Halo |OT15| Beta-tested, GAF approved

Sprint as default and no sprint gametypes in one game would be weird and it'll be annoying to switch back and forth. They just need to increase the player speed and omit Sprint.

I'm living in a pipe dream btw, sprint is here to stay

Sprint is a good addition to Halo. Sprint is an awful addition to competitive Halo.

See this I have a problem with. Competitive halo IS halo. There were a few great posts in the last OT, about how what was quintessentially Halo for the better part of a decade is now relegated to niche status.

Sprint, Armor Abilities, perks, loadouts, weapon unlocks, personal ordnance, Global Ordnance, these didn't exist in Halo 1-3, widely considered the definitive Halo games.

People like Ninja, Bravo, Sudd twins, or whoever plays competitively are not the ones who say sprint doesn't work, but ordinary fans of the series for the better part of a decade.

All this competitive, pro, hardcore, and other loaded terms just change the discussion. Sprint has negatively impacted the core Halo gameplay experience. Full stop.

I don't want to play competitive all the time, sometimes I like to screw around in social games, custom games, I don't like sprint in those either.

Any defense of sprint as a valuable addition to Halo, can therefore be attributed to any other changes as well, for some people camo is a great addition to Halo, but not competitive halo.

I really, REALLY hate retailer exclusive shit. It's a horrible practice that can die a painful death any minute now.
100% with you on that one. You should poke around for a Locus code if you want one though. They weren't hard to come by when that app was running. There must be a few unclaimed ones floating around out there.

Unlearning the sprint button is rough. Going back and forth between the two gametypes takes a lot of learning/unlearning.
Yeah - the contrast isn't good. Might be tolerable within a playlist or two though. Comparable to the ZB/Vanilla split in Reach perhaps. Regardless, it feels a lot more 'Halo-ey' imo, so I can see why people want sprint removed. It has a drastic impact on the character of the game.

True that the console is doing terribly? Definetely.
True that Domino's attitude was.. entertaining in a way he didn't intend? Others on podcast said the same as Domino without such an effect.

That and he never explained why he thought it was "pointless". lol he got so mad.

If they ever shoot a porn parody of Halsey in her college years (which is what cortana's appearance stems from - in other words, Halsey used to be Dylan Rider) doing a few black guys they should call it "So much black ink."

It'd go well with Poor Little Glassman and bring us one step closer to a box set.

Uh... Is this what you think of when you're not spending hours thinking of detailed weaponry and multiplayer 'sandboxes' ?

What the actual fuck

Completely random question, but can anyone here with a mic do a decent impression of Bullhorn from Black Dynamite?

This.... this isn't helping me understand.

Yeah... No. Watch Dustin Browder's presentation on designing SC2 around being an eSport. That's designing it for competitive multiplayer. Now look at everything that is in custom games, the campaign, and the editor. You're going to notice that there's a lot of stuff that isn't fit for competitive SC2 like the Diamondback or the Wraith. Competitive Starcraft is Starcraft. Look at the populations, most people ladder in that game. Yet those units and more, plus quite a few scrapped abilities are in the game. Can you tell me why that is?

Also to the bold text, just because you don't like it doesn't mean that other people instantly hate it as well. There are aspects of sprint that work with Halo very well and there are aspects that aren't as great. That uncertainty of whether it will be good or bad is just the concept of why it doesn't work for competitive Halo.

Now I'll never get to hear the first episode of Mancannon Radio

Also make sure you're certain, don't get anyone that's not involved banned.

One thing Madness didn't mention - which I think is key here - is how Sprint forgives bad player position / map movement. So much of the latter is down to good decision-making, map awareness, team co-ordination etc. and Sprint effectively offers you an option to 'undo' bad decisions in this regard, so to speak.

All one has to do to really grasp how this detrimentally impacts gameplay is to imagine watching a game of 4v4 Slayer on a Halo 3 map like Citadel, from an overhead perspective.

What you've essentially got is a fairly simplistic, dynamic algorithm of each player either moving in certain directions or staying still. A simple ebb and flow. Something that is actually fairly easy to unconsciously learn and then use to your advantage, allowing for greater levels of predictability, only excepted / contravened on an individual skill level.

(i.e. Individual decision-making, based on out-thinking the opponent by using the model of systematic predictability, projecting what they think you'll do but doing something different.)

Once you factor the Sprint mechanic into such a game, it immediately brings in a huge host of variables which are almost incalculable (or certainly so during a game, just using your brain!), thus reducing systematic predictability.

Is not as bad as it was in Reach, in Halo 4 I Prefer to not sprint when Im escaping while getting shot at (it actually works better IMO) Halo Reach was just Frustrating having to shoot someone who is sprinting away with that bloomed DMR, it was for me one of the most frustrating video game experiences.

Sprint Shouldn't be in Halo, but at least the sprint in Halo 4 is one of those things that 343 did well.

Seriously, just reduce its range by reducing its aim assist over distance. Thing stays in aim assist/red reticle mode for like the entire map. A scope reduction would do wonders as well.

I don't like the idea of reducing aim assist over range, I never have. Halo CE didn't do it, but because the aim assist and magnetism mechanics weren't stupidly easy, and you had to lead your shots, it still took skill to land shots consistently. The aim assist and magnetism in Halo games post Halo CE (outside of Halo 3, which was just sloppy) needed to be toned down and reworked. It's just too damn easy to aim in Halo 4, the aiming mechanics need to be changed overall, not just at different ranges.

I think it is too jarring for their to be an aim assist drop off at a certain range, or needing to scope in to get back your aim assist. In Halo CE, zooming in with the Pistol was for the most part, unnecessary, and actually worse than just being unzoomed and shooting. You could cross map people consistently because the aim assist didn't change its values at medium to long ranges, only at extremely long ranges, where there was none. But, you still had to lead your shots intelligently and aim properly with CE's smooth and consistent, yet skill based aim assist and magnetism. Shadowrun does the same thing with its aiming mechanics, because it is based off the Halo CE engine, and it works beautifully, just like it does in Halo CE.

Oh my.....just...wtf with you

I had 19 DLC codes from pre-ordering a normal version of the game.
NINETEEN
There are 67 disc-locked content items in Halo 4 (7 armor sets with 6 pieces each, 9 emblems with 9 complimentary backgrounds, 4 helmets, and 3 weapons) that must be unlocked with a combination of 14 retailer-exclusive marketplace codes, 2 SKU-specific marketplace codes, and the War Games Map Pass.

What the fuck, Microsoft? Was Gears of War 3 this bad?

The sad part is that I have all of them unlocked, but I still think it was a bunch of shit for them to do this to Halo. They had more disc-locked content items in Halo 4 than all of the previous Halo games combined, multiplied by 11 (there were six—the flaming Warthog and Honor Guard Wraith in Halo Wars, Sergeant Johnson in ODST, and the Recon Helmet variant, Elite Officer Armor, and Legendary Armor Effect in Reach).
