominated for an Emmy award for his work on an episode of James Cameron's Dark Angel.

Well, at least he is, uh, an experienced animator

PJ must be trying to break someone into the business, wonder how much he will be involved.

Is peter jackson working on anything currently?

This is a smart move. A small-name, talented director will mean that he'll potentially be more faithful to the source material than a bigger-name director who'll impose his own vision on the project (undoubtedly a shitty vision considering every other video game movie aside from Mortal Kombat 1).

Peter Jackson has nothing to do with the Halo movie outside of getting WETA on board.. any exec can get an executive producer credit.

This could be a very good thing or a very bad thing. I'll wait until more information, maybe some shots, are released to make a definite decision. As of right now, however, I'm leaning towards good plan.

i was gonna troll but he made the Citroen transformers advert?

Still this is a -1 for the chance of this movie turning out ok i rekon.

speaking of weta, they just scored the special effects for james camerons new movie I think, can't remember where I read that or even what the movie is called.

Wow, aren't you just talking out your ass. Right now is Jackson confirmed as the Executive Producer or as this information suggests the Producer? If he is indeed the producer than he has everything to do with it.

Unexpected, but for some reason I'm more excited for this than anyone else I can think of. Partly because I don't know what to expect from him.

Pretty much the same with me. The guy can handle his robotic-looking entities, that's for sure, which bodes well for sci-fi universe of Halo. Is MC going to be CGI in this movie? Given this guys background, and WETA involved, it wouldn't surprise me.

The press release may have inadvertently left out the word "executive" in the excerpt quoted above, making a common mistake in the process--this is the first time I've heard him named as producer, and IMDb still has him (and Fran Walsh) listed as executive producers. Moreover, the press release in the first post says further down:

Mary Parent, Scott Stuber and Peter Schlessel will produce Halo.

Not "Mary Parent, Scott Stuber and Peter Schlessel will also produce Halo." (And isn't there some Academy rule about the number of credited producers on a film being limited to three?)

Gollum/Kong style Mocap surely.

Andy serkis for MC :lol

Holy crap, the short films look great. Funny thing is that they involve aliens and robots with guns. :lol

This is without a doubt my most anticipated movie project for the next few years. Hopefully it turns out well.

After watching those two shorts....I believe.

I have no problem with Blomkamp taking over this project (or any other for that matter).

This is very good news. Blomkamp is really talented and as Chairman Yang points out, he won't likely try to use his own vision of the Halo universe, unlike most bigger directors would try to (can you imagine Burton's Cortana - teehee)

*screams*

It seems like Bungie and Weta are already in alighnment on the design aspect for the film - Weta is already doing early weapon props from Bungie's designs, according to the weekly Bungie update. I hope Bungie is still able to have some creative input now that the director is taking the helm.

He certainly knows how to handle CG characters in a live-action environment.

I don't expect a oscar worthy masterpiece here, it's just a direct adaption of the first game after all, 12 hours of story crammed into 90 minutes of film.

The big question mark is the music and voice actor department.

Halo won't be the same without Marty O'Donnell's score or the original voices of the MC, Cortana and Guilty Spark.

Well I'm sort of glad it's not Guillermo Del Toro

DONT YOU DARE GIVE Guillermo Del "****INGMASTER" Toro HATE!

He is god!

But I do agree this director looks like he knows what he is doing behind the camera so I am all for it.

Halo videogame sucks ass but maybe the film will be awesome with talents like this behind it

Remember guys, City of God director used to direct commercials right before starting up that movie. Sometimes they are good surprises! I think there are many cases like these.

Silent Hill had talent behind it. Some of the best in the industry, in fact.

And we all know how much people loved Silent Hill.

Silent hill had SOME talent behind it!
grappy director and some half talented producers thats not talant, its a little talent mixed with a bag of crap.

Huh. I had little interest in Halo before, but with Neill Blomkamp behind the helm, I'm extremely intrigued. I've enjoyed his shorts and commercials in the past. He's got a great handle on all types of effects and he seems to be a gifted director.

Very cool.

Uhh, sorry?

Carol Spier, in many circles, is considered to be one of the best production designers working in cinema. Her work in "Crash" is total genius. She may not work on the biggest blockbusters, but she puts such a delicate amount of intricacy into her projects that you can't help but notice.

Patrick Tatopoulos is also considered to be one of the best makeup and creature effects supervisors in Hollywood. Just look at what he did for the creature work in Silent Hill, and you can tell this guy knows his shit.

The cinematographer, sound design crew, costumes... these were all people that had lots of experience and credibility in the industry. I'd say that's a fair amount of talent...

Haha. Come on, I like games as much as the next guy, but to call them (or at least 95% of them) well written or "art" is ludicrous.

Silent Hill didn't have WETA Digital and WETA Workshops behind it, and it didn't have a 100 million dollar budget.

If Silent Hill proved one thing, and Neill Blomkamp should realize this aswell, if you stick too close to the original source your movie will be crappy. Peter Jackson didn't stick too close to the source material, as nice as this Bombadil crap looks on paper, it would have turned a long movie into a boring movie. As much as Christopher Lee has complained, nobody cared for Saruman slaving the Shire, it just isn't fun to look at on the big screen.

Fine, Halo fanboys will be happy if MC says as little as possible and keeps his helmet on all the time, but will this help the movie?

That's only if the source material doesn't lend itself well to the movie format. While Silent Hill works great as a game, it's not exactly the picture perfect backbone for a good film. On the other hand I do believe Halo's story and the way it's presented throughout the game is a good backbone for a film, much in the same way that the Lord of the Rings books were. With a few tweaks and liberties taken, I could see this becomming a pretty damn good film.

They need Master Chief and Cortana's VAs though dammit.

Am I the only one who isn't interested in seeing a Halo film? I'm a fan of the games and all, but the story is nothing to write home about. Master chief is about as one dimensional and boring as you can get. Likewise the covenant are composed of a bunch of Jim Henson rejects, and knock offs of those evil aliens from Titan AE. Of course, nothing is impossible, but I'd say the chances of this NOT being a complete piece of garbage are just as low as other video game movies, if not lower.

ok crash is overated IMO!

Patrick Tatopoulos talented yes but not the best in the buissnes hhahahaah and so what if he is taleted, he creates the makeup and some special effects on the film...that does not make the story any better, nor doesnt it change the others work on the film!

I'm interested in the film because it's an epic sci-fi action movie, and there simply aren't enough of those made.
